Dress Code / Kleiderordnung

At the most recent ECTA Convention the

topic of Dress Code for Square Dance

activities was discussed. Many of the

points which have been brought up re-

cently were included in the discussion.

Even though the majority of the callers

present felt that the traditional Square

Dance attire should not be lost it was felt

that other options should be available in

cases where it is desired or more appro-

priate.

In the United States and other parts of the

world a possibility for a somewhat more

relaxed Dress Code was accepted in De-

cember 2000. That code is described be-

low. It is recommended by ECTA that a

new code be adopted, accepted and used

in the future for dances here in Europe.

The type of dress required at various

dances and clubs should be made known

on flyers and advertisements for the dance.

It should be noted that regardless what the

advertised code is, that “Traditional Attire”

is always appropriate. We must remember

that the most important part of Square

Dancing is the fun and friendship and that

the Dress Code may at times deter from

this.

The Dress Code should also be made

known for the various club dances, which

vary from club to club and at various times

during the year. It is recommended that

EAASDC look at the possibility of listing

this information on the club listings which

Convention wurde das Thema Kleiderord-

nung beim Square Dance diskutiert. Viele

Gesichtspunkte, die in letzter Zeit auf-

kamen, wurden angesprochen. Obwohl die

Mehrheit der anwesenden Caller die Mei-

nung vertrat, dass die traditionelle Square-

Dance-Kleidung nicht verloren gehen soll-

te, möchte man in Fällen, wo es gewünscht

wird oder besser passt, zusätzlich andere

Möglichkeiten schaffen.

In den USA und anderen Teilen der Welt

wurde im Dezember 2000 eine etwas mehr

legere Kleiderordnung akzeptiert. Diese

Regeln sind weiter unten beschrieben. Von

ECTA wird empfohlen, die Kleiderord-

nung neu zu regeln, zu akzeptieren und

zukünftig bei Tänzen hier in Europa zu

nutzen. Auf den Flyern sollte die erforder-

liche Art der Kleidung für die Tänze und

Clubs angegeben werden.

Es sollte beachtet werden, dass unabhän-

gig vom angegebenen Dresscode die tradi-

tionelle Kleidung immer akzeptiert ist. Wir

müssen aber bedenken, dass der wichtigste

Teil vom Square Dance der Spaß und die

Freundschaft ist, und dass die Kleiderord-

nung manchmal hinderlich sein könnte.

Die Kleiderordnung sollte auch für Club-

abende bekannt gemacht werden, da sie

von Club zu Club und auch zu verschiede-

nen Zeiten im Jahr unterschiedlich sein

kann. Es wird empfohlen, dass EAASDC

the information available to dancers who

are travelling and visiting neighbouring

clubs.

The Dress Code recommended for con-

sideration and adoption is:

Traditional Square Dance Attire:

“Traditional” square dance attire provides a

connection to the history of our activity,

adds to the visual enjoyment of partici-

pants and spectators, enhances individual

dancer styling included in individual calls,

and provides for the protection and mutual

comfort of dancers i.e. shoes, long sleeved

shirts, petticoats, etc.. The “Prairie Skirt” is

also included in the category of “Tradi-

tional Attire”.

Proper Square Dance Attire:

Traditional attire can at times be an incon-

venience to dancers, and even deter people

from joining and/or participating alto-

gether. At these times a code of “Proper”

could be used. This includes slacks and

dress jeans for men and women and short

sleeved dress or polo shirts for men.

T-shirts for men do not fall into this cate-

gory. It should be noted that even if an

event is advertised as “proper” attire, “tra-

ditional” attire is always appropriate.

Casual Square Dance Attire:

Although proper attire may allow for a

wide variety of choices, there may be times

when travelling, weather and other con-

ditions would discourage dancers from

following either traditional or proper Dress

Codes. In that event, leaders are encour-

aged to advertise those dances/sessions/

Traditionelle Square-Dance-Kleidung:

„Traditionelle“ Square-Dance-Kleidung ist

die Verbindung zur Geschichte unserer

Aktivität, trägt zur visuellen Freude von

Teilnehmern und Zuschauern bei, unter-

stützt individuelles Styling bei manchen

Tanzfiguren und bietet Schutz und Be-

quemlichkeit, z.B. Schuhe, lang ärmelige

Hemden, Petticoats, etc. Der Prärierock

gehört ebenfalls in die Kategorie „Tradi-

tionelle Kleidung“.

Korrekte Square-Dance-Kleidung:

Traditionelle Kleidung kann manchmal für

Tänzer unbequem sein und sogar Leute

davon abhalten, einzusteigen und/oder

teilzunehmen. Dann kann die Kleiderord-

nung „proper“ benutzt werden. Sie be-

inhaltet lange Hosen und ordentliche Jeans

für Männer und Frauen und kurzärmlige

Hemden und Poloshirts für Männer.

T-shirts für Männer fallen nicht in diese

Kategorie. Es sollte aber beachtetet wer-

den: Auch wenn eine Veranstaltung mit

„proper“ angegeben ist, ist „traditionell“

immer passend.

Lässige Square-Dance-Kleidung:

Obwohl korrekt bereits eine breite Palette

an Auswahl bietet, kann es Gründe geben,

z.B. Reisen, Wetter oder andere Umstände,

wo Tänzer weder traditionell noch korrekt

tragen möchten. In diesem Fall können

festivals, etc. as “casual” attire. It should

be noted that if an event is advertised as

“casual” attire, “traditional” and “proper”

attire are always appropriate. Regardless of

the code that is desired for a particular

dance, the attire should always be in good

taste.

Clubs and leaders who run dances and

weekend festivals are encouraged to

specify “traditional attire”, “proper attire”,

or “casual attire” for their individual

dances, sessions and events. A policy of

tolerance and encouraged by all square

dance leaders and participants should be

supported.

The opportunity of fun and friendship

should not be lost irregardless of the code

that is selected.

Square Dancer sollten dieser Wahl mit To-

leranz begegnen.

Die Gelegenheit für Spaß und Freund-

schaft sollte nicht verloren gehen, un-

abhängig vom gewählten Dresscode.
