Top Meeting of Square Dance/Gipfeltreffen der Squaredancer

One of the most interesting Specials I

have experienced was on the Zugspitze

(Garmisch-Partenkirchen/Grainau). „We

are going to dance on top of the Zug-

spitze!“- „impossible!“- „would not

work!“- „you can’t do that!“– „No one

will come!“– „why?“– „too expensive!“-

„thin air!“- „too high!“- „not enough

room!“- „too dangerous!“- „too cold

(snow)!“- „you’re crazy!!!“ Such words

were heard from the people around me.

„Impossible“ is an unknown word for

square dancers. That was shown by the

„Zugspitz-Promenaders“ on June 18th as

they staged their club’s 5th Jubilee. The

Samstag auf der Zugspitze !“- „unmöglich!“

- „geht doch nicht !“- „kann man nicht !“-

„da kommt doch keiner !“- „warum ?“-„zu

teuer !“- „die dünne Luft !“- „zu hoch !“-

„wenig Platz“- „zu gefährlich !“- „zu kalt

(Schnee) !“- „Ihr seid ja verrückt !!!“

Solche Sätze hörte ich in meinem Bekann-

tenkreis. „geht nicht“ gibt es nicht bei

Squaredancern. Dies bewiesen die „Zug-

spitz-Promenaders“ am 18. Juni 2005 mit

der Durchführung ihres 5-jährigen Clubge-

burtstages. Das „höchste Square-Special“

highest special was held on the Zugspitze,

2962m high, with 185 dancers, the Zug-

spitz-Promenader-Band, Alphorn players

and the lady-caller Roma Liebe romped

about on Germany highest mountain.

Up with rack and pinion railway

Lutz, Gaby, Jutta and I met at the Eibsee-

cable-railway-station to get the tickets.

Then up we went with our outsized petti-

coat-bags. Long faces: fog, drizzle, wind,

cold! Warm clothes were put on. „Up

there it will be better, let’s hope? Doubt-

ing faces. Then, at the entrance, the con-

ductor asked: „are you afraid there will be

no food at the top?“ The many, stuffed-

full large bags were enormous to him. I

showed him my petticoat and explained

to him what was going on. With big eyes

he apologised „I did not know about that

and I am truly sorry that I can’t come to

watch you“.

After 45 minutes of rack and pinion rail-

way and 15 minutes cable car we arrived

at the top. The fog disappeared and the

sun welcomed us! All around glistening

new snow! Quickly we took off our

scarves, caps, jackets and pullovers –

away with them! Sun cream rubbed in

and relax!

The dance began

At 15:00h the dance began in the fully

glazed panorama hall, which is right un-

der the summit cross. Roma gave us lots

of fun with wonderful songs (oldies) and

interesting calls. During a promenade I

saw two climbers struggling down from

the summit cross. Should I knock on the

window and invite them to dance with

us? They would achieve their aim much

faster (home position) and would have a

lot more fun into the bargain.

At 18:00h the glacier restaurant, at a

185 Tänzer und Tänzerinnen, die Zugspitz-

Promenader-Band sowie Alphornbläser und

die Club-Callerin Roma Liebe tummelten

sich auf Deutschlands höchstem Berg.

Aufwärts per Zahnradbahn

Lutz, Gabi, Jutta und ich trafen uns an der

Eibsee-Seilbahn, um die Tickets in Empfang

zu nehmen. Dann ging´s mit großen Petty-

coat-Taschen zur Talstation der Zahnrad-

bahn. Lange Gesichter: Nebel, Nieselregen,

Wind, Kälte ! Warm anziehen war angesagt.

„Oben wird´s besser, wetten ?“ Zweifelnde

Blicke. Endlich am Eingang, fragte ein

Bahnbeamter: „Habt ihr Angst, ihr be-

kommt oben nicht genug zu essen ?“ Die

vielen voll gestopften Taschen waren ihm

nicht geheuer ! Ich zeigte meinen Pettycoat

und erklärte ihm, was Sache ist. Mit großen

Augen bedauerte er: „Davon wusste ich

nichts. Schade, dass ich nicht zuschauen

kann.“

Nach einer ¾ Std mit der Zahnradbahn und

¼ Std Seilbahnfahrt oben angekommen lös-

te sich der Nebel auf; die Sonne begrüßte

uns ! Rundum glänzte Neuschnee. Schnell

entblätterten wir uns: Schal, Mütze, Jacke,

Pullover, weg damit. Eincremen und

relaxen !

Der Tanz beginnt

Um 15 Uhr wurde im gläsernen Panorama-

saal – direkt unter dem Gipfelkreuz – der

Tanz eröffnet. Roma bereitete uns mit

schönen Songs (Oldies) und interessanten

Calls viel Spaß. Während einer Promenade

sah ich plötzlich zwei Bergsteiger, die müh-

sam einen Felsen hinabkletterten. Sollte ich

ans Fenster klopfen und sie einladen mit

uns zu tanzen ? Sie wären viel schneller am

Ziel (Home Position) und hätten dabei noch

Spaß.

Ab 18 Uhr wartete im Gletscher-Restaurant

fet. After that, the Zugspitz-Promenader-

Band warmed us up with hot rhythms

until 22:30h. Meanwhile the soles of my

dancing shoes became slippery; brushing

them didn’t help. So I danced the last tips

wearing my thermal boots. Now I under-

stand the saying: „let’s put hot soles on

the floor!“

Rhythmen. Mittlerweile waren die Sohlen

meiner Tanzschuhe glatt geworden; aufrau-

en half nichts. Also tanzte ich die letzten

Squares in Thermo-Stiefeln ! Jetzt verstand

ich das Sprichwort: „… legen wir eine heiße

Sohle auf´s Parkett ?“

Down at sunset

Shortly before 21:00h the fog vanished

and exactly at 21:15h we could watch an

impressive sunset. Alphorn players played

the typical sound and melody of that

special alpine region scenery. At midnight

everybody, including the band with their

instruments, took the specially arranged

train down to the valley.

Many thanks to the Zugspitz-Prome-

naders !!! What a super, top-class, fabu-

lous, perfect special it was!!!

See you soon in a square…Maybe for the

10th-year???

Talfahrt bei Sonnenuntergang

Kurz vor 21 h verschwand der Nebel,

pünktlich um 21:15 h erlebten wir einen

eindrucksvollen Sonnenuntergang. Alp-

hornbläser begleiteten diese Szenerie. Um 0

Uhr gemeinsame Talfahrt mit der Zahnrad-

bahn (Sonderzug) zum Eibsee-Bahnhof

(Band und Instrumente eingeschlossen).

Herzlichen Dank den Zugspitz-

Promenaders !!! Ein „super-klasse-

spitzenmäßiges“ perfektes Special war zu

Ende !
