Through the Internet, I mentioned that I planned to visit Corpus Christi, but then Houston Square Dancers recommended that I should better come to Houston and its 52 clubs. Well, I  changed flight, car and hotel. Prior to travelling I received information, Dance schedules and contact telephone numbers from a caller and several dancers.

But for the USA where a lot of clubs only accept couples and where Plus is  a regular level I have two problems: 

1. Unfortunately I'm single; 

2. I cannot dance Plus. 

Our Clubcaller warned me that American callers would put Plus calls into Mainstream tips, too. Dancers and Callers told me that I just should introduce myself to the Caller and tell them my problem, - then good callers will announce the Mainstream tips or call Plus calls direct.

Then it was time to travel. The first dance night, 15 squares. I received a warm welcome; there were even some Single ladies. The Caller made one Mainstream tip, then Plus. After the dance, he told me: "I'm sorry, but my dancers can't dance Mainstream!"

Next night another club, 2 to 3 squares. Also one, two single ladies available. However, a Dancer told me that it is a Couples Club and I would do better to visit a Singles Club the next night. The Caller confirmed that he would announce the Mainstream tips; - at first it worked well. After the first tip he said through the microphone: "Heinz, you're so afraid about Plus, - what you've danced wasn't Mainstream, it was Plus, - I've just called it direct, - and you did it!"

In a later tip he taught me 3 Diamond calls and Peel off, - it worked. Nevertheless, close to the end, a dancer asked him if the next tip would be Mainstream, the caller agreed and so the dancer offered me his place in the square, went out for a cup of coffee. Then the tip started, - and it was Plus and I stood helpless in the forest. I was lucky that I could get the dancer back into the square and escaped.

At the New Years Eve Dance (up to 14 squares) at first it worked well, there were many Mainstream tips, but while I was always was waiting for an announcement that the next tip would be Mainstream I often I stayed out, - and the tip was Mainstream, other tips which were announced as Mainstream contained a lot of Plus calls, - so I often stood un-"coordinated" in the forest, the boat sunk instead of being loaded, the train on "Track 2" derailed, even "Spin chain and exchange the gears" was no help, - the square broke down if I was in it. Sad and depressed I spent the remaining tips outside.

On 1st Jan there was only a Plus club dancing, - and they could not help me as a "Mainstream only dancer", so I spent the evening in my hotel.

On 3rd Jan, I was warned before: the caller would call so quick and complicated, that often squares would break down. I talked to the caller and he told me that the agreement for this night says that he has to call Mainstream and Plus and it worked: Plus was Plus and Mainstream was Mainstream. I had no problems with the speed or the calls, enough single ladies, 9 to 10 squares and a nice Afterparty. A wonderful night.

Next evening after 1 1/2 hours "Open House" there were a few member tips, - one Plus, three Mainstream tips, - at the Mainstream tip he called "Track 1", "Track 2", "Track 3", "Track 4" direct, - no problems for me, a good evening.

Looking back, I would like to say: I always got a warm welcome and as a single traveller, I had no problems finding a female partner. Dancers and callers accepted that I was only able to dance Mainstream. However, I am a shy person and so I did not feel happy as the only Mainstream dancer on the dance floor, who got some special handling.

Über das Internet meldete ich mich in Corpus Christi, doch dann schrieben mir Tänzer aus Houston und schrieben, ich solle doch zu ihnen kommen, in Houston gäbe es 52 Clubs, in Corpus Christi nur zwei. Gut, ich buchte Flug, Auto und Hotel um. In den Wochen vor der Reise bekam ich von einem Caller und mehreren Tänzern Infos, Tanztermine und Kontakt -Telefonnummern.

Doch für die USA, wo viele Clubs nur Paare aufnehmen und Plus Standard-Level ist, habe ich zwei Probleme:

1. Ich bin (leider)  Single; 

2. Ich kann (noch) kein Plus tanzen. 

Unser Clubcaller warnte mich davor, dass in den USA oft auch Plus-Figuren im Mainstream auftauchten, - Tänzer und Caller im Internet rieten mir: "Keine Angst, melde dich beim Caller; gute Caller sagen dann Mainstream-Tips an, oder callen Plus-Figuren direkt!"

Dann war es soweit: Der erste Tanzabend, 15 Squares. Ich wurde freundlich aufgenommen, auch waren Single-Damen da. Der Caller machte einen Mainstream-Tip, danach Plus. Er entschuldigte sich nachher bei mir, dass seine Tänzer leider kein Mainstream tanzen könnten.

Am Abend darauf ein anderer Club, zwei bis drei Squares. Auch hier gab es ein, zwei Single-Damen. Allerdings wies mich ein Tänzer darauf hin, dass das ein Paar-Club sei, und ich besser beim Single-Club am nächsten Abend aufgehoben sein würde. Der Caller versprach, Mainstream-Tips anzusagen. Das klappte anfangs auch. Nach dem ersten Tip sagte er über das Mikrophon: "Heinz, das, was Du da getanzt hast, war kein Mainstream, es war Plus, ich hab's nur direkt gecallt - und du hast es gut gemacht!". 

In einem späteren Tip erklärte er mir drei Diamond-Calls, dazu Peel off, und es ging. Doch gegen Ende, ein Tänzer hatte den Caller extra gefragt, ob das dann Mainstream gäbe, sagte dieser zu. Da stellte mir der Tänzer seinen Platz im Square und damit seine Frau zur Verfügung und ging Kaffee trinken. Kaum war der Tip angelaufen, da ging's los mit Plus und ich stand hilflos im Wald. Zum Glück gab es eine Announcement-Pause, ich konnte den freundlichen Tänzer herwinken, und floh aus dem Square.

Beim Sylvester-Tanz (bis zu 14 Squares) fing es gut an, es gab viele Mainstream-Tips, doch da ich immer bis zuletzt auf ein Mainstream-Signal von einem der Caller wartete und dann keine Dame mehr frei war, stand ich oft draußen, obwohl es Mainstream war. Andere Tips fingen Mainstream an und die Caller callten die Plusfiguren direkt. Doch in für mich zu vielen stand ich un-"coordinated" im Wald, sank das "Boat", statt "beladen" zu werden, entgleiste der Zug auf "Track 2": Da half auch kein "Spin Chain and Exchange the Gears", der Square brach, wenn ich drin war. Traurig, ja depressiv hockte ich die letzten Tips nur noch herum.

Am 1. Januar tanzte nur ein Plus-Club und der wollte mit mir "Nur-Mainstreamer" nichts zu tun haben - da blieb ich im Hotel.

3. Januar: Man hatte mich vor dem Caller gewarnt, da seine Calls so schnell und kompliziert seien, daß oft Squares brächen. Ich sprach mit dem Caller, er sagte mir vertrauenserweckend: "Mein Vertrag für heute sagt mir, ich solle Mainstream und Plus callen, - und dann mache ich das auch so!" Und so geschah es: Plus war Plus, Mainstream war - von einem versehentlichen "Single-Circle" abgesehen - Mainstream. Ich kam mit Tempo und Figuren problemlos klar, genug Single-Damen, neun bis zehn Squares. Ein wunderbarer Abend, sogar eine nette Afterparty gab es.

Am darauffolgenden Abend war nach eineinhalb Stunden Open House Member-Tanz mit drei bis vier Squares. Der Caller machte einen Plus- und drei angekündigte Mainstream-Tips. Bei Mainstream callte er "Track 1", "Track 2", "Track 3" und "Track 4" direkt - keine Probleme - für mich ein guter Abend.

Zurückblickend muss ich sagen: Ich wurde überall gut und freundlich aufgenommen und hatte als einzelreisender Single kaum ein Problem, eine Tanzpartnerin zu finden. Dass ich nur Mainstream konnte, wurde von den Tänzern und Callern  hingenommen. Da ich jedoch schüchtern bin, war mir nicht ganz wohl dabei, dass ich außerhalb der Student-Tänze der einzige Square-Dancer war, der kein Plus konnte, und dem deswegen oft freundlich eine Extrawurst gebraten wurde.
