Designing Flyers: Do not forget the Rail Travellers!

Flyergestaltung: Denkt an die Bahnfahrer!

As a convinced user of public transport,

I always try to travel to specials (and club

evenings) by bus and train. The corre-

sponding information on the flyers is ob-

viously useful in this respect. One nega-

tive example of a flyer should suffice

here but I could mention a whole series

of them. The positive examples should

show how those responsible in the clubs

have provided the required information

for different prevailing local situations on

the flyer.

Negative example:

An example for inadequate direction on a

flyer:

"Event location: Seeheim Kulturhalle,

motorway exit Seeheim, then follow the

signs."

The reply "Everyone in Seeheim knows

the Kulturhalle, simply ask" is also an

inadequate reply when one asks for direc-

tions by telephone."

No information on the flyer that a bus

stop is situated directly opposite the hall

(important for dancers who wish to come

by public transport).

Don't forget the route planner

Information such as the name of the

road (best of all with the house number)

is absolutely necessary for car drivers

who wish to plan their journey with a

route planner or dancers who come by

public transport.

The instruction "Follow the Signs" also

does not suffice without a street or route

description. What if the signs have been

taken down (as a joke or because it was

ordered by the regulatory authorities, for

Als überzeugter Nutzer von öffentlichen

Verkehrsmitteln versuche ich, wenn immer

möglich, per Bahn und Bus zu Specials (und

Clubabenden) anzureisen. Dazu sind natür-

lich auf den Flyern die entsprechenden An-

gaben hilfreich. Ein negatives Beispiel für

die Flyergestaltung man hier genügen, ob-

wohl ich noch eine ganze Reihe aufzählen

könnte. Die positiven Beispiele sollen zei-

gen, wie in unterschiedlichen örtlichen Aus-

gangssituationen die Clubverantwortlichen

die nötigen Informationen auf dem Flyer

veröffentlichet haben.

Negatives Beispiel:

Ein Beispiel für eine nicht ausreichende

Wegbeschreibung auf einem Flyer:

"Veranstaltungsort: Kulturhalle Seeheim

Autoabfahrt Seeheim, danach Follow signs."

Nicht ausreichend ist ebenfalls der Hinweis

auf eine telefonische Nachfrage: "In See-

heim kennt jeder, den ihr fragt, die Kultur-

halle."

Kein Hinweis auf dem Flyer, dass genau

gegenüber der Halle eine Bushaltestelle ist

(wichtiger Hinweis für solche Tänzer, die

mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln anreisen

wollen).

An Routenplaner denken

Für Autofahrer, die mit einem Routenplaner

ihre Anreise planen wollen oder für Tänzer,

die mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln anrei-

sen, ist die Angabe des Straßennamens

(möglichst mit Hausnummer) unbedingt

erforderlich.

Ebenso genügt nicht der Hinweis "Follow

signs" ohne Straßenangabe oder Wegbe-

schreibung. Was ist, wenn die Signs (aus Jux

oder z.B. vom Ordnungsamt) abgehängt

example)? What if it is dark? The signs

are typically hung up when it is light but

the dancers´ journey can often be in poor

viewing conditions, especially in winter.

The (amusing sounding) excuse of the

organizer that only those who manage to

find us have earned the right to dance

with us, needs no comment here.

Suggestion for a letter

I recommend that dancers who also wish

to come "public" and are unable to find

the required information on the flyer,

send the following text to the stipulated

contact by letter or even faster, by e-mail:

"Hello XY,

I would like to come to your Special on

Saturday. Your flyer includes a page de-

scribing how to get there by car. You did

not think of those coming by train

though. The street where the hall is situ-

ated is not mentioned. No search systems

work without the name of a street. I

hope to hear from you in good time so

that I can come on Saturday.

Hear from you soon?"

Positive examples:

Dragon Dance 2007: the flyer includes

information on the name of the road

with the house number and the postal

code for the dance location. This pro-

vides car drivers with all of the informa-

tion they require for their navigation

system and rail travellers have the infor-

mation they require for the timetable

search system. In addition to detailed

travel directions for car drivers, one also

finds the information: "By tram: take the

number 3 from the railway station and

alight at the terminal stop Lichten-

bergschule."

Lenz-Dance 2007: the travel directions

on the flyer commence with "1. Arriving

werden? Was ist bei Dunkelheit? Typischer-

weise werden die Signs bei Helligkeit aufge-

hängt, die Anreise der Tänzer kann aber –

gerade im Winter – bei schlechten Sichtver-

hältnissen stattfinden.

Die (lustig klingende) Ausrede der Veran-

stalter, nur wer es schafft uns zu finden, hat

auch verdient mit uns zu tanzen, bleibt hier

unkommentiert.

Textvorschlag für einen Brief

Tänzern, die ebenfalls "öffentlich" anreisen

wollen und auf Flyern nicht die nötigen In-

formationen finden, empfehle ich folgenden

Text per Brief oder, schneller, per E-Mail,

an die jeweils genannte Kontaktperson zu

schicken:

"Hallo XY,

ich würde gerne am Samstag zu eurem Spe-

cial kommen. Auf dem Flyer ist auch eine

ganze Seite lang beschrieben, wie man als

Autofahrer dort hin kommt. An die Bahn-

fahrer habt ihr leider nicht gedacht. Es fehlt

der Name der Straße, in der die Halle liegt.

Ohne Straßennamen funktioniert kein Such-

system. Hoffe, dass ich noch rechtzeitig von

dir Antwort erhalte, damit ich am Samstag

kommen kann.

Bis bald?"

Positive Beispiele:

Dragon Dance 2007: Auf dem Flyer sind

sowohl Straßenname mit Hausnummer als

auch Postleitzahl des Veranstaltungsortes

angegeben. Damit haben Autofahrer für ihr

Navi-System als auch Bahnfahrer für das

Fahrplan-Suchsystem die notwendigen An-

gaben. Neben einer ausführlichen Weg-

beschreibung für Autofahrer findet man

zusätzlich den Hinweis: "Mit der Straßen-

bahn: Vom Hauptbahnhof aus mit der Linie

3 bis zur Endhaltestele Lichtenbergschule."

Lenz-Dance 2007: Bei der Wegbeschrei-

bung auf dem Flyer steht an erster Stelle:

description. Only then does one find the

various possibilities which car drivers

have.

Capital Dance: The dance venue is ex-

actly stated with the name of the road:

Sporthalle Bonn-Duisdorf, Schmittstr.

This enables a search to be carried out

using a route planner.

In addition to the normal travel direc-

tions for car drivers, the flyer also stated

the bus routes from Bonn railway station

and the stop where one has to alight

(Rathaus Hardtberg). The stop and the

route to the dance hall are included in the

form of a small sketch. Perfect. This en-

ables non-motorised and environmentally

conscious dancers to find their way to the

Special.

Maypole 2006: In addition to a sketch

for car drivers, the public transport in-

formation is also included on the flyer in

bold print: Urban railway S4 - Haar rail-

way station (4 minute's walk). The exact

street and house number is also included.

Globetrotter dance 2006: In addition to

a sketch showing the motorways, the fol-

lowing information is also included: "We

can also be reached by Urban Railway

(the station is only ca. 100m away). Last

return journey at 0.30 a.m.

Summary

1. Please state the name of the road

with house number of the dance

even on the flyer.

2. If possible, state how to reach the

dance location by public transport.

"1. Anfahrt mit Bahn und Bus" und dann

folgt eine ausführliche Beschreibung. Erst

danach folgen die verschiedenen Möglich-

keiten für Autofahrer.

Capital Dance: Auf dem Flyer ist der

Tanzort mit Straßenname genau angegeben:

Sporthalle Bonn-Duisdorf, Schmittstraße.

Eine Suche mittels Routenplaner ist dadurch

möglich.

Neben der üblichen Wegbeschreibung für

Autofahrer sind außerdem die Buslinien ab

Bonn Hauptbahnhof sowie die Haltestelle

für den Ausstieg (Rathaus Hardtberg) ange-

geben. In einer kleinen Skizze sind die Hal-

testelle und der Weg zur Tanzhalle einge-

zeichnet. Perfekt. So finden auch nicht-

motorisierte und umweltbewusste Tänzer

den Weg zum Special.

Maypole 2006: Neben einer Skizze für die

Autofahrer steht dick gedruckt auf dem

Flyer der Hinweis auf öffentliche Ver-

kehrsmittel: S-Bahn S4 - Bahnhof Haar (4

Minuten Fußweg). Auch die genaue Stra-

ßenangabe mit Hausnummer ist vorhanden.

Globetrotterdance 2006: Neben einer

Skizze mit Autobahnen der Hinweis: "Wir

sind auch per S-Bahn zu erreichen (der

Bahnhof ist nur ca. 100 m entfernt). Letzte

Rückfahrt gegen 0.30 Uhr.

Fazit

1.

Gebt bitte den Straßennamen mit

Hausnummer des Veranstaltungsortes

auf dem Flyer an.

2.

Nennt, wenn möglich, eine Verbindung

mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln zum

Veranstaltungsort.
