Cocoon Building / Kapseln wir uns ab?

I have spoken about this theme in the past and feel as though I must try to caution everybody again about what I am seeing each and every week.

I recently called two special dances on two successive weekends in two different parts of Europe...and saw the exact same thing both times. They both concern me, however one more then the other. One of the dances that I called at, I had the pleasure of sharing the dance with one of Australia's best callers, and during his workshop, I heard two dancers literally complain that they could not understand one word the Australian caller was saying, and it was not the dialect either. One dancer went so far as to say in the square "Why doesn't he say all that in German?"

Before you go too far, let me explain something. I know full well that we are living in Germany....I also know that most of the successful callers here teach in German, me included. I teach my students in German in the beginning, however when they hear the same directional terms a second and third time, they hear it in German.....and in English. When they hear the same terms a fourth and fifth time, they hear it in English....and in German. When they hear it a sixth time, they hear it only in English.

I have taught well over 1,600 dancers to dance in Germany, and most of them do not speak any English at all...however each and every one of them can go to a dance where an American, or British, or Swedish caller is performing and hold their heads up high, because they can understand the workshop material that is being used. They may not be fluent in the English language, however they are very fluent in the Square Dance English that is ever so important.

I care very much about this activity and am very concerned about the lack of Square Dance English being taught by callers in their classes. I am seeing it more and more every weekend. We are slowly building a cocoon around the activity that will close very soon, completely isolating us from the rest of the square dance world. Is this what we really want? Is this what you think this activity should be like? Do you want the day to come when top callers from other countries will not be welcomed into Germany because they do not speak German? We are slowly closing the cocoon and will soon be isolated from the rest of the square dance world, if we are not careful.

A proper mixture of German and English is the necessary ingredient to prevent the cocoon from closing. If your callers are not giving you this mixture, talk to them. If they are unaware of how to solve the problem, have them contact me for help. I do not want to see the cocoon close....nor do you, I hope. Together, we can prevent this from happening, but it will take your help.

Ich habe mich schon früher zu diesem Thema geäußert, aber ich glaube, ich muss nochmals versuchen, alle vor etwas zu warnen, was ich immer wieder bemerke.

Ich callte an zwei Specials an aufeinander folgenden Wochenenden in verschiedenen Teilen Europas - und erlebte beide Male dasselbe. Beides betraf mich, einmal allerdings mehr als das andere Mal. Bei einem der Tänze, die ich callte, hatte ich das Vergnügen, mit einem von Australiens besten Callern auf der Bühne zu stehen. Während seines Workshops hörte ich, wie sich zwei Tänzer förmlich beschwerten, dass sie kein Wort von dem verstanden, was der australische Caller sagte, und das lag nicht an seinem Dialekt. Ein Tänzer ging sogar soweit, im Square zu fragen "Warum sagt er das nicht alles auf Deutsch?"

Bevor ihr euch zu sehr aufregt, lasst mich einiges erklären. Ich weiß sehr wohl, dass wir hier in Deutschland leben - ich weiß auch, dass die meisten erfolgreichen Caller hier auf Deutsch unterrichten, mich eingeschlossen. Auch ich unterrichte meine Students anfangs auf Deutsch. Wenn sie allerdings dieselbe Anweisung ein zweites und drittes Mal hören, dann hören sie sie auf Deutsch - und auf Englisch.. Wenn sie dieselbe Anweisung ein viertes und fünftes Mal hören, dann hören sie sie auf Englisch - und auf Deutsch. Wenn sie sie schließlich ein sechstes Mal hören, dann nur noch auf Englisch.

Ich habe gut über 1600 Tänzern in Deutschland das Tanzen beigebracht und die meisten von ihnen sprechen überhaupt kein Englisch - trotzdem kann jeder von ihnen zu einem Tanz gehen, an dem ein amerikanischer, britischer oder schwedischer Caller auf dem Programm steht und sie können stolz sein, weil sie den Workshop verstehen. Sie können vielleicht nicht fließend Englisch, aber sie sind perfekt in Square Dance Englisch - nur das ist wichtig.

Ich kümmere mich sehr um diese Aktivität und bin sehr besorgt darüber, dass die Caller in ihren Kursen nur unzureichend Square Dance Englisch lehren. Ich bemerke das mehr und mehr an jedem Wochenende. Wir bilden allmählich eine Mauer um die Aktivität, die sich sehr bald schließen wird und uns von der übrigen Square Dance Welt isolieren wird. Wollen wir das wirklich? Glaubt ihr, dass unsere Aktivität so aussehen soll? Wollt ihr wirklich den Tag kommen lassen, an dem Topcaller aus anderen Ländern in Deutschland nicht mehr willkommen sind, weil sie nicht Deutsch sprechen? Wir schließen langsam die Mauer um uns und werden bald von der übrigen Square Dance Welt abgekapselt sein, wenn wir nicht aufpassen.

Eine angepasste Mischung aus Deutsch und Englisch ist das notwendige Mittel, um dem Schließen dieser Mauer vorzubeugen. Wenn eure Caller euch diese Mischung nicht geben, sprecht mit ihnen. Wenn sie nicht wissen, wie sie diese Aufgabe lösen sollen, lasst sie mit mir Kontakt zur Hilfestellung aufnehmen. Ich möchte nicht erleben, dass sich die Mauer schließt - und ihr hoffentlich auch nicht. Zusammen können wir es verhindern, aber eure Hilfe ist nötig.
