GSI World SD Festival, 16. bis 18. Juli 2004 in Dachau

Made it! Almost a year of organization for the GSI Caller School (11.-15.7.) and the GSI World SD Festival (16.-18.07.2004) now lies behind us.

Shortly before the event it was as usual a little bit stressful and everybody was nervous: how many guests will be coming, are there enough ribbons? Is everything arranged and have we thought of everything? What will the weather be like? But thank goodness, we didn't suffer any big catastrophes this time either!

The program for a Caller School is extensive and you really have to work hard if you want to cover all sections in the allowed time. More than 80 participants at the Caller School were working really hard and the eight Caller coaches worked together excellently. The school ended on Thursday at 9:30 p.m. with a whole hour of applause. As a result, we think that the participants took a lot of positive memories back home and that they enjoyed it.

What we like...

With about 1.100 guests, the festival was a full success and we are proud of the large amount of positive feedback that has reached us. The number of guests suited the Dachau halls perfectly; and as we had sunny (almost too sunny) weather the dancers were able to spend time outside and also to enjoy the nice town of Dachau.

Each Caller mobilized their last energy after the strenuous week of Caller School and performed a fantastic show at the Festival. Everybody who experienced the nine Callers performing together on stage with perfectly harmonizing voices will not forget it for a long time.

A big ‘Thank you' to all the helpers recruited from over 15 Clubs in Munich. We were only able to carry out the Special with your help! Every one of them worked hard for a T-Shirt and free entrance, simply because it was fun to see just what can be done by a highly motivated team.

And also ‘Thank you' to all the dancers who decided to visit Dachau and the GSI-Festival! Thank you for the great atmosphere and your stamina on the three days which may well have been the hottest in the summer of 2004. Correspondingly, perspiration was included in the entrance fee! We certainly had a lot of fun organizing the Festival for you!

... and what we didn't like so much

But there are of course a couple of things we didn't like so much as well … so we ask ourselves: Will it help by telling you? We want to try!

Everybody, who has already organized and carried out a Special, is familiar with this... The negotiations with the host who runs the Halls. Of course you try to achieve the best prices for the dancers by telling him the expected large number of guests and the correspondingly high turnover for him - which we did, too. Our host is used to handling SD events because this wasn't the first one to be held in Dachau. But looking back we have to say that we (or you) have endangered the host's good opinion of Square Dancers: 150 beer glasses are missing, nine persons ordered a meal in the restaurant but had disappeared when it came and the food had to be thrown away. Despite having some 1.100 dancers, only 120 meals were ordered at each Afterparty, and the people sleeping in the hall even borrowed plates and cutlery from the host for the breakfasts they had brought with them and for which they had even bought "fresh rolls" from the host!!! And we don't really want to go into detail about the drinks which were even carried into the halls in crates.

It goes without saying that self-catering is necessary and not at all a problem when the halls do not provide food. But as soon as food is provided it should be clear that you are not allowed to bring along your own food and drink. No one will accuse you if only a few dancers do it and if they do it discretely. But we had to get rid of four huge bags of garbage after every Afterparty (containing empty bottles and food packagings)!

This time we were lucky to be able to wangle the host's understanding and confidence in the end but we would like to appeal to you - this kind of behavior is not acceptable and we will must forbid it categorically at future events. Obviously this is not only a rule for the GSI-Festival but for every event in the Dachau halls (and it should be a matter of course that this behavior is not acceptable in any hall with food provided).

For everybody who is already looking forward to the next GSI-Festival: according to the planning stage there will be a GSI-Festival in Dachau again in July 2006 and the organization team of Munich is hoping that we will see you all there again! For July 2005, GSI is planning a free GSI-Caller School and a GSI-Festival in Gothenberg (Sweden).

Geschafft! Hinter uns liegt ein knappes Jahr an Vorbereitungen für die GSI Callerschool (11.-15.07.) und das GSI World SD Festival (16.-18.07.2004).

Wie immer war es kurz vor der Veranstaltung ein bisschen stressig und die Nerven lagen blank: Wie viele Gäste werden kommen, sind genug Ribbons da? Ist alles vorbereitet und haben wir an alles gedacht? Was sagt die Wettervorhersage? Gott sei Dank: Große Katastrophen sind uns auch diesmal erspart geblieben!

Das Programm für eine Callerschool ist sehr umfangreich und verlangt intensives Arbeiten, wenn man alle Kapitel innerhalb der vorgegebenen Zeit abdecken will. Die über 80 Teilnehmer an der Callerschool waren daher eifrig bei der Arbeit und die 8 Callercoaches ergänzten sich wunderbar. Die School endete am Donnerstag um 21.30 Uhr mit einer Stunde Klatschen. Daher gehen wir davon aus, dass die Teilnehmer viele positive Erinnerungen mit nach Hause nehmen und es ihnen gefallen hat.

Was uns gefallen hat...

Das Festival war mit knapp 1.100 Besuchern ein voller Erfolg und das zahlreiche, positive Feedback, das uns erreicht hat, fanden wir wunderbar. Für die Dachauer Hallen ist diese Besucherzahl optimal. Und da wir schönes (fast zu schönes) Wetter hatten, konnten sich die Tänzer auch im Freien aufhalten und die schöne Stadt Dachau genießen.

Die Caller haben nach einer anstrengenden Woche Callerschool noch mal alle Reserven mobilisiert und eine tolle Show beim Festival gezeigt. Wer miterleben durfte, wie gut die Stimmen harmonierten, wenn alle neun Caller gemeinsam auf der Bühne standen, wird das lange nicht vergessen.

Ein großes Dankeschön an alle Helfer, die wir aus über 15 Münchner Clubs rekrutierten. Nur durch euch konnten wir das Special überhaupt durchführen. Jeder hat für ein T-Shirt und freien Eintritt gearbeitet, einfach weil es Spaß macht zu sehen, was mit einem motivierten Team bewegt werden kann.

Und auch Danke an die Tänzer, die sich für Dachau und das GSI-Festival entschieden haben! Danke für eure gute Stimmung und euer Durchhaltevermögen an drei Tagen, die vielleicht als die heißesten des Sommers 2004 in die Geschichte eingehen. Denn das Schwitzen war im Preis inbegriffen! Uns hat es großen Spaß gemacht, das Festival für euch zu organisieren!

...und was uns nicht gefallen hat

Natürlich gibt es aber auch ein paar Sachen die uns nicht so gut gefallen haben… für uns stellt sich die Frage: Hilft es, wenn wir es euch sagen? Wir wollen es versuchen!

Jeder, der schon ein Special organisiert und durchgeführt hat, kennt das… Die Verhandlungen mit dem Wirt, der das Hausrecht in den Hallen hat. Natürlich versucht man, die besten Preise für die Tänzer rauszuholen und lockt den Wirt mit einer großen zu erwartenden Besucherzahl und daraus folgend mit einem hohen Umsatz. Auch wir haben das getan; unser Wirt ist erfahren im Umgang mit SD-Veranstaltungen, denn es war ja nicht die erste, die in Dachau stattfand. Leider müssen wir rückblickend sagen, dass wir (oder ihr) es uns diesmal fast mit dem Wirt verscherzt haben: Es fehlen 150 Weißbiergläser, 9 Personen haben im Lokal Essen bestellt und als es geliefert wurde, waren sie verschwunden und das Essen musste weggeworfen werden. Bei fast 1.100 Tänzern haben wir pro Abend nur 120 Afterparty-Essen ausgegeben und die Hallenschläfer haben sich beim Wirt sogar noch Besteck und Teller für das selbst mitgebrachte Frühstück ausgeliehen, für das dem Wirt doch tatsächlich auch noch "frische Semmeln" abgekauft wurden!!! Die Getränke, die sogar in Kisten in die Hallen getragen wurden, wollen wir gar nicht näher erläutern.

Die Selbstversorgung ist natürlich notwendig und auch überhaupt kein Problem, wenn die Hallen unbewirtschaftet sind. Sobald aber eine Halle bewirtschaftet wird, dürfen keine eigenen Speisen und Getränke mitgebracht werden! Niemand sagt etwas, wenn das in kleinem Rahmen geschieht und die Tänzer diskret damit umgehen. Wir aber haben nach jeder Afterparty 4 Müllsäcke mit leeren Flaschen und Essensverpackungen weggetragen!

Bitte habt Verständnis, dass wir es für diesmal mit unserem Wirt zwar wieder hingebogen haben. Künftig werden wir dieses Verhalten aber konsequent unterbinden müssen. Und das gilt nicht nur für das GSI-Festival, sondern für alle künftigen SD-Veranstaltungen in den Dachauer Hallen (und sollte eigentlich ja in allen bewirtschafteten Hallen selbstverständlich sein).

Für alle, die sich schon auf das nächste GSI-Festival freuen: Nach den derzeitigen Planungen steht im Juli 2006 wieder ein GSI-Festival in Dachau auf dem Programm und das Münchner Organisationsteam hofft, dass wir euch alle wieder sehen! Für Juli 2005 ist seitens GSI geplant, die kostenlose GSI-Callerschool und auch ein GSI-Festival in Göteborg (Schweden) durchzuführen.
