European Convention

Well, it’s finally come and gone!!! The

European Convention, hosted by our-

selves the BAASDC, was FABULOUS!.

With so many things that could go

wrong, and some that did beforehand, it

had potential to be a disaster. But it was

wonderful. I should like to thank all those

dancers from so many countries who

crossed the water to our little island by

various means and who made the Con-

vention so wonderful. I bet you won’t

forget our “Magic Roundabout” in a

hurry!

It is not easy hosting a huge multi-

national event like the European Conven-

tion. We are not used in England to deal-

ing with so many nationalities and lan-

guages - helping them with travel ar-

rangements from airports, accommoda-

tion, payment in different denominations,

just differences in expectations. We don’t

have “After-parties” in this country for

instance, but it’s expected with the Euro-

peans and I think it was very successful- a

good wind-down. I apologise for my

“Miss Sophie” rendition as I stood in for

someone else when she became ill and

did not get a chance to look at the words

till the afterparty. Luckily I did know the

story but I know I got a couple of words

wrong, especially when I was cheered

afterwards for getting them right!!!!

In March 2003, our Association had its

50

th

Anniversary celebrations and the

most suitable large, affordable venue to

be found in England was Hemel Hemp-

stead Sports Centre and the School. We

needed somewhere close to the major

airports, especially the cheaper ones. So

we chose the same venue for the Euro-

pean Convention. I know it wasn’t ideal

tet von uns selbst, der BAASDC (British Asso-

ciation of American Square Dance), war fabel-

haft! Bei so vielen Dingen, die schief gehen

konnten und einigen, die es im Vorfeld auch

taten, hätte es auch ein Reinfall werden können.

Aber es war wundervoll. Ich möchte gern all den

Tänzern aus so vielen Ländern danken, die das

Wasser zu unserer kleinen Insel auf vielfältige

Weise überquerten und die Convention so

fantastisch werden ließen. Ich wette, Ihr werdet

unser „Magic Roundabout“ nicht so schnell ver-

gessen!

Es ist nicht einfach, eine riesige multinationale

Veranstaltung wie die European Convention

auszurichten. Wir sind es in England nicht ge-

wohnt, mit so vielen Nationalitäten und Spra-

chen – auch ganz unterschiedlichen Erwartun-

gen – umzugehen und ihnen bei der Reiseorga-

nisation zum Flughafen, Unterkunft und Bezah-

lung in verschiedenen Währungen zu helfen. Wir

haben hierzulande z.B. keine Afterparties, aber

sie werden von den Europäern erwartet, und ich

denke, sie waren sehr erfolgreich – eine schöner

Abschluss. Ich entschuldige mich für meine Dar-

stellung der „Miss Sophie“, da ich für eine Er-

krankte eingesprungen war und keine Möglich-

keit hatte, vor der Afterparty auf den Text zu

schauen. Glücklicherweise kannte ich die Ge-

schichte, aber ich weiß, dass ein paar Worte

falsch waren, vor allem wenn ich anschließend

Beifall dafür erhielt, dass ich sie richtig hinbe-

kam!!!

Im März 2003 hatte unsere Vereinigung ihren 50.

Geburtstag gefeiert. Der von der Größe am bes-

ten geeignete erschwingliche Tanzplatz in Eng-

land war das Hemel Hempstead Sportzentrum

und die Schule. Wir benötigten etwas in der Nä-

he der großen Flughäfen, besonders der preis-

werteren. Deshalb wählten wir den selben Platz

but again, our country is small and we

don’t have suitable halls. I think that our

weather was so good this weekend that it

almost felt like a Continental affair.

There were about 1100 dancers attending

this weekend, although the final figures

may be slightly different. That includes

from abroad: Australia 10, Belgium 7,

Czech Rep. 1, Denmark 59, Finland 2,

Germany 223, The Netherlands 13, New

Zealand 2, Norway 15, Spain 2, Sweden

103, Switzerland 14 and the USA 7. We

also had 627 from Great Britain. Al-

though the Convention is a European

one, held in collaboration with the Euro-

pean Associations but hosted by Great

Britain, we also had 19 Callers and Cuers

from both England and the participating

European Nations; Germany, Sweden,

Denmark and the Netherlands. Great

friendships were made I am sure!!

Amongst the visitors were the Presidents

or Representatives of the European

Associations of Square Dancing and also

the Mayor of Hemel Hempstead,

Catherine Appleby. We were very proud

that she came to our Grand Ceremony

on Saturday Evening.

Thanks too to the dancers who came

after the event to do even more dancing

in the Shopping Centre. England has

never seen anything quite like that – 20

squares of mostly frilly petticoats whirling

around to 9 of the best callers. We don’t

tend to have “dancing in the square”, cer-

tainly not with those numbers. The callers

and cuers really did a wonderful job too.

I hope to see more of you all soon, in a

square, either in England or your own

countries. Thank you all again for making

this European Convention so successful.

war nicht ideal, aber noch einmal: unser Land ist

klein und wir haben keine passenden Hallen. Ich

denke, unser Wetter war an diesem Wochenende

so gut, dass es fast wie eine Veranstaltung auf

dem Festland erschien.

Es waren ungefähr 1100 Teilnehmer an diesem

Wochenende, obwohl die endgültigen Zahlen

leicht abweichen können. Von auswärts kamen:

Australien 10, Belgien 7, Dänemark 59, Deutsch-

land 223, Finnland 2, Neuseeland 2, Niederlande

13, Norwegen 15, Spanien 2, Schweden 103,

Schweiz 14, Tschechische Republik 1 und den

USA 7. Aus Großbritannien kamen 627. Weil es

eine europäische Convention ist, mit Großbri-

tannien als Gastgeber, aber in Zusammenarbeit

mit den europäischen Vereinigungen, hatten wir

England und den teilnehmenden europäischen

Nationen: Deutschland, Schweden, Dänemark

und die Niederlande. Große Freundschaften

wurden geschlossen, da bin ich sicher!

Unter den Besuchern waren auch die Präsiden-

ten oder Vertreter der europäischen Square

Dance Vereinigungen sowie die Bürgermeisterin

von Hemel Hempstead, Catherine Appleby. Wir

waren sehr stolz, dass sie zu unserer großen

Zeremonie am Samstagabend kam.

Dank auch an jene Tänzer, die nach der Veran-

staltung ins Einkaufszentrum kamen, um dort

noch weiter zu tanzen. England hat so etwas

niemals zuvor gesehen: 20 Squares mit meistens

rüschigen Petticoats drehten sich zu neun der

besten Caller. Wir tanzen sonst eher nicht „im

Quadrat“ (so heißt bei uns „auf öffentlichen

Plätzen“), erst recht nicht in dieser Anzahl. Auch

die Caller und Cuer machten ihre Sache wirklich

wundervoll.

Ich hoffe bald mehr von euch in einem Square

zu sehen, entweder in England oder in euren

eigenen Ländern. Nochmals ein Dank an euch

alle, die ihr diese European Convention so er-

folgreich gemacht haben.
