Visiting the / Besuch bei den Four Gates Neubrandenburg SDC

It is almost a tradition that the Barbarossa Promenaders Gelnhausen and the Hanau Golden Squares use the long weekend around Corpus Christi for visiting as yet unknown areas and their home-clubs. This year it was to be Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Members of the Barbarossa Promenaders, the Golden Squares, the Bernemer Squeezers Frankfurt, the Smoky Socks Gross-Gerau, the Witches & Wizards Rodgau and the EAASDC joined the fantastic trip.

A marvellous landscape was waiting for us, formed ca. 15000 years ago during three ice-ages by gigantic glaciers, moving up to the today's Berlin-area.

Already the way to Neubrandenburg offered a highlight: Waren, the pearl at the Müritz. During our short stay we explored the beauty of the town and tested the local food in different restaurants.

Friday: the surroundings of Neubrandenburg. We visited a "Slawendorf" near Passentin with wooden houses rebuilt the old way. We followed the inglorious history of witch-hunting in Penzlin at the museum of the old castle and in its ill-famed cellar "Hexenkeller" (witches' cellar). Two of our male group members had to feel the torture like in the middle-ages. But, don't worry, they withstood the torment bravely and were dubbed a knight with a large wooden spoon after we had a mysterious drink "Hexentrunk".

Remarkable: Our guide's name was Engel (angel), and that in a "Hexenkeller".

Don't be surprised to meet her in a square in a year or two - she was so charmed by our hobby that she delighted one of our knights with a kiss, but not before we had danced a tip in the yard of the castle.

Meanwhile we were really hungry. We knew already what we would eat, but not where. That we would learn after a short journey on roads that few tourists know. We had a wonderful view of Tollensesee, saw Alt Rehse a village in best condition and stopped at a country guesthouse, a treasure from olden times with drinking maxims on the walls and easy-chairs from GDR-times.

We are nearly worn out, but the programme must go on: Around the Tollensesee. But how?

We had been round the lake by bus already, walking would be too far - the lake measures 11 km. So what?

And why are we at the aerodrome Neubrandenburg-Trollenhagen right now? Impossible! A circuit, and that with costs less than 400.- DM? How could that be? But it was terrific, simply fantastic. The weather allowed the best views.

Specially for us the Four Gates had changed their club-night from Monday to Friday, and the dance location, too. So we were dancing in the historical walls of the ruins of Burg Stargard. Even dancers from the Ryck Bridges from Greifswald and their caller Marco Labahn showed up. By the way Greifswald is worth a trip too.

Saturday: the city of Neubrandenburg. Finally we got to know the origin of the name Four Gates. We were sightseeing the old, well-maintained town wall with four gates and nice, restored guardhouses "Wieckhaeuser".

And than the next highlight: A square dance performance together with the Four Gates within the scope of the International Tollenseseemarathon in the market-place of Neubrandenburg. Again simply fantastic.

Now the summer toboggan-slide was waiting for us, simply ........, you now already. The weather played ball once more, as did the quick departure for our best enjoyment.

To end our trip we went to "Pantha Rosa" a ranch with horses, mules, a llama, some exotic birds and different poultry. Even together with our friends, the Four Gates, we had trouble to finish eating the two grilled turkeys. We finished the after-party in our hotel-lounge with some home-made cocktails. We can recommend them!

Sleeping late? - impossible. We intended getting back to Hanau without any delay.

Hanau Golden Squares

Es ist fast schon zur Tradition geworden, dass die Barbarossa Promenaders aus Gelnhausen und die Hanau Golden Squares das Fronleichnam-Wochenende nutzen, um uns noch unbekannte Gegenden und einen der dort beheimateten Clubs zu besuchen. In diesem Jahr sollte es das Bundesland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern sein.

Und es wurde eine tolle Fahrt. Dabei waren Mitglieder der Barbarossas, der Golden Squares, der Bernemer Squeezers Frankfurt, der Smoky Socks Groß-Gerau, der Witches & Wizards aus Rodgau bis hin zur EAASDC.

Eine herrliche Landschaft erwartete uns, herausgebildet durch die Eiszeiten, die bis vor ca. 15000 Jahren mit riesigen Gletschern bis in die Region des heutigen Berlin vorstießen.

Schon die Hinreise bot ein Highlight: Waren, die Perle an der Müritz. Wir nutzten unseren Aufenthalt, um die Stadt zu erkunden und die Heimatküche in verschiedenen Restaurants zu testen.

Der Freitag gehörte der Umgebung von Neubrandenburg. Wir besuchten das Slawendorf in Passentin, ein Projekt mit Holzhäusern alter Bauweisen. Danach ging es in die unrühmliche Geschichte der Hexenverfolgung nach Penzlin, ins Museum der Alten Burg mit dem berüchtigten Hexenkeller. Dort haben zwei unserer männlichen Mitfahrer, die Foltermethoden des Mittelalters zu spüren bekommen. Keine Angst, sie haben die Qualen tapfer ertragen und wurden, nach einem geheimnisvollen Hexentrunk, zum Ritter geschlagen, mit einem Kochlöffel, wohlgemerkt.

Bezeichnenderweise hieß unsere Führerin Frau Engel. Und das im Hexenkeller.

Wenn Ihr Frau Engel in den nächsten Jahren mal in einem Square seht, wundert Euch nicht, sie ist von unserem Hobby derart begeistert, dass sie, aber erst nach einem Square Dance Tip im Burghof, einen unserer Ritter mit einem Kuss beglückte.

Inzwischen fing uns der Magen an zu knurren. Zwar wussten wir schon, was wir essen werden, aber wo, das erfuhren wir erst nach einer kurzen Fahrt auf Strassen, die nicht jeder Tourist kennenlernt. Wir hatten einen wundervollen Blick auf den Tollensesee, sahen das besterhaltene Dorf Alt Rehse und kehrten in einen Landgasthof ein, einem Kleinod aus alten Zeiten, mit Trinksprüchen an der Wand und Polsterstühlen aus der DDR-Zeit.

Wir waren ganz schön geschafft, aber weiter im Programm: Rund um den Tollensesee. Ja, was sollte jetzt noch kommen.

Drumherum gefahren sind wir schon, zu Fuß wäre es zu weit, der See ist ganze 11 km lang. Also, was gibt`s da noch?

Und, warum sind wir jetzt auf dem Flughafen Neubrandenburg-Trollenhagen? Nein, das gibt's doch gar nicht. Einen Rundflug, und das im Reisepreis von nicht mal 400.- DM? Wie geht das? Aber es war toll, einfach toll. Das Wetter erlaubte uns beste Sicht.

Extra für uns haben die Four Gates ihren Clubabend von Montag auf Freitag gelegt und den Tanzplatz gewechselt. So konnten wir in den historischen Mauern der Ruine der Burg Stargard tanzen, ein weiteres Highlight. Toll war auch, dass die Ryck Bridge Dancers aus Greifswald mit ihrem Caller Marco Labahn, dabei waren. Auch Greifswald ist eine Reise wert.

Samstag. Heute war Neubrandenburg selbst dran. Endlich erfuhren wir, woher der Name Four Gates kommt. Wir besichtigten die alte, gut erhaltene Wehranlage, mit den vier Toren und restaurierten, schicken Wieckhäusern. Und dann kam das nächste Highlight:

Eine Square Dance Vorführung zusammen mit den Four Gates im Rahmen des Internationalen Tollenseseemarathon, auf dem Marktplatz in Neubrandenburg. Zusammen waren wir fünf Squares und haben inmitten des Publikums getanzt. Auch das, einfach toll.

Jetzt wartete die Sommerrodelbahn auf uns, einfach ..., na, Ihr wisst schon. Das Wetter spielte einmal mehr mit und so wurden die rasanten Abfahrten richtig zum Vergnügen.

Zum Abschluss unserer Reise waren wir auf der Ranch "Pantha Rosa", einem Reiterhof mit, natürlich Pferden aber auch anderen Tieren wie Eseln, einem Lama, einer exotischen Vogelsammlung und verschiedenem "Federvieh". Wir hatten Mühe, gemeinsam mit unseren Freunden, den Four Gates, die zwei Puten (nicht vom Hof), zu verzehren. Den Rest unserer Afterparty gestalteten wir in unsrem Hotel mit hauseigenem Cocktail. Nur zu empfehlen!

Lange Schlafen ging nicht. Wir wollten ja ohne größeren Aufenthalt nach Hanau zurück.

Wir möchten uns an dieser Stelle nochmals recht herzlich bei Inge Nicolai für‘s Busfahren, bei Arnold Tonhäuser für‘s Callen und bei unseren Gastgebern, den Four Gates für die tolle Gastfreundschaft bedanken.

Wir bieten allen Clubs an, das Konzept der Reise zu übernehmen, eine sehr schöne Gegend und viele neue Freunde kennenzulernen. Ja, liebe Neubrandenburger, kriegt keine Angst, wenn Ihr wieder gefragt werdet, ob Ihr einen Eurer Clubabende verlegt. Wir haben erfahren, es lohnt sich.
