Caller Critique
Hello!
During the last Jamborees I’ve been
asked a couple of times: What is the
Caller’s Critique? And: Is this program
topic open for everybody?
First my answer to the second question.
YES! The topic is open for everybody
who can dance the Mainstream Program.
Some years ago the Critique was a test to
achieve the “active“ membership in
ECTA. In the other branches of ECTA,
like Round Dance Clogging and Contra/
Traditional, these tests are still carried
out. During these tests a committee
adjucates if the ability is given to reach
the active membership in ECTA. After
confirming the test the participant can
wear the so-called “ECTA white badge”.
In the Square Dance section this test was
discontinued for several reasons. This
happened before I began with square
dancing and calling (before 1989), so I
never really asked “Why?”.
The Critique we have now was estab-
lished again, to give “young” or “new”
callers the possibility to be rated from an
independent person and to call in front
of a different audience. The attendance
at a Caller’s Critique is always voluntary
and the only qualification to attend is the
membership in ECTA.
During the critique the “delinquent” will
call a whole tip with a hoedown and a
singing call. During the hoedown the

mehrfach angesprochen worden, was denn
diese Caller Critiqe ist. Und ob der Pro-
grammpunkt offen für alle ist.
Zuerst meine Antwort auf die zweite Frage.
JA! Die Critique ist offen für alle, die das
Mainstream Programm tanzen können.
Vor einigen Jahre war die Critique eine
Prüfung, um den Status der „aktiven“ Mit-
gliedschaft in ECTA zu erlangen. In den
Tanzsparten Round Dance, Clogging und
Contra/Traditional gibt es diese Tests heute
noch. Hier wird von einem Komitee ent-
schieden, ob das nötige Können für eine
aktive Mitgliedschaft in ECTA vorhanden
ist. Nach Bestehen der Prüfung dürfen die
Leader das sogenannte „weiße ECTA
Badge“ tragen.
Im Bereich Square Dance wurde diese
Prüfung aus verschiedenen Gründen abge-
schafft. Da dieses vor meiner Zeit als
Square Tänzer und Caller geschah (also vor
1989), war es für mich nie sehr wichtig zu
Die Critique im derzeitigen Sinn wurde wie-
der eingeführt, um „jungen“ oder „neuen“
Callern die Möglichkeit zu geben, den Stand
ihres Könnens mal von einer unabhängigen
Person beurteilen zu lassen und mal vor
einem fremden Publikum zu callen. Die
Teilnahme an der Critique ist freiwillig und
nur an die Voraussetzung gebunden, dass
der Freiwillige Mitglied in ECTA ist.
