"Students welcome"

During the past years one could more and more read "Students welcome".

The annual Special Dance actually is the opportunity for each club to demonstrate itself and its caller. And isn't it a great feeling if the same enthusiastic people show up each year again? In order to achieve this, the program must be attractive and must animate the dancers so they accept a longer drive.

This argument doesn't seem to be valid anymore. The only importance is how many hundreds of dancers have signed the guest book.

There are more and more dancers who cut out visiting a Special Dance if the program mainly offers Basic, i.e. Basic-MS-Basic-Plus-Basic-MS etc. Offering one hour of Plus or A-dancing as a decoy doesn't change anything. This is out of all proportion to the long drive and the incurring costs.

As long as a badge or a dangle has been sold, it doesn't bother the organisers if mainly long-time graduated dancers leave the dance hall 3-4 hours before the dance ends.

Above-mentioned comment is absolutely not directed against students since our hobby cannot survive without them. This wonderful hobby, however, has to be learned first. And as an entry, Student Parties and Jamborees are being offered.

Isn't it a sad picture for all of us if the entire floor breaks down while dancing Basic only because the caller has called a left-handed figure? Disappointment for the students, annoyed faces of the graduated dancers when the square has broken down for the umpteenth time. It can't be the meaning of Square Dance and it doesn't give any bonus to the organisers. The only thing Students learn during that night, if they don't know how to do it already, is to hop, twirl, bump and… and …. and…., exactly what shouldn't belong to the basic program.

The big leap into the "full Square Dance life" actually starts with the MS graduation, only then the dancing doors should be opened to newly graduated dancers. This is also meant to be an incentive for the "new blood". The way it presently is surfeits the students there is nothing more to learn until the graduation - no need to travel.

Let the students learn how to Square Dance in their own club. It is our duty to give them support there. Then we can say that we have done something positive for our hobby.

In den letzten Jahren liest man immer öfter auf den Flyern für Special Dance "Students willkommen".

Das alljährliche Special ist doch die Gelegenheit für jeden Club, sich und seinen Caller darzustellen. Und ist es nicht ein super Gefühl, wenn jedes Jahr die gleichen Leute begeistert wiederkommen? Um dies zu erreichen, muss das angebotene Programm die Tänzer ansprechen und auch animieren, einen weiteren Weg auf sich zu nehmen.

Dieses Argument gilt scheinbar nicht mehr. Wichtig ist nur noch, wieviele hundert Teilnehmer sich in das Gästebuch eingetragen haben.

Es gibt immer mehr Tänzer, die darauf verzichten, eine Veranstaltung zu besuchen, wenn im Abendprogramm vorwiegend Basic angeboten wird, z.B. Basic-MS-Basic-Plus-Basic-MS usw. Daran ändert auch nichts, dass mittags (als Lockvogel?) eine Stunde Plus oder A angeboten wird. Dies steht in keinem Verhältnis zur langen Anfahrt und den entstehenden Kosten.

Dass sehr viele - langjährig graduierte - Tänzer die Halle 3 bis 4 Stunden vor Specialende verlassen, interessiert die Veranstalter nicht mehr, soweit das Badge oder Dangle verkauft ist.

Obiger Kommentar richtet sich absolut nicht gegen Students, da unser Hobby ohne sie nicht überleben kann. Aber dieses wunderschöne Hobby muss erst mal gelernt werden. Und als Einstieg werden Student-Partys und -Jamboree angeboten.

Es ist doch ein für alle trauriges Bild, wenn beim Basic alles steht, nur weil der Caller eine Figur "Left Hand" ansagt. Enttäuschung bei den Students, genervte Gesichter bei den Graduierten, wenn der Square das x-temal zusammenbricht. Das kann nicht der Sinn des Square Dance sein und es bringt auch den Organisatoren keine Pluspunkte. Das einzige, was die Students an diesem Abend lernen, falls sie es nicht schon können, ist: hüpfen, twirlen, bumpen und... und... und... genau das, was nicht unbedingt zum Basicprogramm gehört.

Der grosse Sprung ins "volle Square Dance-Leben" beginnt doch mit der MS-Graduierung. Danach erst sollten dem Neutänzer alle "Tanztüren" offen stehen. Dies ist auch als Anreiz für den "Nachwuchs" gedacht. Wie es jedoch zur Zeit läuft, sind die Students bis zur Graduierung schon übersättigt und da es nichts Neues mehr gibt, nicht reisefreudig.

Lassen wir die Students im eigenen Club Square Dance lernen. Es ist unsere Pflicht, sie dort zu unterstützen. Dann können wir sagen, dass wir etwas Positives für unser Hobby getan haben.
