Swinging Beetles Wolfsburg e.V.

In April 2003, the Swinging Beetles Wolfsburg founded the first Square Dance Club in Wolfsburg. At the moment, the club has 26 members. But there has been regular square dancing in Wolfsburg since 1997. Back then, a caller from the neighbouring town of Brunswick held a class at the Health and Leisure Centre in Wolfsburg, and in April 1999 fifteen dancers were graduated. They danced together every Monday until the end of January 2002, albeit without any formal club recognition. During this time they were able to hold two more successful classes.

Due to some friction between the caller and the club members, which unfortunately could not be resolved, the caller terminated his affiliation with the Swinging Beetles in January 2003. But the Swinging Beetles were determined to stay together, and agreed upon the formal founding of the club and entry into the umbrella association, which had not been possible before. The club was both pleased and thankful to find a caller from another area, who straight away pitched in and thereby ensured the continuity of the club. We already have another class underway.

As a club the Swinging Beetles want to earn recognition in Wolfsburg, and foster the convivial atmosphere of square dancing as a sport. For this reason we have already held several demos and public dances. We have especially enjoyed the many guests who have visited our club evenings since we joined EAASDC.

A quick word about our name. It was very important to us to show our connexion to the town, and especially to the Volkswagen factory, so we deliberately, and with official approval, settled on the name of the VW Bug. We are really happy that for the Swinging Beetles such an emotional year was able to come to such a satisfactory and successful ending.

Die Swinging Beetles Wolfsburg e.V. haben im April 2003 den ersten Wolfsburger Square Dance Verein gegründet. Zur Zeit hat der Club 26 Mitglieder.Square Dance wird in Wolfsburg allerdings schon regelmäßig seit 1997 getanzt. Damals hatte ein Caller aus der Nachbarstadt Braunschweig einen Kurs über ein Gesundheits- und Freizeitzentrum in Wolfsburg angeboten und 15 Tänzer/innen konnten im April 1999 graduiert werden. Als loser Zusammenschluß wurde anschließend bis Januar 2002 immer montags getanzt. Zwei weitere Classes konnten in der Zeit zum Abschluss gebracht werden.

Aufgrund verschiedener Unstimmigkeiten zwischen dem damaligen Caller und den Clubmitgliedern, die leider nicht ausgeräumt werden konnten, kündigte der Caller im Januar 2003 die Zusammenarbeit mit den Swinging Beetles auf. Die Swinging Beetles zeigten jedoch starken Zusammenhalt, beschlossen die Vereinsgründung und den Beitritt in den Dachverband, was vorher nicht möglich war. Erfreulicher- und dankenswerterweise fand der Club andere Caller aus der Region, die kurzfristig einsprangen und den Fortbestand des Clubs damit sicherten. Zur Zeit läuft bereits wieder eine Class.

Als Verein wollen sich die Swinging Beetles in Wolfsburg bekanntmachen und den geselligen Square Dance als Tanzsport fördern. Dazu hat es in diesem Jahr schon einige Auftritte und öffentliche Veranstaltungen gegeben. Besonders freuen wir uns über die vielen Gäste, die seit der Mitgliedschaft im Dachverband uns an unseren Clubabenden besuchen.

Noch ein Wort zum Namen. Uns war wichtig, die Verbundenheit mit der Stadt und besonders auch dem Volkswagenwerk zu zeigen, so dass wir bewusst und mit Genehmigung den Namen Beetles in Anlehnung an den VW Käfer gewählt haben. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass für die Swinging Beetles bewegte Jahr so zufriedenstellend und erfolgreich abschließen zu können.
