"Crazy Taps"

This year, the clogging group of the "Beaux & Belles SDC e.V.", the CRAZY TAPS from Frankfurt will host the ECTA Clog Convention with the assistance of the Moonspinners Square Dance Club e.V. This is to take place in Dietzenbach near Frankfurt from July 18^th - 20^th 2003 . With this Convention, the Crazy Taps also celebrate their 15^th anniversary.

Back in 1986, a few dancers of the Beaux & Belles Square Dance Club came together to learn clogging under the direction of an American, Steve Shuler. Before that, there were only a few individual cloggers in Germany and therefore clogging was hardly known at all. Unfortunately, Steve Shuler and most of the dancers had to return to the USA about a year later. Alexandra Schell, who was left more or less on her own, kept on practising as much as she could and eventually held her own first beginners' class in 1988. Very soon after, this class got its first chance to present itself to the public. So, with their first appearance at the Winter Jamboree in St. Leon-Rot in 1988, the Crazy Taps were founded.

This very first appearance of the Crazy Taps was followed by various other events, that they either attended or hosted themselves, e.g. the "Crazy Clogging Festival". This Festival has already taken place three times, always supported by noted US-instructors. In 1998, the well-known and popular Jeff Driggs and the two groups "Rise & Shine Cloggers" and "Circle City Cloggers" came to visit the Crazy Taps. Both the dancers and their families (about 40 people) were accommodated privately. In exchange, they showed some absolutely super clogging.

In 1995 and 2000, the clogging group "Special Edition" from Georgia, USA , came to Germany to get to know the country and the people; and ended up being guests at the Crazy Clogging Festival as well. In return, some of the Crazy Taps visited the Georgia State Convention in Macon, USA, in 2002 and received a very warm and hospitable welcome there.

In the 15 years of their existence, the Crazy Taps have been involved in many events. Among other things, they repeatedly appeared at the Independence Day celebrations at the Wiesbaden Airfield. Also at the Autumn Jubilee, hosted by the Beaux & Belles, you can often admire them as well. For the 45^th anniversary of the Beaux & Belles, for example, they presented a choreography written to the music of the Jungle Book - but also Irish dance formations and choreographies to country music were exhibited. At Christmas parties, e.g. of the workers welfare association and other clubs, the dancers of the Crazy Taps have always been very welcome, too.

In 1989, Alexandra Schell handed the group over to her sister Dani, who still leads the group with the assistance of Anja Gottschalk. Today, the group consists of about 25 members aged from 21 up to 81 (!) years. Now the Crazy Taps look forward to hosting this year's ECTA Clog Convention and to a hopefully large number of participants. Besides, they hope for a large response for the crash course taking place on Saturday and Sunday where you can learn the most important basic clogging steps from scratch. Neither previous knowledge nor special shoes are required. All you need is flat shoes with a smooth sole (no sneakers).

In diesem Jahr ist die Clogging-Gruppe des "Beaux & Belles SDC e.V.", die CRAZY TAPS aus Frankfurt, Ausrichter der ECTA Clog Convention, die vom 18. - 20.07.03 mit Unterstützung des Square Dance Club Moonspinners e.V. in Dietzenbach bei Frankfurt stattfindet. Die
Crazy Taps feiern auf der Convention ihr 15jähriges Bestehen.

Im Jahre 1986 fanden sich unter der Leitung des Amerikaners Steve Shuler in Frankfurt ein paar Tänzer des Square Dance Clubs Beaux & Belles zusammen, die von ihm Clogging lernen wollten. Bis dahin wurde Clogging in Deutschland nur von einigen wenigen, einzelnen Tänzern getanzt und war fast völlig unbekannt. Leider mussten Steve Shuler und die meisten Tänzern schon ein Jahr später wieder in die USA zurück. Fast alleine zurück blieb Alexandra Schell, die fleißig weiterübte und 1988 einen eigenen Anfängerkurs durchführte. Dieser bekam schon bald die Chance, sich öffentlich zu präsentieren. So gründeten sich mit ihrem ersten Auftritt auf der Winter Jamboree 1988 in St. Leon-Rot die Crazy Taps.

Seit diesem ersten Auftritt haben die Crazy Taps sehr viele Veranstaltungen besucht und selbst ausgerichtet, z.B. das "Crazy Clogging Festival". Dieses fand schon drei Mal statt; immer unterstützt von namhaften Instruktoren aus den USA. 1998 waren der in den USA sehr bekannte und beliebte Jeff Driggs und die beiden Gruppen "Rise & Shine Cloggers" und die "Circle City Cloggers" bei den Crazy Taps zu Gast. Die Tänzer und ihre Familien (ca. 40 Personen) wurden privat untergebracht. Im Ausgleich dazu wurde unvergleichbares Clogging gezeigt.

In den Jahren 1995 und 2000 besuchte die Clogging-Gruppe "Special Edition" aus Georgia, USA, Deutschland und wollte gerne Land und Leute kennen lernen. So waren auch sie Gast des Crazy Clogging Festivals. Im Gegenzug besuchten Mitglieder der Crazy Taps im Jahr 2002 die Georgia State Convention in Macon, USA, und wurden dort gastfreundlich aufgenommen.

In den 15 Jahren ihres Bestehens wirkten die Crazy Taps bei vielen Vorführungen mit. U.a. sind sie schon wiederholt am 4. Juli beim großen Fest zum Unabhängigkeitstag auf dem Wiesbaden-Airfield aufgetreten. Auch am Autumn Jubilee der Beaux & Belles kann man sie oft bewundern. Zum 45-jährigen Bestehen der Beaux & Belles gab es beispielsweise eine Choreographie zur Musik des Dschungelbuchs - aber auch irische Formationstänze und Tänze zum Country Musik-Repertoire wurden schon dargeboten. Auch auf Weihnachtsfeiern, z.B. bei der Arbeiterwohlfahrt oder anderen Vereinen waren die Crazy Taps mit ihren Tänzen immer gern gesehene Gäste.

1989 gab Alexandra Schell die Gruppe an ihre Schwester Dani weiter, die die Crazy Taps bis heute zusammen mit Anja Gottschalk leitet. Zur Zeit bestehen die Crazy Taps aus ca. 25 Mitgliedern im Alter von 20 bis 81 (!) Jahren.

Nun freuen sich die Crazy Taps darauf, die diesjährige ECTA Clog Convention auszurichten und auf die hoffentlich zahlreichen Teilnehmer. Außerdem wünschen sie sich viele Interessenten für den Samstag und Sonntag stattfindenden Intensivkurs, in dem man die wichtigsten Clogging-Grundschritte erlernen kann. Man braucht dafür keine Vorkenntnisse und auch keine speziellen Schuhe. Flache Schuhe mit glatter Sohle (keine Turnschuhe) genügen.
