Stamps
The claim that „The world’s first Square
Dance stamp” was recently published
(EAASDC Bulletin March 2005) cannot
be left to stand like that. No matter what
the background for this so-called “first” is,
the fact is – to my knowledge – that the
first stamp showing a Square Dance cou-
ple (without being declared as such) was
published in April 1978 as part of the se-
ries “USA Dance (Michel 1335 - 1338) on
a 13 cent stamp of the US mail. This
stamp was part of a set of four called
“USA Folk Dance”). Of course, besides
the First Day Stamp (26 April 1978) there
was a First Day Cover of the US monthly
magazine “Square Dancing”. The other
three stamps in the set are dedicated to
ballet, theatre and modern dancing. So, at
the most, the world’s “first” stamp as
mentioned in the article is in fact the “sec-
ond”. Additionally, it must be noted that
in March 1981 the German Bundespost
published two European Special stamps
on “Folklore” (Folk) (Michel 1096 - 1097).
The stamps show dancing couples from
the Black Forest and from Frisia but no
Square Dance couples.
Special postmarks
Square Dance is documented by special
postmarks on a larger scale. As far as I
know these are in chronological order:

Briefmarken
Die Behauptung „Die erste Square Dance-
Briefmarke der Welt“ sei kürzlich erschie-
nen (EAASDC Bulletin Mar 2005) kann so
nicht aufrecht erhalten bleiben. Egal, was
die Hintergründe für diese sogenannte
„erste“ sind, Tatsache ist, dass – soweit mir
bekannt – die erste Briefmarke, auf der ein
Square Dance-Paar (ohne als solches be-
nannt zu sein) auf einer 13-cents Marke
der US-Post (aus einem Viererblock, „USA
Folk Dance“) im April 1978 in der Serie
„USA Dance“ (Michel 1335-1338) erschie-
nen ist. Natürlich gab es neben dem Erst-
tagsstempel (26.4.1978) einen privaten
ETB (Ersttagsbrief, First Day Cover) von
der US-Monats-Zeitschrift „Square Dan-
cing“. Die drei anderen Marken des Blocks
sind dem Ballet-, Theater-, und dem Mo-
dern Dance gewidmet. Die im Artikel er-
wähnte „erste“ der Welt ist in Wirklichkeit
also allenfalls die „zweite“. Ergänzend sei
vermerkt: Am 7. März 1981 gab die Deut-
sche Bundespost zwei Europa-Sonder-
marken „Folklore“ (Michel 1096 -1097)
heraus. Sie zeigen Schwarzwälder und frie-
sische Tanzpaare, aber keine Square
Dance-Tanzpaare.
Sonderstempel
Square Dance ist in etwas größerem Maße
durch Sonderstempel dokumentiert. In
chronologischer Reihenfolge sind mir be-
