By accident I recently came across a flyer, which announced the existence of a new club data base. I looked at it and was not thrilled. Apparently it made use (once again) of data taken from the Directory, including all the errors and outdated information (e.g. all clubs dance until midnight!). If then you add such comments as "Please note! We cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information.", then why bother? The point of the whole exercise escapes me. And I don't feel it is the gentlemanly thing to do to add such remarks as "I assume that the clubs (boards) have no objections to being listed in this compilation". If some dancers from a neighbouring club hadn't by chance been visiting a special dance some distance away, and hadn't brought us back this flyer, we would not know to this day that our consent to this listing had been taken for granted.

Indeed there are more such lists on the internet. More and more I am finding information that is two years or more out of date. I am of the opinion that we should publish our own club data on our own home page, and that we should notify EAASDC for a central compilation. Naturally clubs can arbitrarily add links to one or another homepage, but I fail to see why they should copy the contents, publish them themselves, and then fail to keep them up to date. I don't see that it is our obligation to share our data changes with all these webmasters (especially as we don't even know that they exist), or especially- as it would appear in this case  - that we should have to carry them out ourselves.

Durch Zufall bekam ich vor kurzem einen Flyer, der eine Clubdatenbank ankündigte. Ich habe mir das angeschaut und bin nicht begeistert. Es handelt sich anscheinend (wieder einmal!) um vom Directory übernommene Daten, allerdings ein uralter Stand und fehlerhaft (z.B. tanzen alle Clubs bis Mitternacht!). Wenn dann noch Kommentare wie "Achtung! Wir können keine Garantie auf Richtigkeit der Daten geben." aufgeführt sind, geht mir der Sinn so einer Aktion völlig ab. Auch Bemerkungen wie "Ich gehe davon aus, dass die Clubs (Boards) nichts dagegen haben, in dieser Zusammenstellung aufgeführt zu werden." finde ich nicht gerade die feine englische Art! Wenn nicht zufällig Tänzer eines befreundeten Clubs auf einem weit entfernten Special-Dance gewesen wären und uns nicht mit unserer Flyerpost zufällig auch diesen offen ausliegenden Flyer mitgebracht hätten, wüssten wir bis heute nicht, dass von unserer Zustimmung zu dem Listing ausgegangen wird.

Es gibt ja noch mehr solche Listen im Internet. Ich finde immer wieder mal welche, die Daten von vor 2 Jahren oder älter veröffentlichen. Ich stehe auf dem Standpunkt, dass wir unsere Clubdaten auf unserer eigenen Homepage veröffentlichen und für eine zentrale Zusammenstellung an die EAASDC melden. Natürlich können beliebig viele Clubs darauf oder auf unsere Homepage verlinken, aber ich sehe nicht ein, warum sie die Inhalte kopieren, bei sich veröffentlichen und sich dann meist nicht mehr um die Pflege kümmern. Ich sehe uns auch nicht in der Pflicht, all diesen Betreibern (sofern wir überhaupt von deren Existenz wissen!), unsere Datenänderungen mitzuteilen oder sie gar - wie in diesem Fall angedacht - selbst durchführen zu müssen.

I wasn't especially thrilled with this data base either. On one hand some of the data is out of date (some data is from 2001), and it can never be completely current: in each issue of the Directory Katharina deals with over 100 changes. On the other hand, strictly speaking, this is an unlawful use of the data and a contravention of the data protection act. The Directory may only be used, but not copied, especially not in electronic format. This also applies if the data is not copied directly from the Directory, but also from lists which have been compiled from it.

In the last few years I have had various questions about the Internet version of the Directory: why only the contact telephone numbers are listed, and not the names, and why the callers and cuers are not named.

According to the data protection act, we are not allowed to publish any personal data without first obtaining permission from those concerned. In response to a specific request, we have been strictly forbidden by ECTA from storing or publishing the names of their members in any electronic form. You might wonder about this, but you must respect the request.

Now if someone, without permission, simply publishes data, and writes underneath it "If anyone disagrees with the information, let me know, and I will delete the entry…", then that is not only "not the gentlemanly thing to do", as Anke writes, but a clear violation of legal regulations.

I have spoken with the president and webmaster of the club concerned. Naturally they did this in the belief that everything was correct, and they didn't see the problems. The critical data at least will be deleted.

To what extent it is useful to send data changes not only to the EAASDC Administrator Katharina, but also to other club homepage maintainers, each must decide for him or herself.

For sure there are other such collections of data. Whoever publishes such a list should be sure that the persons whose names are published therein have also given their permission in advance. That such lists exist elsewhere in the internet is no excuse: two wrongs don't make a right.

Auch ich war von dieser Datenbank nicht sonderlich begeistert. Zum einen ist sie teilweise veraltet (einige Daten waren auf dem Stand von Anfang 2001) und sie kann auch nie aktuell sein: Katharina arbeitet in jede Directory-Ausgabe über 100 Änderungsmitteilungen ein. Zum anderen liegt hier streng genommen eine unerlaubte Verwendung von Daten und ein Verstoß gegen die Datenschutzverordnung vor. Das Directory darf nur benutzt, aber nicht kopiert werden, schon gar nicht in elektronischer Form. Dies gilt natürlich auch dann, wenn die Daten nicht direkt aus dem Directory abgeschrieben werden, sondern von Listen, die andere daraus erstellt haben.

Ich habe in den letzten Jahren hin und wieder Anfragen erhalten, warum in der Internet-Version des Directory nur die Kontakt-Telefonnummern und keine Namen und auch keine Caller und Cuer aufgeführt sind.

Nach der Datenschutzverordnung dürfen keine persönlichen Daten ohne vorherige  Zustimmung des Betroffenen veröffentlicht werden. Nach einer entsprechenden Anfrage wurde uns aber von ECTA ausdrücklich untersagt, die Namen ihrer Mitglieder in elektronischen Verzeichnissen zu speichern und zu veröffentlichen. Man mag sich darüber wundern, aber man muss es respektieren.

Wenn nun jemand ohne nach Erlaubnis zu fragen einfach irgendwelche Daten veröffentlicht und darunter schreibt "Falls jemand nicht einverstanden ist, dann lasst es mich bitte wissen, ich werde dann umgehend die Einträge löschen …", dann ist das nicht nur "nicht grade die feine englische Art" wie Anke schrieb, sondern ein klarer Verstoß gegen gesetzliche Vorschriften.

Ich habe mit Präsidentin und Webmaster des betreffenden Clubs gesprochen. Natürlich hatte man in gutem Glauben, dass alles seine Richtigkeit habe, gehandelt und die Probleme nicht gesehen. Die kritischen Daten wurden zumindest teilweise gelöscht.

Inwieweit es sinnvoll ist, geänderte Clubdaten nicht nur an EAASDC-Administrator Katharina, sondern zusätzlich an einen oder mehrere Club-Homepage-Betreiber zu senden, muss jeder selbst entscheiden. 

Es gibt sicher noch weitere Datensammlungen. Wer solche Listen veröffentlicht, sollte sich vorher sicher sein, dass die Personen, deren Namen er in einem bestimmten Zusammenhang veröffentlicht, auch damit einverstanden sind. Dass solche Listen im Internet stehen, ist keine Entschuldigung: zweimal Falsch ergibt kein Richtig.
