Scotland's 1^st International Square Dance Festival

We originally didn't want to give so much space to this event that recently took place - from our geographical viewpoint - on the fringes of Europe. But, both letters are so enthusiastic, that we didn't want to cut them. Perhaps one or other reader will become so infected by this enthusiasm that he/she will want to book a trip there next time?"

Wir wollten diesem Ereignis, das - von unserem Wohnort aus und rein geographisch gesehen - eher in einem Randgebiet Europas stattfand, ursprünglich nicht so viel Platz einräumen. Beide Briefe klingen aber so begeistert, dass wir sie nicht kürzen wollten. Vielleicht lässt sich ja der eine oder andere Leser von dieser Begeisterung anstecken und bucht bei nächster Gelegenheit auch eine Reise dorthin?

There is something like a pioneering spirit in the air, that the Aberdeen Kilt Kickers and the Cupar OK Square Dancers have called up. After all, this is about the very first event of this kind up here in Scotland. And many, mainly British square dancers, followed their call.

162 dancers from 40 clubs and 7 countries came to St. Andrews for six days. Not (only) to play golf, as you could assume by the name of the town - the stronghold of golf. Two of the world's best callers, Paul Bristow and Thorsten Geppert, gave their best to keep up our good spirits and to keep us moving during this week. Jan Smith and Mal Owen from the National Western Dance Company in the English town of Bath pulled the organisational strings in the background.

After checking out the city on Friday we were drawn by a first warm-up dance into the Madras College in Kilrymont Road at the other end of the city. If not earlier, now the question arose to one who travelled a long way from far away Munich: "Am I the only one up here?" But at the door you could see one or the other badge from (South-) Germany - and in the middle of all even the badge of the Munich Roller Coasters was shining.

As I said before, the first night was for warm-up. Then, on the second night, after the first workshop, the official opening ceremony was held, where they introduced the individual clubs. Of course they came from Scotland, but also from England and Wales, from the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, the USA (more exactly from Washington) and from Germany.

At the opening ceremony they had the Grand March, of course. It was the first International Festival where they played the bagpipes at the Grand March. For those who still remember the last Student Party in Munich, an explanation: In Munich it was just a regional event, but this was an international event.

It seemed very natural that the Scottish people wore their kilts for this event. It was less natural (but the more amusing) that Paul and Thorsten had to wear kilts as well. Thorsten from Paderborn already knew this procedure, but Paul from London obviously felt uncomfortable in his new outfit. For him it was the first time up there in far away Scotland ;-) and that's why he never had the chance to get used to Scottish traditions.

During the next week we had many opportunities to do workshops during the daytime and to dance at night. But there was enough time left for exploring the city which, because of its attractions and its wonderful beach promenade, even by itself is worth the trip. The centre of the university town of St. Andrews, which dates from the Middle Ages, together with St. Andrews cathedral and St. Andrews castle are especially worth a visit.

At the end of the week every single one of us was urged to convince the ones back home that their next trip to Scotland should lead them to the club nights of the organising clubs, the Cupar OKs and the Aberdeen Kilt Kickers.

Ein gewisser Pioniergeist kommt auf. Immerhin geht es um die allererste Veranstaltung dieser Art hier oben in Schottland. Die Aberdeen Kilt Kickers und die Cupar OK Square Dancers haben gerufen. Und hauptsächlich britische Square Dancers sind dem Aufruf gefolgt.

162 Tänzer aus 40 Clubs und 7 Ländern kamen für sechs Tage nach St. Andrews. Nicht (nur) um Golf zu spielen, wie der Ort - die Hochburg des Golfspiels - vielleicht vermuten ließe. Zwei der besten Caller der Welt, Paul Bristow und Thorsten Geppert, gaben ihr bestes, um uns während dieser Woche bei Laune und in Bewegung zu halten. Jan Smith und Mal Owen von der National Western Dance Company im englischen Bath zogen die organisatorischen Fäden im Hintergrund.

Nach einer ersten Stadterkundung zog uns am Freitagabend ein erster warmup dance ins Madras College in die Kilrymont Road am anderen Ende der Stadt. Spätestens hier stellt sich einem Weitgereisten aus dem fernen München die Frage "Bin ich alleine hier oben?" Doch am Eingang tummelte sich tatsächlich auch das ein oder andere (süd-) deutsche Badge -- zwischendrin leuchtete sogar das Badge der Munich Roller Coasters durch.

Der erste Abend diente wie gesagt als warm up. Am zweiten Abend, nach den ersten Workshops, fand dann die offizielle Eröffnungszeremonie statt. Hier wurden auch die einzelnen Clubs vorgestellt. Sie kamen selbstverständlich aus Schottland, aber auch aus England und Wales, aus Holland, Schweden, Norwegen, der Schweiz, den USA, genauer aus Washington, und aus Deutschland.

Bei der Eröffnung wurde natürlich zum Grand March aufgespielt. Dieser Grand March war der erste auf einem internationalen Festival, der auf einem Dudelsack gepfiffen wurde. Wer sich an die letzte Student Party in München erinnert fühlt, dem sei noch mal vor Augen geführt, dass es sich in München "nur" um eine regionale Veranstaltung handelte, hier jedoch um ein internationales Event.

Wie selbstverständlich erschien es auch, dass die Schotten dabei ihren Kilt trugen. Weniger selbstverständlich, dafür um so amüsanter war die Tatsache, dass auch Paul und Thorsten in Kilts gesteckt wurden. Thorsten aus Paderborn kannte diesen Brauch bereits, jedoch Paul aus London fühlte sich in seinem neuen Outfit sichtlich unbehaglich. Er war immerhin das erste mal hier heroben im für ihn fernen Schottland ;-) und er hatte daher nicht die Möglichkeit, sich an schottische Gepflogenheiten zu gewöhnen.

Während der nächsten Woche hatten wir noch viel Gelegenheit, bei den Workshops tagsüber und auf den Abendveranstaltungen ausgiebig zu tanzen. Trotzdem blieb zwischendurch immer noch genug Zeit, die Stadt zu erkunden, die mit ihren Sehenswürdigkeiten und ihrer wunderschönen Strandpromenade allein schon eine Reise wert ist. Das mittelalterliche Zentrum der Universitätsstadt St. Andrews mit der St. Andrews Cathedral und dem St. Andrews Castle ist besonders sehenswert.

Am Ende der Woche wurde noch jeder einzelne von uns aufgefordert, die Daheimgebliebenen davon zu überzeugen, dass sie beim nächsten Schottland-Urlaub unbedingt die Clubabende der Veranstalter, der Cupar OKs und der Aberdeen Kilt Kickers besuchen sollen.

From April 12 to 16, 2002, even to April 17, 2002, there was "Scotland's 1^st International Square Dance Festival" in St. Andrews. St. Andrews is located on the East coast of Scotland and is more connected to playing golf than to Square Dancing. In St. Andrews you can find the oldest golf course in the world (Old Course) as well as Scotland's oldest university town. It's a beautiful little town, even worth a visit without Square Dancing. 

Scotland has 2 Square Dance Clubs, the Old Kirk Dancer in Cupar (about 10 miles from St. Andrews) and the Kilt Kickers in Aberdeen. These two clubs have jointly organised this festival. Especially Jan and Mal have invested a lot of time so that everything went smoothly. I think it is very courageous to plan an event of 5-6 days and to know for certain that more than 80% of the visitors have to take days off from work as well as take accommodation away from home. But the idea was good, as the success of this event proved. The dance hall was in Madras College on the outskirts of the town with a parquet floor that was comfortable for our feet. On Friday night we started with Plus and Mainstream, alternating, but also with Paul and Thorsten, alternating. During the ensuing days, Paul Bristow from England and Thorsten Geppert from Germany ensured that we will not forget Scotland too soon. The dancers were so enthusiastic that they added April 17 to their agenda. They danced daily from 10:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., of course interrupted by breaks. In the mornings we "worked" (workshops), and at night it was "just for fun". During the longer breaks in the afternoons we went sightseeing to St. Andrews or we strolled through the town together with our new friends, while Thorsten improved his handicap on the holy lawn of St. Andrews. Most of the Scottish people were wearing their traditional costumes, the kilt, during the Grand March. Both callers turned into Scots and Thorsten has now the title "Mac" Geppert. There were 160 dancers from 7 countries, among them 15 from Germany. Although some of you will say: "What are 160 people for a festival?" But you have to consider that almost everyone had a long journey and not everyone can afford to take some days off for his hobby. I have met so many new and kind Square Dancers that I will never forget this trip. The Scot's hospitality and helpfulness were immense. 

Nights were spent in hotels, boarding houses, at a nearby camping place, either with one's own motor caravan or in rented spacious "chalets". So there was something for everyone and everybody's means.

At the end of the event we said goodbye to each other with the words "See you in 2004". Because then the same event will take place for the 2^nd time, with the same callers and probably with the same dancers. 

For the last 2 days of our vacation in Scotland Peter, Gabriele and I took off for the Highlands. I, at least, wanted to see a little bit of this country. Scotland is beautiful and now I think that we shouldn't spend our vacations merely in the South, especially since the weather was good. The sun was shining almost every day.

Of course I should not forget to mention the great club night of the Kilt Kickers in Aberdeen on Thursday. Since the 3 club callers had to stay in St. Andrews we danced to tapes. But we didn't mind, we had lots of fun anyway. The dangles for guests were handed to us with all due ceremony. We want to thank Kevin and Olive Mavor in particular for their hospitality. They hosted the three of us and also drove us around Aberdeen. I have spend a wonderful week in Scotland and I'm sure that I will visit this country again.

Maybe in 2004 there will be more dancers from Germany.

Vom 12. bis 16.April 2002, bei Bedarf sogar bis 17.April 2002, fand in St.Andrews "Scotland's 1st International Square Dance Festival" statt. St.Andrews liegt an der Ostküste Schottlands und ist eigentlich mehr dem Golfsport verbunden als unserem Hobby, dem Square Dance. Der älteste Golfplatz der Welt (Old Course) und die älteste Universität Schottlands sind beide in St.Andrews zu finden. Es ist ein sehr schöner kleiner Ort, der eigentlich auch ohne Square Dance schon eine Reise wert ist.

Schottland hat 2 Square Dance Clubs, die Old Kirk Dancer in Cupar (ca.10 Meilen von St.Andrews) und die Kilt Kickers in Aberdeen. Diese beiden Clubs haben gemeinsam das Festival organisiert. Besonders Jan und Mal haben viel Zeit investiert, damit alles so toll ablief. Ich finde es schon mutig, wenn man eine Veranstaltung über 5-6 Tage plant und man genau weiß, dass über 80% der Gäste sich Urlaub und auch Quartier nehmen müssen. Aber die Idee war gut und der Erfolg der Veranstaltung hat dies auch bestätigt. Getanzt wurde im Madras College am Ortsrand in der Aula auf Parkettfußboden, was schon mal den Füßen gut tat. Freitagsabend ging es los mit MS und Plus im Wechsel, aber auch mit Paul und Thorsten im Wechsel. Paul Bristow aus England und Thorsten Geppert aus Deutschland sollten die nächsten Tage dafür sorgen, das wir Schottland so schnell nicht wieder vergessen, was sie auch taten. Die Begeisterung der Tänzer war so groß, dass der 17.04.02 noch angehangen wurde. Getanzt wurde täglich von 10.45 bis 22.45 Uhr natürlich mit einigen Pausen. Morgens wurde gearbeitet (Workshop) und abends "just for fun". In den größeren Pausen (am Nachmittag) schauten wir uns das ein oder andere in St.Andrews an oder zogen mit neu gewonnenen Square Dance Freunden durch den Ort, während Thorsten sein Golf-Handicap auf dem heiligen Rasen von St.Andrews verbesserte. Beim Grand March am Samstag traten die meisten Schotten in ihrer Landestracht auf, nämlich im Kilt. Beide Caller wurden zu Schotten und Thorsten trägt nun den Titel "Mac" Geppert. Es waren 160 Teilnehmer aus 7 Ländern anwesend, davon 15 aus Deutschland. Obwohl jetzt mancher sagen wird "was sind schon 160 Teilnehmer für ein Festival?" Klar, aber man bedenke, fast alle hatten eine weite Anreise und nicht jeder kann sich Urlaub für sein Hobby nehmen. Ich habe so viele neue und nette Square Dancer kennen gelernt, dass die Reise eine ewige Erinnerung bleibt. Die Gastfreundschaft und Hilfsbereitschaft der Schotten war riesig. 

Übernachtet wurde in Hotels, Pensionen, auf einem nahegelegenen Campingplatz, entweder mit eigenem Wohnmobil, oder angemieteten großzügigen "Chalets". Also für jeden Anspruch und Geldbeutel etwas Passendes.

Zum Schluss der Veranstaltung haben wir uns mit den Worten "See you in 2004" voneinander verabschiedet. Dann nämlich wird alles zum zweitenmal stattfinden mit den gleichen Callern und sicherlich mit den meisten gleichen Tänzern. 

Die letzten 2 Tage meines Aufenthaltes in Schottland habe ich mich mit Peter und Gabriele auf den Weg in die Highlands gemacht. Ich wollte doch wenigstens etwas von dem Land noch sehen. Schottland ist ein schönes Land und ich glaube jetzt, dass man den Urlaub nicht immer im Süden verbringen muss, zumal das Wetter gut war. Die Sonne schien fast täglich.

Natürlich darf ich nicht vergessen, den tollen Clubabend der Kilt-Kickers in Aberdeen am Donnerstag zu erwähnen. Da die 3 Club-Caller in St.Andrews blieben, mussten wir nach Tapes tanzen. Das machte aber nichts, wir hatten trotzdem viel Spaß. Die Gästedangle wurden uns feierlich überreicht. Besonderer Dank gilt auch Kevin und Olive Mavor für ihre Gastfreundschaft. Sie haben uns alle drei beherbergt und auch in Aberdeen chauffiert. Ich habe in Schottland eine tolle Woche verbracht und ich werde mit Sicherheit noch mal in dieses Land reisen. 

Vielleicht werden in 2004 doch einige Tänzer mehr aus Deutschland anreisen.
