| Over and over again people
complain that the traditional Square Dance customs fall into oblivion,
even the Graduation ceremony - we draw this conclusion from inquiries received.
We therefore looked for a description and we struck gold on the web-site
of Jim Penrod, an American caller. Unfortunately an ‘official' ECTA version
does not exist.
Of course you can cast the parts of the speakers differently. We have often seen it happen that the whole text has been read by one speaker at the microphone, which has acoustic advantages in bigger halls. Many people consider it more solemn to dim the light before the students' entry and not only at the beginning of the ‘journey' as suggested here. This article may also be read by ‘old hands' in case some of it is no longer familiar to them. |
Immer wieder wird beklagt, dass die traditionellen
Gebräuche im Square Dance in Vergessenheit geraten, sogar die Graduation-Zeremonie
- das schließen wir aus den Anfragen, die uns erreichen. Wir haben
uns deshalb nach einer Beschreibung umgesehen und wurden auf der Web-Site
eines amerikanischen Callers - Jim Penrod - fündig. Eine "offizielle"
ECTA-Version gibt es leider nicht.
Die Rollen der Sprecher können natürlich auch anders als hier vorgeschlagen verteilt werden. Wir kennen es so, dass alle Texte von einem Sprecher am Mikrophon verlesen werden, was in größeren Hallen akustisch Vorteile hat. Manche halten es auch für feierlicher, den Raum schon beim Einzug der Students abgedunkelt zu haben, nicht erst bei Beginn der "Reise", wie hier vorgeschlagen. Dieser Artikel kann auch von "alten Hasen" gelesen werden, denen vielleicht manches nicht mehr geläufig ist. |
| Four tables (card tables are nice) should
be placed around the hall, usually in the four corners. A candle will be
placed on each table. (Don't forget the matches.) Usually one of the club
officer couples will be stationed at each table. If an officer is not available,
it is always good to honor an "angel" couple that has helped throughout
the class. The club can have the graduates in another room or outside the
hall where they can file in as couples or individuals while a marching
record is being played. Some clubs have the club's membership form lines
on either side of the aisle as the new graduates enter. The new graduates
will form a semi-circle in front of the callers stand.
The club president and partner usually escort the graduates. Items needed:

Vier Tische (kleine Beistelltische eignen
sich gut) werden in der Halle verteilt, normalerweise in den vier Ecken.
Auf jeden Tisch wird eine Kerze gestellt (Streichhölzer nicht vergessen!).
Üblicherweise wird an jedem Tisch ein Paar aus dem Board postiert,
es ist aber auch schön, ein Paar zu nehmen, das während des Kurses
als "Angel" geholfen hat. Der Club wird vielleicht die Graduation-Kandidaten
in einem anderen Raum oder außerhalb der Halle versammeln, damit
sie als Paare oder auch einzeln zu einer Platte mit 4/4-Takt einlaufen
können. Einige Clubs lassen ihre Mitglieder auch Spalier stehen, wenn
die Kandidaten hereinkommen - diese bilden einen Halbkreis vor dem Standort
des Callers.
Der Clubpräsident und seine Partnerin begleiten üblicherweise die zu Graduierenden. Benötigte Dinge:

After the candle is lit, one of the couples stationed at that table will read: "Square Dancing is a common bond between us as friends. Wherever you shall visit, or whomsoever shall visit you, never let it be said that you were not friendly. Square Dance is "Friendship set to music". Greet others, and be courteous to others as you would have them be to you. In Square Dancing, you can develop lifetime friendships." It now becomes your duty to offer ideas and suggestions. But it is also becomes your duty to abide by the group's decisions. You may not get your way every time, but the democratic way in Square Dancing, as in any democracy, the majority rules. Once a decision has been reached, support that decision." Always remember that Square Dancing is a recreation. The purpose is to have fun and a night to relax and to forget about the worries you faced today and may face tomorrow. Each dance night is to be with friends, for physical and mental relaxation, and to have fun. Keep these goals in mind.
