Squaredance-Newsletter

It’s been some time since I published the

Squaredance Newsletter, which came as a

result of the questionnaire “Flyers on the

Internet”. As it’s been a while, and the

new year is a good incentive, I would like

to bring you up to date a little on the

status of the newsletter.

First of all I want to emphasise to every-

one that this service is absolutely free!

Everyone can subscribe to this newsletter

and contribute articles for publication.

We started out with 374 readers of the

first edition. In the meantime, the num-

ber of subscribers has increased to 428.

That indicates to me that we have the

right approach. And I’m pleased that this

service has been so well received. It is

very simple to subscribe to the Newslet-

ter. All you have to do is go to the

EAASDC homepage, and click on the

link you will find there.

As the newsletter is still in the experi-

mental stage, we are using as our server a

free newsletter provider. This is the rea-

son you will see some advertising, but

from my point of view I think it’s accept-

able. On this system the newsletter can

be found by a search machine. The news-

letter is advertised under the by-line

“sport – other”, with the following text,

which gives a fuller explanation of the

idea behind the newsletter: “the aim of

the Squaredance newsletter is to provide

additional information every now and

then which, for example, is not available

in the EAASDC calendar, such as the

relocation of a club evening. The news-

letter also provides the opportunity to

advertise all kinds of events which are on

a club calendar. These could include club

rambles, barbeques, flea markets for

Seit einiger Zeit versende ich den Square-

dance-Newsletter, der aus der Umfrage

„Flyer im Internet“ hervorgegangen ist. Da

diese Aktivität nun schon eine Weile läuft

und das neue Jahr ein guter Anlass ist,

möchte ich Euch ein wenig über den Status

des Newsletters informieren.

Zu allererst möchte ich aber noch einmal

herausstellen: dieser Service ist kostenlos!

Jeder kann den Newsletter abonnieren und

Beiträge zur Veröffentlichung einreichen.

Wir starteten die erste Ausgabe mit 374 Le-

sern. Inzwischen hat sich die Anzahl der

Abonnenten auf 428 erhöht. Das zeigt aus

meiner Sicht, dass der Ansatz richtig ist.

Und es freut mich, dass der Service so gut

angenommen wird. Der Newsletter kann

einfach abonniert werden, man muss nur

auf die Homepage der EAASDC gehen

und unten links den Link anklicken.

Da wir den Newsletter als Experiment

durchführen läuft das System auf dem Ser-

ver eines kostenfreien Newsletterproviders.

Dies bedingt auch einige Zeilen Werbung,

die aber aus meiner Sicht zu verschmerzen

sind. Auf diesem System kann der Newslet-

ter auch über Suchmaschinen gefunden

werden. Beworben wird der Newsletter dort

auch unter der Rubrik „Sport – Sonstiges“

mit dem folgenden Text, der die Idee des

Newsletters widergibt: „Das Ziel des

Squaredance Newsletters ist, in Abständen

ergänzende Informationen mitzugeben die

beispielsweise nicht im EAASDC-Kalender

stehen, wie Verlegungen des Klubabends.

Auch soll er die Möglichkeit geben, Veran-

staltungen aller Art zu bewerben, die mit

dem Klubgeschehen zusammenhängen. Das

können Klubwanderungen, Grillfeste, SD-

Kleider-Flohmärkte, Banner-Return-Events

oder eine beliebige andere Aktivität sein.

square dance clothes, trips to return ban-

ners, or any other similar activities. The

newsletter appears once a month, or

every two weeks. That depends on how

many new articles are received. The

newsletter is in text format, and contains

links to the flyer or homepage of the

event. You can access the newsletter on

the Internet at http://www.eaasdc.eu/

newsletter. There you can also subscribe

to the newsletter.”

As you can see, the newsletter has a

whole variety of uses. So you should

never be prevented from publishing regu-

lar information about your club activities.

To date several clubs have taken the op-

portunity to make use of this option. In

particular the short turnaround time of

normally two weeks makes this medium

interesting. With the newsletter you can

react spontaneously to events as they oc-

cur. And right away, if for example a fun

caller announces that he will be visiting

you, the newsletter is the perfect link to

the information on your club homepage!

From what I see so far, there have been

no technical problems. The input mask is

built so that all popular browsers can ac-

cess it. The newsletter e-mails are kept in

simple text-only format. This keeps the

load light and increases the capacity of

the mailbox. And so far I’ve also not

heard of any problems receiving and

reading email.

Now and then it happens that a receiver’s

mailbox is too full, and then the newslet-

ter bounces. As this will also affect other

mail, it helps to read your mail regularly.

But that is something that only affects me

as Newsmaster.

Naturally, the sending of information

also has repercussions on the club. We

had submitted a few articles from the

Ihr seht, der Newsletter kann für viele Ge-

legenheiten genutzt werden. Also lasst Euch

nicht abhalten, regelmäßig Informationen

zu den Aktivitäten Eures Klubs zu ver-

öffentlichen.

Bislang haben schon einige Klubs von die-

ser Möglichkeit Gebrauch gemacht. Gerade

die kurzen Erscheinungsintervalle von in

der Regel zwei Wochen machen das Medi-

um interessant. So kann mit dem Newsletter

spontan auf Ereignisse reagiert werden.

Und gerade, wenn beispielsweise spontan

ein toller Caller auf der Reise sein Kommen

ankündigt, ist der Newsletter die perfekte

Ergänzung zum Hinweis auf der Klub-

homepage!

Aus meiner Sicht gab es bislang auch keine

technischen Probleme. Die Eingabemasken

sind so aufgebaut, dass sie mit allen gängi-

gen Browsern bedient werden können. Die

E-Mails des Newsletters werden in schlan-

kem Nur-Text-Format gehalten. Dadurch

wird wenig Last erzeugt und die Kapazität

der Mailbox geschont. Bisher wurden mir

auch noch keine Probleme beim Empfang

und dem Lesen der Mails mitgeteilt.

Ab und an kommt es vor, dass eine Emp-

fänger-Mailbox zu voll ist und der Newslet-

ter abgewiesen wird. Da das auch noch an-

dere Mails betrifft, hilft es, die Boxen re-

gelmäßig zu leeren. Aber das ist etwas, das

nur mir als Newsmaster auffällt.

Natürlich hat das Versenden von Informati-

onen auch auf den Klub Auswirkungen.

Lovely Caotics. It was noticeable that

some of our guests spoke very positively

about the information in the newsletter,

and that this was the only way they had

learned of our special events. Also we

noticed that hits to our internet site in-

creased by about 50% and there is evi-

dence that our hits per week are now into

four digits.

These are the kind of results we wanted

to achieve with the newsletter. Current

information on club happenings, better

flow of information between Square-

dancers, and a good addition to the Bulle-

tin, paper flyers, and club homepages.

Wir hatten von den Lovely Caotics schon

einige Beiträge versandt. Zu bemerken war,

dass einige unserer Gäste uns auf den Hin-

weis im Newsletter positiv ansprachen und

nur deshalb von der Veranstaltung wussten.

Auch hat sich der Zugriff auf unseren In-

ternetauftritt um etwa 50% erhöht und

weist nun gute vierstellige Zugriffszahlen

pro Woche auf.

Diese Effekte sind es auch, die wir mit dem

Newsletter erreichen wollen. Aktuelle In-

formationen zum Klubgeschehen, besseren

Informationsfluss unter den Squaredancern

und eine gute Ergänzung zu Bulletin,

Papierflyern und Klubhomepages!
