Square Dance Club in "Bayrischer Wald" (Bavarian Forest)

After coming back from our trip to America in Summer 2003, we two globetrotters, Inge-Lore Hagemann and Heinz Kaikl, subsequently managed our move from the metropolis of Munich to the beautiful "Bayrischer Wald" with the help of many Square Dance friends.

The first contacts to the nice "Wood People" were quickly made and the Square Dance hobby was placed in the foreground again.

We were surprised how little was known about Square Dance in this region and how big the interest was to learn more about this hobby. Of course we informed objectively about this American dance type, about the roots, the world wide standardised moves, the friendship, the sociability and the sporting aspect. How much fun and enjoyment this hobby brings, one could see by our faces!

People were also quite amazed by the fact that we didn't spare any trouble to get to the club night of the "Munich Swinging Bells" just to dance with our Square Dance friends.

Since in this region there was no Square Dance available and the closest clubs are some 60 km away - through hilly country - and because of the great interest in Square Dance in our district of Geiersthal, we decided to found a Square Dance Dance Club in Fernsdorf.

Our mayor, Mr. Fleischmann, was filled with enthusiasm by this idea and after the next meeting of the municipal council, he was able to make available the youth center in Fernsdorf as our dance place.

By that, the white spot in the "Bayrische Wald", was also filled with Square Dance.

As clubname in the district of Geiersthal, the English translation "Vulture Valley SDC" was a natural choice, whereby the village will get known within the Square Dance community and we can support the tourism. The beautiful area, the many tramping tracks, the inexpensive room rates and the good cooking anyhow invite to stay.

Our Square Dance demonstrations with the "Munich Swinging Bells" in the youth center inspired the visitors from the surrounding villages. Flyer and the local press acquired more interested people. Sunday afternoon was chosen as the desired date.

And so our cheerful group now meets with thirteen students eager to learn from 5 to 7 p.m. in the youth center Fernsdorf, Dorfstraße 1 directly at the bus stop, entrance of the village at the B85 between Viechtach and Regen.

Well known tour destinations close to us are amongst others the Joska Crystal Adventure World in Bodenmais, The Silberberg with it's attractions, the idyllic Arber Lake, the gondola to the 1456 m high Arber, the Museum of local railways in Bayrisch Eisenstein and the Natural Memorial "Der Pfahl". Further, a walk to the old Nussburg castle with a magnificent view in peaceful silence can be made before concluding the day with Square Dance.

It is our principle not to head hunt dancers from other clubs; we built the club with students who are going to be the base of the club after their graduation. However, if graduated dancers want to become members, they are very welcome to join as club members.

With the energetic assistance of the "Munich Swinging Bells" we are sure that we can make it from a subscriber to a regular club, and then, after two more Open Houses on September 12^th and 19^th we plan to get into the normal rhythm and start with a new class in October.

Visits by graduated dancers from other clubs as guest are of course very welcome at any time. If, at some time, a complete Square of Mainstream dancers make their appearance, our Club Caller Brown Bear Heinz will be delighted to call one or the other club tip as well. Square Dance Club im Bayerischen Wald

Zurück von unserer Amerika Reise im Sommer 2003, war anschließend dank vieler hilfreicher Square Dance Freunde, auch der private Umzug von uns zwei Weltenbummlern, Inge-Lore Hagemann und Heinz Kaikl, aus der Weltstadt München in den schönen Bayerischen Wald geschafft.

Die ersten Kontakte zu den netten "Woidlern" waren schnell geknüpft und das Hobby Square Dance stand bei uns wieder im Vordergrund.

Wir waren überrascht, wie wenig in dieser Region über Square Dance bekannt war und wie groß doch das Interesse war, mehr über dieses Hobby zu erfahren. Natürlich informierten wir sachlich über diese amerikanische Tanzart, ihre Entstehung, die weltweite standardisierten Tanzfiguren, die Freundschaft, die Geselligkeit und den sportlichen Aspekt. Wie viel Spaß und Freude dieses gemeinsame Tanzen bereitet, konnte man uns an den Augen ablesen!

Auch die Tatsache, dass wir 160 km Anfahrt zum Clubabend der "Munich Swinging Bells" nicht scheuten, um mit unseren Square Dance Freunden zu tanzen, versetzte ins Staunen.

Da hier vor Ort keine Square Dance Möglichkeit bestand und die nächsten Clubs ca. 60 km - durch hügeliges Gelände - entfernt sind, beschlossen wir auf Grund des großen Interesses an Square Dance in unserer Gemeinde Geiersthal, im Ortsteil Fernsdorf einen Square Dance Club zu gründen.

Unser Bürgermeister, Herr Fleischmann, war von unserer Idee begeistert und nach der nächsten Gemeinderatssitzung konnte er uns das Jugendheim in Fernsdorf als Tanzplatz zur Verfügung stellen.

Damit füllt sich auch dieser weiße Fleck im Bayerischen Wald mit Square Dance.

Als Clubname in der Gemeinde Geiersthal bot sich natürlich die englische Übersetzung "Vulture Valley SDC" an, wodurch die Gemeinde in Square Dance Kreisen noch bekannter würde und wir damit zum Fremdenverkehr beitragen könnten. Die schöne Gegend, die vielen Wanderwege, die zivilen Zimmerpreise und die gute Küche laden ohnehin schon zum Verweilen ein.

Unsere Square Dance Vorführungen mit den "Munich Swinging Bells" im Jugendheim begeisterten die Besucher auch aus den umliegenden Gemeinden. Flyer und die örtliche Presse brachten weitere Interessenten. Der Sonntag Nachmittag kristallisierte sich als Wunschtermin heraus.

Und so treffen wir uns jetzt mit "dreizehn" lernfreudigen Student's von 17 bis 19 Uhr in fröhlicher Runde im Jugendheim Fernsdorf, Dorfstraße 1, direkt an der Bushaltestelle, Ortseingang, an der B85 zwischen Viechtach und Regen.

Bekannte Ausflugsziele in unserer Nähe sind u.a. die Joska Kristall Erlebniswelt in Bodenmais, der Silberberg mit seinen Attraktionen, der idyllische Arbersee, eine Gondelfahrt auf den 1456 m hohen Arber, das Lokalbahn Museum in Bayerisch Eisenstein und das Naturdenkmal "Der Pfahl". Weiter bietet sich ein Spaziergang zur Alten Nussburg an, - mit herrlichem Rundblick in friedlicher Ruhe - um dann den Tag mit Square Dance abzuschließen.

Es ist unser Prinzip keine Tänzer aus anderen Clubs abzuwerben, wir bauen den Club mit Students auf, die dann nach Ihrer Graduation den Kern des Clubs bilden können. Sollten uns allerdings graduierte Tänzer auf eine Mitgliedschaft ansprechen, so sind sie uns als Clubmitglieder gerne willkommen.

Durch die tatkräftige Unterstützung seitens der "Munich Swinging Bells" sind wir sicher, im Herbst den Sprung vom Subscriber zum regulären Club zu schaffen, um dann auch nach zwei Open Houses am 12. und 19. September, mit einer neuer Class ab Oktober im normalen Rhythmus beginnen zu können.

Besuche von graduierten Tänzern aus anderen Clubs sind bei uns als Gäste natürlich jederzeit herzlich gerne gesehen. Wenn sich einmal ein kompletter Square von MS Tänzern bei uns einfindet, so ist unser Club Caller Brown Bear Heinz gerne bereit, den einen oder anderen Clubtipp zu callen. Bitte vorher anmelden.
