„Fun-Killers“ – The Undercover Club –

As at almost every event of the European

umbrella organisation of Square Dancers,

also at the 50 Year Jubilee the dancers

who belong to various clubs had to ask

themselves which badge they should be

wearing. Some of them handled it in a

very unusual way.

One of the badges was attached to the

shirt or belt as usual, the other though,

they placed demonstratively in their face.

The special aspects of these badges are

the joyless looks with a slight glimpse of

arrogance, whilst showing at the same

time no emotions on their faces whatso-

ever. No smile, no eye contact, no sign of

interest, except perhaps for the perfect

performance of the dancing figures.

The members of this somewhat strange

club are in general good dancers. But even

when everything works perfectly well, no

real fun will arise with them in the Square.

Well, even their club name is quite catch-

ing: “Fun Killers”, their name seems to be

a program. If you have a look at such

dancers, it looks like they are remote con-

trolled, almost like a robots dancing.

Dancing figures are only performed

purely mechanically.

The non-members of the “Fun Killers”

in the Square are only used as servants to

prove their own perfection.

What disrespect for those people, who are

prepared to face with common strength a

challenge, whose reward is the common

joy and solidarity!

“Fun Killers” create in the Square a

strange feeling of a vacuum. If the other

dancers would not have themselves, there

would only remain a deprived feeling in-

stead of the joy of dancing. At least they

auch beim 50 jährigen Jubiläum des Euro-

päischen Dachverbandes der Squaredancer

die Tänzer, die mehreren Clubs angehöri-

gen, fragen, welches Badge sie tragen wol-

len. Manche von ihnen haben es auf eine

besondere Weise gehandhabt.

Das eine Badge trug man wie gewöhnlich

am Hemd oder Gürtel, das andere jedoch

demonstrativ im Gesicht. Die besonderen

Merkmale dieses Badges sind der freudlose

Blick mit einem leichten Anflug von

Hochmut bei einer gleichzeitig extrem aus-

geprägten Form der Gesichtsstarre. Kein

Lächeln, kein Blickkontakt, keinerlei Re-

gung, von den perfekt ausgeführten Figu-

ren einmal abgesehen.

Die Mitglieder dieses sonderbaren Clubs

sind in der Regel gute Tänzer. Aber selbst

wenn alles reibungslos läuft, will keine rech-

te Freude im Square mit ihnen aufkommen.

Ach ja, bezeichnend ist auch der Clubname:

„Fun Killers“ Der Name dieses Clubs

scheint Programm zu sein. Betrachtet man

sich diese Tänzer, fällt auf, dass sie wie

ferngesteuert, roboterhaft tanzen. Figuren

werden rein mechanisch abgelaufen.

Die Nicht-Mitglieder der „Fun Killers“ im

Square werden lediglich als Erfüllungsgehil-

fen zum Beweis der eigenen Perfektion be-

nötigt.

Welche Missachtung von Menschen, die

bereit sind, sich mit vereinten Kräften einer

Herausforderung zu stellen, deren Lohn

gemeinsame Freude und Solidarität ist!

„Fun Killers“´ erzeugen im Square ein

merkwürdiges Gefühl eines Vakuums.

Wenn die anderen Tänzer sich nicht gegen-

seitig hätten, würde statt Freude am Tanz-

genuss am Ende nur das deprimierende

are able to cheer themselves up, have a

laugh together and help each other out if

any little dancing obstacle might occur.

The “Fun Killers” have existed for a long

time and the club seems to have the char-

acter of a travel club. Nothing connects

them: no common club evening, no

common feeling of community, no com-

mon aim. The bigger the Square Dance

Community becomes the more members

the “Fun Killers” seem to have.

Each one of you has surely experienced

some “Fun Killers” in the Square and you

can well imagine what I am talking about.

However, we should give the excessive

ego-trippers and all of the other members

of the “Fun Killers” that abuse Square

Dance and its values a chance. We should

get in touch with them directly about their

membership of the “Fun Killers”, asking

them to put the badge down and get back

to the basics, the four corners of Square

Dance. We should actually all think about

the values we were taught at the very be-

ginning in our Mainstream Class as the

basis for co-operation in Square Dancing.

Safety-Set – the training module that

promises success

The above-mentioned impression of a

remote controlled dancer could even

bring some idea to a techni-

cally/electronically gifted caller to develop

a corresponding W-LAN-controlled

module (a so called safety-set), to bring

the dancers into the right positions and

moves. Such a module would be the ideal

solution for the category of stu-

dents/dancers, of whom the others say,

“They will never learn it!”. Also in the

bulletin there would always be recom-

mendations on how to proceed with such

dancers. The safety-set would be an ideal

solution! These dancers would have the

Gefühl bleiben, ein Phantom zu sein. So

können diese sich wenigstens einander

aufmuntern und offen anlächeln, sich im

evtl. drohenden Pannenfall wohlwollend

und hilfreich beistehen.

Es gibt „Fun Killers“ schon sehr lange und

der Club trägt Züge eines Travelclubs. Die-

se Tänzer verbindet nichts: kein gemeinsa-

mer Clubabend, kein Gemeinschaftsgefühl,

kein gemeinsames Ziel. Je größer die

Square Dance Gemeinde wird, desto mehr

Mitglieder haben auch die „Fun Killers“.

Ihr habt sicher schon alle einmal „Fun Kil-

lers“ im Square gehabt und könnt nachvoll-

ziehen, wovon ich rede. Den exzessiven

Egotrippern und allen anderen Mitgliedern

der „Fun Killers“, die den Square Dance

und dessen Werte missbrauchen, sollten wir

eine Chance geben. Wir sollten sie direkt

auf ihre Mitgliedschaft bei den „Fun Kil-

lers“ ansprechen und sie bitten, das Badge

abzulegen und sich wieder auf die vier E-

cken des Square Dance zu besinnen. Wir

sollten uns immer wieder einmal erinnern,

welche Werte wir in unserer Mainstream

Class als Grundlage des Miteinanders bei

Square Dance vermittelt bekamen.

Safety-Set – Das erfolgversprechende

Trainingsmodul

Der bereits erwähnte Eindruck ferngesteu-

erter Tänzer könnte gar technisch-

elektronisch begabte Caller auf die Idee

bringen, ein entsprechendes W-LAN-

gesteuertes Modul (ein sogenanntes Safety-

Set) zu entwickeln, das die Tänzer in die

richtige Bewegung bringt. Ein solches Mo-

dul wäre die Lösung für die Kategorie von

Students/Tänzer, von denen die anderen

sagen, „die lernen es nie!“. Auch im Bulle-

tin gibt es immer wieder Empfehlungen,

wie mit solchen Tänzern denn umzugehen

sei. Dieses Safety-Set brächte die Lösung!

opportunity via this training module to

experience at least how certain dance fig-

ures feel when they are correctly per-

formed. They would be able to absorb the

correct movements in a complete new

way and that at all dancing levels.

The caller would have to do everything

though, as you could imagine him doing it

all like someone flying a model plane with

a steering unit. However, of course, he

would only be seen calling whilst using a

headset in the future.

Just imagine: no one would be bothered

any longer or mocked because of moder-

ate dancing skills or would be punished

with miserable, arrogant, irritated or tor-

mented looks and sarcastic smiles. All

dancers would finally enjoy dancing them-

selves; wouldn’t that be a nice vision of

the future?!

Afterparty with the awarding of points

With the rising number of dancers, there

have been a few experiences of late which

do have the non-observation of the

Square dance rules. Such a Jubilee is the

ideal occasion to get back to the basics

and the fundamental values of Square

Dancing itself from the past up to the

present day. As we got to know from a

well-informed source, it was planned to

have a special evening program at the Ju-

bilee. It was the intention to perform cer-

tain sketches to rekindle those values and

even a nice little competition was planned

to focus on these values.

In the first step the most frequently non-

observed rules in Square Dancing would

have been performed in a little sketch to

cause a few laughs and amusement, but

also to make them obvious and notice-

able. However, the wide range of every

behaviour with these rules as well as their

non-observance would have caused some

gungsabläufe auf eine ganz neue Weise ver-

innerlichen und zwar in jedem Tanzlevel.

Der Caller hätte dann im wahrsten Sinne

des Wortes alle Hände voll zu tun, wenn

man ihn sich mit einer Steuereinheit wie

etwa beim Modellflug in den Händen vor-

stellt. Deshalb callt er künftig grundsätzlich

nur noch mit Headset.

Stellt euch vor: niemand wird mehr wegen

mäßiger tänzerischer Fähigkeiten im Square

mit verächtlichen, hochmütigen, genervten

oder gequältem Blicken und sarkastischem

Lächeln abgestraft. Alle Tänzer wären end-

lich auch wirklich Tanzfreunde. Es böte in

jedem Tanzlevel paradiesisches Tanzver-

gnügen. Wäre das nicht eine schöne Zu-

kunftsvision?!

Afterparty mit Punktwertung

Mit der zunehmenden Zahl der Tänzer

häufen sich in der letzten Zeit auch Erleb-

nisse, denen die Nichtbeachtung der

Squaredance-Regeln zugrunde liegt. So ein

Jubiläum ist die geeignete Gelegenheit, auf

die Ursprünge und die bis heute prokla-

mierten Werte Bezug nehmen. So was aus

einer gut informierten Quelle zu erfahren,

dass im Vorfeld der Planungen für die Jubi-

läumsveranstaltung über ein Abendpro-

gramm der besonderen Art nachgedacht

wurde. Dabei sollten in Form szenischer

Darstellungen und eines kleinen heiteren

Wettbewerbs diese Werte wieder neu in den

Fokus gerückt werden.

Im ersten Stepp sollten die häufigsten For-

men der Nichtbeachtung der Squaredance-

Regeln humorvoll in Szene gesetzt werden

und so bewusst gemacht werden. Auch die

breite Palette, des jeweiligen Umgangs mit

diesen Regelmissachtungen hätte sowohl

zur Erheiterung als auch zur nachdenkli-

laughter as well as a reflection on their

own behaviour. Well, this was the initial

idea.

In the second step, the competition was

planned. In two different variants the

point values would have been calculated.

Variant a: 1 point for the an-

swer: “Yes, I also know such people.

I can tell you exactly who it is and in

which club he/she dances”.

Variant b: 4 points for the an-

swer: “Yes, caught me there! I think

I have to tap my own shoulder for

that”.

However, as it is well known that Square

dancers mainly want to dance, it was de-

cided against that form of afterparty.

The reasons and background that led to

that decision makes me think a bit and

therefore I would like to name them as

follows:

The dancers have almost no interest,

if something is not linked to Square

Dance = active dancing (does this also

explains the small participation at mem-

bership meetings?)

Forms of courtesy are disregarded

regarding people who have a function =

no one really listens any longer when

political representatives of communities

and cities send their best regards. They

do support our hobby however by co-

operation in various ways and offer us

places where we can dance. They should

be able to expect at least this max. 5 up

to 10 min of valuable time of our atten-

tion. I believe that such a form of sup-

port will become more and more impor-

tant for us active dancers in the future.

There were as well quite big doubts, as

ist und bei welchem Club dieser Tän-

zer tanzt.

Variante b: 4 Punkte für die Ant-

wort: „Voll erwischt! Da muss ich

mich an die eigene Nase fassen“

Weil aber bekannt ist, dass Squaredancer in

erster Linie tanzen wollen, hat man sich

gegen diese Form der Afterparty entschie-

den.

Die Gründe und Hintergründe, die zu die-

ser Entscheidung geführt haben, stimmen

mich nachdenklich und deshalb will ich sie

kurz benennen:

Die Tänzer zeigen kaum Interesse,

wenn etwas nicht direkt mit Square Dance

= mit aktivem Tanzen zu tun hat (erklärt

das bereits die magere Beteiligung bei den

Membership-Meetings?)

Formen der Höflichkeit gegenüber

Funktionsträgern werden missachtet =

kaum einer hört wirklich zu, wenn politi-

sche Vertreter von Kommunen und Städ-

ten ihre Grußworte überbringen. Sie un-

terstützen doch unser Hobby durch Ko-

operation in verschiedenster Weise und

stellen uns konkret Hallen zur Verfügung.

Diese 5 bis max. 10 Minuten wertschät-

zende Aufmerksamkeit dürfen sie doch

wohl erwarten. Es wird doch zur Zeit ge-

rade eine solche Unterstützung immer

wichtiger und wertvoller für uns aktive

Tänzer.

to whether such sketches would have

brought the aimed value and effect

which was originally planned.

From the point of view of most

dancers, the board exists to arrange only

for the framework of our joy. All other

efforts beyond this were not considered

to be worthwhile. Therefore, as a board,

you really do not put additional hassle

onto your list for organisation or other

extras.

It is a pity really. I would have enjoyed this

kind of humorous self-reflection. This

would have supported the motto “Keep

smiling and have fun” concept within the

framework of such a special afterparty in

a convincing manner. In the most valu-

able case, this could have also led to an

improvement of the atmosphere in future

Squares.

Perhaps the recommendations of how to

handle “Fun Killers” may already be

worthwhile and will hopefully lead to an

improvement in behaviour. The impor-

tant bit is still that we should talk directly

to such “Fun Killers”, as in most cases,

they do not know how they act. However,

see you all soon in the next Square with-

out “Fun Killers”-badges.

A good way to bring more fun into the

group is to think back to the basics of the

four corners of the Square Dance, as we

all have learnt it during one of our Main-

stream Classes.

Große Zweifel gab es dann schließlich,

ob eine solche humorige, aber durchaus

erzieherisch ernst gemeinte Inszenierung

wirklich den gewünschten Effekt gebracht

hätte.

Aus Sicht der meisten Tänzer ist das

Board dazu da, die Rahmenbedingungen

für unser Vergnügen zu schaffen. Jegliche

darüber hinausgehenden Bemühungen

würden deshalb nicht gewürdigt. Also läd

man sich als Board nicht noch zusätzliche

Last und Organisation auf.

Schade eigentlich. Mir hätte diese humor-

volle Form als Chance zur Selbsterkenntnis

gefallen. Das hätte das Motto „Keep smi-

ling and have fun“ konzeptionell im Rah-

men einer solch besonderen Afterparty

überzeugend weitergeführt. Im besten Fall

könnte eine solche Sensibilisierung zu einer

Verbesserung der Atmosphäre in künftigen

Squares beigetragen.

Sei´s drum, vielleicht ist ja auch die Ve rhal-

tensempfehlung für den Umgang mit „Fun

Killers“ schon hilfreich und führt zur ge-

wünschten Verbesserung. Wichtig dabei:

wir müssen „Fun Killers“ direkt anspre-

chen, denn sie selbst sind sich ihrer Wir-

kung oft gar nicht bewusst. Bis bald im

nächsten Square ohne „Fun Killers“-

Badges.

Ein guter Weg zu mehr gemeinsamem Spaß

ist die Rückbesinnung auf die vier Ecken

des Square Dance wie wir es alle einmal

während einer Mainstream-Class gelernt

haben.
