First Time in the World? - American rhythms in music and dance

it happened. Prepared

well in advance, Karlsruhe celebrated the

rebirth of the "Trachtenfest" (Tracht =

traditional costume). Under new patrons,

newly organized, newly presented and

loosely based on a concept that is over a

century old, the first "International Folk-

lore Festival – Folkloria" began in

Karlsruhe.

One day later, the above mentioned

world premiere took place. Since I do not

know of anything similar, I claim, until it

is disproved (if then the rectification will

take place), that this is a world premiere.

Performance with an orchestra

Together with the child string orchestra

"Saitenwind" (string wind) from the con-

servatory of Baden, the Lovely Caotics

Karlsruhe held a performance. "Saiten-

wind" is two years old and consists of 32

string musicians of the age between six

and twelve years.

It was a fascinating mixture, which all

participants enjoyed very much. There

was a big audience and a lot of applause.

As a special highlight of our common

performance a combination of western

music played by "Saitenwind" and square

dance was planned.

In addition we had a lot of good ideas in

advance. Particularly since a common

rehearsal could not take place before-

hand, because our employed dancers had

only time in the evening after the end of

their working day – but for the pupils this

time was too late. So we had to do it dif-

ferently. Up to this highlight of our per-

formance "Saitenwind" and the Lovely

Hand vorbereitet feierte Karlsruhe die Wie-

dergeburt des tot geglaubten Trachtenfestes.

Unter neuer Schirmherrschaft, neu organi-

siert, neu dargeboten und doch nach einem

über hundertjährigen Konzept begann das

erste Internationale Folklore Festival

„Folkloria“ in Karlsruhe.

Am Samstag, 24.09.2005, kam es dann zu

o.g. Welturaufführung. Da mir nichts der-

gleichen bekannt ist, behaupte ich dies bis

zur Widerlegung (Auf die dann eine Rich-

tigstellung erfolgen wird).

Gemeinsamer Auftritt mit Orchester

Gemeinsam mit dem Kinderstreichorches-

ter „Saitenwind“ des Badischen Konserva-

toriums bestritten die Lovely Caotics aus

Karlsruhe einen Auftritt. Das Kinder-

streichorchester besteht seit über zwei Jah-

ren aus 32 Streichern im Alter zwischen

sechs und zwölf Jahren.

Es war eine faszinierende Mischung, an der

alle Beteiligten viel Freude hatten. Es gab

viel Publikum und sehr viel Applaus. Als

besonderer Höhepunkt unseres gemeinsa-

men Auftrittes war eine Kombination aus

Westernmusik, gespielt von einem Streich-

orchester und Square Dance geplant.

Dazu hatten wir uns im Voraus sehr viele

Gedanken gemacht. Zumal eine gemeinsa-

me Probe vorher nie stattfinden konnte.

Denn unsere berufstätigen Tänzer hatten

erst nach Feierabend Zeit, die Schüler waren

zu diesem Zeitpunkt aber nicht mehr zu

organisieren. Also dachten wir uns etwas

aus. Bis zu diesem Höhepunkt unseres Auf-

trittes wechselten sich das Streichorchester

und die Lovely Caotics ab. Ein gemeinsames

Caotics swapped. A common topic, two

different presentations. But however

there should also be another combination

of both ensembles.

Unlike other demonstration dances, the

Lovely Caotics had learned something

off by heart. Since "Saitenwind" plays

different music to that common in square

dance, we thought, lets go back to a time

with rather similar music.

So we were in the year 1637 in the barn

of the extended family Smith in the mid-

dle of a new settlement area. And what

kind of dance would probably have been

danced? Exactly! A contra-dance. And

this was exactly what we did. We per-

formed a spin-off of "Venus and Mars".

It was a big success and even one day

later we were still addressed concerning

our performance the day before while we

participated at the pageant.

By the way, the pageant was very amus-

ing. In front of us was a group of black

forest people (Trachtenverein) with

cuckoo clocks and behind us a polish

brass orchestra. There was no way we

could play our own music. "Never mind!

Let´s just make the most of it!" So we

danced, while the pageant was stopped

every once a while, simply to polka

rhythms. Perhaps it was similar in former

times anyway? Anyhow, we had a lot of

fun and distributed a whole lot of flyers.

Newspaper Report

In the conservatory newspaper the fol-

lowing report will soon appear, written by

the conductor of "Saitenwind":

"American rhythms in dance and music

This time the autumn project of "Saiten-

wind" is a dance and a music event. We

work together with the Lovely Caotics, a

Thema, zwei unterschiedliche Darbietun-

gen. Dann jedoch sollte es auch noch eine

Kombination beider Ensembles geben.

Die Lovely Caotics hatte entgegen sonstigen

Gepflogenheiten etwas einstudiert. Da die

Musik eines Streichorchesters doch etwas

ganz anderes ist als die sonstige Square

Dance Musik, dachten wir uns, gehen wir

doch in der Zeit zurück. Und zwar in eine

Zeit mit ziemlich ähnlicher Musik.

Wir waren also im Jahr 1637 in der Scheune

der Großfamilie Smith mitten im neuen

Siedlungsgebiet. Und was hat man dort

wohl getanzt? Genau! Einen Contra-Dance.

Und genau das taten wir auch. „Venus und

Mars“ standen Pate.

Es war ein großer Erfolg und selbst am Tag

danach wurden wir auf dem Festumzug

noch darauf angesprochen.

Übrigens auch der Festumzug war ganz

amüsant. Vor uns lief ein Schwarzwälder

Trachtenverein mit Kuckucksuhren und hin-

ter uns eine polnische Blaskapelle. An eige-

ne Musik war dabei nur sehr begrenzt zu

denken. „Macht nichts! Machen wir halt das

Beste daraus!“ Also tanzten wir, während

der Zug immer mal zum Stillstand kam, ein-

fach auf Polka. Wissen wir, ob es nicht viel-

leicht früher sogar einmal ganz ähnlich war?

Wir jedenfalls hatten viel Spaß und haben

jede Menge Flyer verteilt.

Bericht in der Zeitung

In der Zeitung des Badischen Konservato-

rium steht demnächst sogar der folgende

Bericht, geschrieben von der Dirigentin des

Kinderstreichorchester „Saitenwind“:

„Amerikanische Rhythmen in Tanz und

Musik

Das Herbstprojekt des Kinderstreichorches-

ters „Saitenwind“ ist dieses Mal ein Tanz-

und Musikereignis, denn als Partner konnte

square dance club in Karlsruhe. West-

ern/American music is the topic of the

concert, which will take place in the

Stephanssaal.

Square Dance needs at least eight danc-

ers. This American dance is danced to a

caller. Very remarkable are the merry

multicolored flying petticoats of the

ladies.

Shortly before, both ensembles per-

formed together for the first time at the

international folklore festival "Folkloria"

in Karlsruhe.

The children string orchestra "string

wind" consists at present of 32 members

ranging in age from 6 to 12 years.

The performance lasts for one hour and

invites you to a merry demonstration for

both young and old visitors of the con-

cert.

Whoever doesn't want to miss this event

should come!

I want to take the opportunity to thank

all of the dancers. Only with your assis-

tance was it possible to carry out such a

older pair (I guess Christa and Gerd

Dieter were meant). With all talks I had

after our performance with parents of

"string wind", this pair was a topic and

the people were very impressed with so

amerikanische Musik ist somit das Thema

des Konzerts, das im Stephanssaal stattfin-

den wird.

Acht Tanzende braucht Square Dance min-

destens. Der amerikanische Tanz wird auf

Zuruf getanzt. Auffallend sind die fliegen-

den Petticoats der Damen in fröhlichen

bunten Farben.

Gemeinsam standen die beiden Ensembles

vor kurzen zum ersten Mal auf der Bühne

beim Internationalen Folklore Festival

„Folkloria“ in Karlsruhe.

Das KSO „Saitenwind“ besteht zur Zeit aus

32 Mitgliedern im Alter von 6 – 12 Jahren.

Die Aufführung dauert eine Stunde und lädt

ein zu einem Fröhlichen Vortrag für große

und kleine Konzertbesucher.

dieser Stelle Christa und Gerd-Dieter ge-

meint waren). Bei allen Gesprächen, die ich

nach unserem Auftritt mit Eltern vom KSO

„Saitenwind“ geführt habe, ging es um

dieses Paar und wie beeindruckt die Leute
