SD in SD

Of course all of you know what the first SD means, it stands for Square Dance. But the second? It is a widely used abbreviation for San Diego. San Diego is the most southern city in the California, situated directly at the Mexican border and at the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. It is the oldest city in this part of the US and like many other settlings in California was founded by Spaniards as a missionary station. This city was one of the locations Marion and I visited in our holidays in the United States.

When Marion and I planned our holidays we naturally wanted to indulge our most beloved hobby, Square Dancing. Via the blessings of modern technology, i.e. the internet, we quickly found out that during our vacation at the beginning of November there would be a Square Dance Festival in the southwest, the "Fiesta de la Cuadrilla". This is a Square Dance event that is organised by the clubs in the region of San Diego once a year. In the year 2000 it took place for the 50est time and is held always on the first weekend in November. We looked for a place to stay via the internet and also booked electronically.

The Fiesta always takes place at the Balboa Park in San Diego. It is a large park, even larger than the Central Park in New York. It hosts the world-famous San Diego Zoo and the Exhibition Park, an ensemble of different buildings that were erected for the Panamerican Exhibition in 1915 to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and is now used mainly for different museums (Art Museum, Natural History Museum, Automobile Museum etc.). In three of these buildings the fiesta was held.

The dance program started on Friday evening and lasted till noon on Sunday. The dance program was Mainstream, Plus and Advanced, and as mostly in the US the majority of dancers danced Plus. In MS we mainly danced with people who were at the end of their class or just had graduated. In total there were about 600 dancers who registered. Besides Square Dancing you could also do some line dancing and clogging. They had three professional callers who did all the calling. On Sunday they were on the stage as a trio and called and sang together. By this we again found out that dancing is even more fun with more than one caller on stage, interacting and working together as a team. The program was great, we really got into a sweat.

Many of the dancers where astonished to meet Square Dancers from Germany and when we squared up in a new Square we often heard.: "Ah, you are the couple from Germany". We had many interesting conversation, mainly about dancing but also on many other topics. A lot of dancers were very astonished to learn that in Germany the callers call in English, they thought that in every country they call in their native language. The hours of the festival just flew by - or just danced by, for as all of you know Square Dancing never is boring and the end of dancing always comes much quicker than you expect.

After the fiesta was over we visited a club night of a Contra club in San Diego. We had lots of fun there too and even if you never danced Contra before (we also only did so once) many of the figures are similar to Square Dance and with a short introduction you soon can dance together with the others and it is really funny.

Obviously we weren't in San Diego only for dancing, we also did a lot of sight seeing. The city really is worth visiting, besides the gorgeous location and the very pleasant climate (between 20 and 25 Celsius or 68 and 77 Fahrenheit in November) the city has a lot of interesting places and attractions. Besides the zoo and the Balboa Park with the museums there is the harbour with a congress centre (it is the largest Navy harbour in the US with aircraft carriers etc.) Sea World, the beautifully restored down town area and last but not least the beaches. We only saw part of all this and if we get the chance, we will love to go back to San Diego, Cal., not only for but of course also because of Square Dancing.

Natürlich wisst ihr alle, was das erste SD bedeutet, es steht für Square Dance. Aber das zweite? Nun, es ist eine gebräuchliche Abkürzung für San Diego. San Diego ist die südlichste Stadt in Kalifornien, direkt an der mexikanischen Grenze und am Pazifik gelegen. Zusätzlich ist es die älteste Stadt in diesem Teil der Vereinigten Staaten, wie so viele Ansiedlungen in Kalifornien durch Spanier als Missionsstation gegründet. Diese Stadt war eines der Reiseziele, die Marion und ich in unserem USA-Urlaub ansteuerten.

Als Marion und ich unseren Urlaub in den USA planten, wollten wir natürlich auch unserem liebsten Hobby, dem Square Dance, frönen. Durch die Segnungen der modernen Technik in der Form des Internets hatten wir bald herausgefunden, daß zu der Zeit unseres Urlaubs Anfang November im Südwesten ein Square Dance Festival stattfinden würde, die "Fiesta de la Cuadrilla". Dies ist eine große SD-Veranstaltung, die durch die Clubs in der Region San Diego gemeinsam jährlich ausgerichtet wird. Im Jahr 2000 fand es bereits das 50ste mal statt, immer am ersten Wochenende im November. Wir erkundigten uns per e-mail nach einer Unterkunft in der Nähe des Tanzplatzes und buchten dann auch elektronisch.

Die Fiesta findet jedes Jahr im Balboa-Park in San Diego statt. Dies ist ein großer Stadtpark, der noch erheblich größer ist, als der Central Park in New York. Neben dem weltberühmten San Diego Zoo beherbergt dieser Park auch noch den Exhibition Park, ein Ensemble von verschiedenen Ausstellungsgebäuden, die zur Panamerikanischen Ausstellung 1915 zur Feier der Eröffnung des Panama-Kanals errichtet wurden und jetzt hauptsächlich für verschiedene Museen genutzt werden (Kunstmuseeum, Naturgeschichtliches Museum, Automobilmuseum etc.). In dreien dieser Gebäude fand die Fiesta statt.

Das Programm begann Freitag abends, ging Samstag den ganzen Tag und klang dann am Sonntag langsam aus. Tanzprogramm war MS bis A, wobei, wie in den USA üblich, die meisten Leute Plus tanzten, im MS-Programm tanzten hauptsächlich Leute, die am Ende ihrer MS-Ausbildung standen oder frisch graduiert waren. Insgesamt waren über 600 Tänzer registriert. Neben Square Dance wurde auch Round und Clogging angeboten. Es waren drei professionelle Caller engagiert, die das gesamte Programm bestritten. Am Sonntag standen sie teilweise zu dritt auf der Bühne und callten und sangen gemeinsam. Dabei konnten wir wieder einmal feststellen, daß, wenn mehrere Caller gemeinsam agieren, das Tanzen noch mehr Spaß macht. Das Programm war sehr fetzig und es ging flott zur Sache, wir kamen ganz gut in Schwitzen.

Viele Mittänzer waren erstaunt, auf Square Dancer aus Deutschland zu treffen und wenn wir in einen neuen Square kamen, hieß es oft "Ach, ihr seid das Paar aus Deutschland". Wir haben uns mit den anderen Tänzern sehr angeregt unterhalten, natürlich viel über's Tanzen, aber auch über alle möglichen anderen Dinge. Viele waren verwundert, daß in Deutschland nicht auf deutsch gecalled wird, sie dachten, in jedem Land würde in der Landessprache gecalled. Die Stunden des Festivals vergingen wie im Fluge - oder besser wie im Tanz, denn wie ihr alle wisst wird einem beim Square Dance die Zeit nie lang und das Ende des Tanzes ist schneller da, als man es erwartet.

Nach der Fiesta waren wir noch bei einem Clubabend eines Contra-Clubs in San Diego. Auch da hatten wir viel Spaß und auch wenn man noch nie Contra getanzt hat (wir hatten es auch erst einmal vorher), so sind doch sehr viele Figuren gleich wie beim Square Dance und man kommt mit einer kurzen Einführung schnell hinein, es ist wirklich lustig.

Wir waren selbstverständlich nicht nur zum Tanzen in San Diego, sondern haben auch viel Sight Seeing gemacht. Die Stadt ist wirklich einen Besuch wert, neben der tollen Lage und dem hervorragenden Klima (im November noch zwischen 20 und 25 Grad) hat die Stadt viele Sehenswürdigkeiten zu bieten. Neben dem Zoo und dem Balboa Park mit den Museen gibt es den Hafen mit Kongreßzentrum (es ist übrigens der größte Marinehafen der USA mit Flugzeugträgern etc.), Sea World, die sehr schön hergerichtete Innenstadt und natürlich die Strände. Wir haben sicher noch lange nicht alles gesehen und wenn sich die Gelegenheit bietet, werden wir sicher gerne wieder - nicht nur aber sicher auch - zum Tanzen nach SD, Cal. fahren.
