Hello from California! Betsy and I are in California, near San Francisco where we have been since October. We leave here in June to fly to the U.S. Nationals, then, in July, we will drive to Vancouver to the Canadian Nationals (July 19-22) and spend the summer dancing and touring in Canada. After returning from Canada, we will probably spend the winter in Arizona or Texas. Arizona, Texas and Florida are where there is good square dancing is all winter long. We call people who migrate North to South "snow-birds." Finally, we will return to Anaheim in June 2001 for the 50^th National Square Dance Convention.

Betsy and I have volunteered to help on "Publicity" and "Education" committees for the 50^th Nationals. The very first U. S. Square Dance National Convention was held in Anaheim, (near Disneyland) as well as the 25^th, so the 50^th is returning to the starting point. I know that the publicity committee plans to post some advertising in the Bulletin, but this is an early invitation to put it in your long-term plans. We have volunteered to be on the Publicity and Education committees because we have danced a number of times in Germany and have received such wonderful caring and hospitality that we want to offer our welcome to our European friends. The 50^th National SD Convention will be on June 27, 28, 29 and 30 of 2001.

We will host a seminar about traveling overseas and square dancing, as we have had more than a little experience doing just that. In fact, we have been so warmly and enthusiastically received that we want to encourage more Americans to take advantage of the warmth and friendship of European square dancers. Everywhere we have danced in Europe we have been met with open arms and warm hearts. ... We felt welcomed as we have hardly ever felt welcomed anywhere else. We wish we could dance with every square dance club in Europe!

We subscribe to the Bulletin and feel that we have a visit with each of our European friends every time we receive this wonderful publication. It is, in fact, the most informative and useful publication of several we receive, with more editorial material, letters, suggestions, hints, and discussion than any other Square Dance publication we know of. All this as well as the Advertisements for future dances and specials and calendar of events, announcements from the executive board, statistics about square dancing in Europe and lots of other stuff! Wow, takes me a week to read it all!

I am taking the liberty of attaching a recent column for your use in any way you like, as you may use this letter in any way you like. . . 

Gruß aus Kalifornien! Betsy und ich sind in Kalifornien, nahe San Franzisko, wo wir uns seid Oktober aufhalten. Wir fliegen von hier aus im Juni zu den U.S. National Conventions, danach, im Juli, werden wir nach Vancover zur kanadischen National Convention fahren (19.-22. Juli) und den Sommer mit Tanzen und Reisen in Kanada verbringen. Nach unserer Rückkehr aus Kanada werden wir vielleicht den Winter in Arizona oder Texas verbringen. Arizona, Texas und Florida sind die Gegenden, wo es den ganzen Winter über guten Square Dance gibt. Wir nennen die Leute, die von Norden nach Süden ziehen "Snowbirds" (sinngem. "Zugvögel"). Schließlich werden wir im Juni zur 50. National Square Dance Convention nach Anaheim zurückkehren.

Betsy und ich helfen bei der Konvention in den Komitees "Öffentlichkeitsarbeit" und "Weiterbildung". Die aller erste U.S. National Convention fand in Anaheim statt, ebenso die 25. und nun kehrt die 50. an den Startpunkt zurück. Ich weiß, das das Komitee "Öffentlichkeitsarbeit" einige Anzeigen für das Bulletin plant, aber dies hier soll bereits eine frühe Einladung sein, die ihr in Eure Langfrist-Planung einbeziehen könnt. Wir haben uns als Helfer zu diesen Komitees gemeldet, weil wir mehrmals in Deutschland getanzt haben und eine so wunderbare Behandlung und Gastfreundschaft erfahren haben, dass wir nun unseren europäischen Freunden unser Willkommen anbieten wollen. Die 50. National Convention findet vom 27. bis 30. Juni 2001 statt.

Wir werden ein Seminar über Reisen und Tanzen in Übersee anbieten, da wir darin etwas mehr als nur ein bisschen Erfahrung haben. Wir sind tatsächlich so freundlich und begeistert aufgenommen worden, dass wir mehr Amerikaner ermutigen wollen, die Wärme und Freundschaft europäischer Square Dancer in Anspruch zu nehmen. Wo immer wir in Europa tanzten, sind wir auf offene Arme und freundliche Herzen getroffen. ... Wir fühlten uns willkommen wie sonst kaum irgendwo anders. Wir wünschen, wir könnten mit allen Square Dance Clubs Europas tanzen!

Wir haben das Bulletin abonniert und jedes Mal, wenn wir diese wundervolle Zeitschrift bekommen, fühlen wir uns wie zu Besuch bei allen unseren europäischen Freunden. Es ist tatsächlich die informativste und nützlichste Publikation von den vielen, die wir bekommen. Es hat mehr Artikel, Briefe, Vorschläge, Tipps und Diskussionen als irgendeine andere Square Dance Zeitschrift, die wir kennen. All das, sowie die Anzeigen für künftige Tänze und Specials, den Veranstaltungskalender, Bekanntmachungen des EAASDC-Boards, Statistiken über den Square Dance in Europa und vieles anderes! Puh, ich brauche eine ganze Woche, um alles zu lesen!

This month, I want to tell you about the delights of dancing with various square dance groups in different places. Yes, this is a subject we have considered before, but it bears a return visit. 

Someone recently remarked that they were going to England. When I asked if they had made plans for dancing there, they said they hadn't even thought about it. Well, by the time I got through, they were thinking about it! We gave them copies of the British Square Dance Magazine, the National Directory, names and addresses and Telephone numbers of various callers and dancers.

Betsy and I have enjoyed dancing all over the U.S. and in many countries. We have met so many dancers over the years we have been dancing. We have been the beneficiary of the motto of square dancing, "Square Dancing IS Friendship Set To Music." Everywhere we go we are met with open arms and welcoming hearts. Of course, that does not happen by accident. We do exert ourselves and seek out dancers and invite ourselves to come dance.

Here are some pointers for dancing "away from home."

• Commit to dancing "on the road." When we took our first trip to England we searched through the "National Directory" and wrote ahead. Everyone we wrote to answered! One of those who answered was Ted Ivin, square dance caller from London. He invited us to come dance with his club, the Gryphen Squares. We danced with a couple of other clubs while we were there including dancing with the incomparable British caller Paul Bristow. That was the night that a British cuer gathered us up at our hotel with her car. When we stopped for "petrol" I inquired whether the British bought fuel by the liter or by the gallon. We were stopped when she answered "by the pound." Of course she meant by the Pound Sterling, the British unit of currency! We have been distressed lately when the price of gasoline has risen to nearly $2.00/gallon. In the UK, fuel has been hovering near $5.00 per U.S. gallon for years!
• Write, write, write. Send e-mail but old fashioned pen and paper seems to get the best results. Ask for help understanding where clubs are located. We found that the organizational system in England is a particular challenge, while the German postal code system is easily understood. Don't be afraid of writing in English to clubs from other countries. There seems to always be someone who can read and write English. It is a mandatory subject for European school children. We found Germans to be especially hospitable. When we were in Bitburg for about a month, we were too far from square dance clubs to drive to a strange city and get home on the same night. Dancers in Bonn, Cologne, Trier, Baumholder, Aachen, and several other cities invited us not only to dance with them, but put us up overnight as guests in their homes. We often telephoned someone in the club we wished to visit. This often involved calling several times until we contacted someone who spoke English. In each and every case, we were invited to come dance, and to stay overnight.
• Say what you want. It is rewarding to dance at a "big" dance on a Saturday night or a weekend, but the joy of dancing with a club is better. Here you are dancing in the "home" of the dancers and are truly a guest. When we wanted to dance in Vienna we knew we would have to stay someplace. When Robert and Püppi Slezak-Mach invited us to stay the week "in their apartment," we first tried to decline, fearing it would be too crowded. They wrote back telling us that the apartment was vacant, they didn't live there. We accepted and found them to be warm and wonderful. Like Ted Ivin, they have been to see us several times dancing in San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, and elsewhere.
• Most of all: Dance, dance, dance. Dance at home. Welcome guests. Invite yourself to dance wherever you go. Remember, when you go dance with another club, YOU are the gift. Ask for the microphone, compliment the caller and the dancers, thank the club for hosting you. Don't worry how well you dance, you will be loved and cherished.

Diesen Monat möchte ich Euch etwas über das Vergnügen des Tanzens mit verschiedenen Square Dance Gruppen an verschiedenen Orten erzählen. Jaja, über dieses Thema haben wir uns schon ausgelassen, aber es verdient eine nochmalige Betrachtung. 

Jemand erwähnte neulich, dass er mit seiner Frau nach England führe. Als ich fragte, ob sie schon Pläne für das Tanzen dort gemacht hätten, sagten sie, sie hätten noch nicht einmal darüber nachgedacht. Nun, nach einiger Zeit hatte ich es geschafft, sie dachten darüber nach! Wir gaben ihnen Hefte des britischen Square Dance Magazins, das "National Directory", sowie Namen und Telefonnummern verschiedener Caller und Tänzer.

Betsy und ich hatten Spaß daran, überall in den USA und in vielen anderen Ländern zu tanzen. Über die Jahre hinweg, in denen wir tanzen, haben wir so viele Tänzer kennen gelernt. Wir waren die Nutznießer des Square Dance Mottos "Square Dance ist in Musik gesetzte Freundschaft". Wohin wir auch gehen, wir werden mit offenen Armen empfangen und herzlich aufgenommen. Natürlich passiert das nicht zufällig. Wir strengen uns an, suchen uns Tänzer aus und laden uns selbst ein, zum Tanzen zu kommen.

Hier sind einige Hinweise für das Tanzen "weit weg von Zuhause".

• Verpflichte Dich "unterwegs" zu tanzen. Als wir unsere erste Reise nach Europa unternahmen, schauten wir in das "National Directory" und schrieben im Voraus. Jeder, dem wir schrieben, antwortete! Einer davon war Ted Ivin, ein Caller aus London. Er lud uns zum Tanzen mit seinem Club ein, den Gryphen Squares. Während unseres Aufenthalts tanzten wir auch mit ein paar anderen Clubs, einschließlich einem Tanz bei dem unvergleichlichen britischen Caller Paul Bristow. Das war der Abend, an dem uns eine britische Cuerin an unserem Hotel mit ihrem Auto abholte. Als wir zum Tanken anhielten, fragte ich, ob die Engländer das Benzin in Litern oder Gallonen kauften. Wir waren sprachlos, als sie antwortete "in Pfund". Natürlich meinte sie die britische Währung "Pfund Sterling"! Bei uns hat man sich neulich aufgeregt, als der Preis für eine Gallone Benzin auf fast 2.00$ kletterte. In Groß-Britannien schwankt der Preis um 5.00$ pro Gallone, schon seit Jahren!
• Schreibt, schreibt, schreibt. Schickt e-Mails, allerdings scheinen altmodischer Stift und Papier die besten Ergebnisse zu bringen. Bittet um Hilfe, um zu verstehen, in welcher Gegend die Clubs sind. Wir empfanden das Organisationsschema England zum Teil als Herausforderung, während die deutschen Postleitzahlen leicht zu verstehen sind. Habt keine Angst, Clubs in anderen Ländern auf Englisch zu schreiben. Es scheint immer jemanden zu geben, der Englisch lesen und schreiben kann. Es ist ein Pflichtfach für europäische Schüler. Wir empfanden die Deutschen als besonders gastfreundlich. Als wir für über einen Monat in Bitburg waren, waren wir zu weit weg von Square Dance Clubs als dass wir zu einer fremden Stadt fahren und noch am selben Abend wieder hätten heimfahren können. Tänzer aus Bonn, Köln, Trier, Baumholder, Aachen und einigen anderen Städten luden uns nicht nur zum Tanzen ein, sondern nahmen uns als Gäste über Nacht mit nach Hause. Wir riefen oft jemand aus dem Club an, den wir besuchen wollten. Häufig waren mehrere Anrufe nötig, bis wir mit jemand Kontakt hatten, der Englisch sprach. In wirklich jedem Fall wurden wir eingeladen, zum Tanzen zu kommen und über Nacht zu bleiben. 
• Sag was Du willst, es lohnt sich an einem "großen" Tanz am Samstagabend oder am Wochenende zu tanzen, aber mehr Spaß macht es, in einem Club zu tanzen. Da tanzt Du im "Heim" der Tänzer und bist wirklich ein "Gast". Als wir in Wien tanzen wollten, wussten wir, dass wir eine Unterkunft brauchen würden. Als Robert und Püppi Slezak-Mach uns für eine Woche "in ihr Apartment" einluden, versuchten wir erst abzulehnen, weil wir befürchteten, es würde zu eng. Sie schrieben uns zurück, dass das Apartment leer stünde und sie nicht dort wohnten. Wir nahmen die Einladung an und trafen auf herzliche, wundervolle Menschen. Wie Ted Ivin haben sie uns mehrmals zum Tanzen in San Francisco, Seattle, Denver und anderswo getroffen.
• Vor allem: tanzt, tanzt, tanzt. Tanzt zuhause. Heißt Gäste willkommen. Ladet Euch selbst zum Tanzen ein, wo immer ihr hinkommt. Denkt daran, dass IHR das Geschenk seid, wenn ihr zu einem anderen Club tanzen geht. Bittet um das Mikrophon, macht dem Caller und den Tänzern ein Kompliment, bedankt Euch für die Gastfreundschaft im Club. Habt keine Sorge wegen Eures Tanzvermögens, man wird Euch lieben, hegen und pflegen.
