New & old from Bödabaden / Neues & Altes aus Bödabaden

For 23 years now on the Swedish island
of Öland there exists a Dance Resort with
camping area called Bödabaden. Since the
new year 2006/07 Dave Wilson the well
known caller is the new owner.

Having been there twice for Round Dance
in the last two years I was now eager to
know how much fun Square dancing will
be there, so I invited my mother Gunda to
join me for the very first two weeks of the
dance season 2007. We danced “Rehearsal
and Variations” of Mainstream and Plus
for seniors.
The first impression on arrival is a warm
welcome by Dave, Alex, Anders and
Svantje, the main team, with the words
“Welcome back!” Additionally the kitchen
staff beams of hearty candor and verve.
The new team is really keen to see all
dancers are doing fine (!). The office door
is always open, any wish or suggestion is
welcome and every day we found small
adjustments and improvements. Sup-
ported by the founders of the Dance Re-
sort, Inger and Gösta

Nov. 2004, p. 65, notice of Editor)

cause she helps in the kitchen and he or-
ganises sightseeing tours in the area, and
so both contribute essentially to the warm
atmosphere.
On the first evening large halves of
salmon welcome you to feast on. Even
during the second week the salmon was
plentiful (for 80 persons) and tasted even

Die letzten beiden Jahre war ich zum
Round Dance schon dort gewesen. So war
ich neugierig, wie Square tanzen dort sein
würde. Ich lud meine Mutter Gunda ein,
mit mir gleich die ersten zwei Wochen der
Tanzsaison 2007 dort zu verbringen. Wir
tanzten Mainstream und Plus „Wieder-
holung und Variationen“ für Senioren.
Bei der Ankunft wirst Du freundlich von
Dave, Alex, Anders und Svantje, dem
Hauptteam, begrüßt mit „Schön das Ihr
wieder da seid“. Auch das Küchenpersonal
strahlt voll herzlicher Offenheit und Elan.
Das neue Team ist sehr bemüht, dass es
uns Tänzern sehr (!) gut geht. Die Bürotüre
ist immer offen, Wünsche und Vorschläge
sind willkommen und jeden Tag gibt es
kleine Veränderungen und Verbesserungen.
Kräftige Unterstützung bekommen sie
auch von den Gründern des Dance Resort,
Inger und Gösta
(vgl. Bulletin November
2004, S. 65, Anm. d. Editors)
, weil sie in
der Küche mithilft und er Besichtigungs-
touren in die Umgebung organisiert und
beide damit die Atmosphäre bereichern.
Große Lachshälften laden gleich am ersten
Abend zum Schlemmen ein. In der zweiten
Woche war der Lachs noch reichlicher (für
80 Personen) und schmeckte noch besser!

better! Full board with wholesome and
ample meals seem to be the new motto
under Dave’s leadership. I always saw all
the dancers joining for a lunch consisting
almost entirely of Mediterranean cuisine
and I heard the compliment: “We should
dance more in order to be able to eat and
enjoy all these different meals”.
For those planning a tour right after the
morning dance until the start of the
evening dance, thus skipping lunch and
dinner, can simply prepare their lunch
packet from the breakfast buffet, Dave
advises. Thus the price for full board is
very attractive.
The biggest modernisation in the dining
room is the two temperature-controlled
sideboards for self-service, complemented
in the second week by two plate-warmers.
The concierge Ole Nielson had been here
already since April and fixed the resort so
that it still looks as new as in the first days.
The rooms above the saloon are now all
equipped with showers and a WC.
Another modernisation is essential for
Dave: for the whole camping ground the
WLAN is free of charge, wireless connec-
tion to the internet is possible as well as
VoIP phoning. The old rentable trailers

ter Dave’s Führung zu sein. Das Mittages-
sen war fast immer eine mediterrane Salat-
bar, – und alle Tänzer immer anwesend. So
hörte ich: „Wir müssten mehr tanzen, da-
mit wir mehr von dem guten abwechs-
lungsreichen Essen genießen können“.
Wer ein Lunchpaket braucht, weil er gleich
nach dem Vormittagstanz wegfahren und
erst zum Abendtanz zurück sein will,
nehme sich vom leckeren Frühstücks-
büffet, was er braucht, empfiehlt Dave. Al-
so der Preis für die Vollpension ist absolut
attraktiv.
Im Speisesaal fallen vor allem die zwei
neuen temperaturgeregelten Büffetanrich-
ten zur Selbstbedienung auf, in der zweiten
Woche kamen sogar Tellerwärmer dazu.
Der Hausmeister Ole Nielson hat das Ge-
lände im April so toll in Schuss gebracht,
dass die gesamte Anlage noch immer wie
neu aussieht. Die Zimmer am Gang (24-30)
oberhalb des Saloons sind jetzt alle mit
Nasszelle ausgestattet.
Modern wird der Campingplatz mittels des
kostenlosen WLAN, zur drahtlosen Inter-
net-Verbindung in die Welt hinaus, auch
VoIP-Telefonieren ist damit möglich. Die

are gone, because they didn’t fit into
Dave’s high standard of quality.
Old rituals are the group photo shooting
on the Monday evening, the fashion show
at the Blue Corner shop (where the group
photos can be ordered), on Wednesday
the open house for guests from other
camping areas with a barbecue, and on the
Friday the stage is open for entertainment
by the callers and dancers.
During the two weeks of dancing the
method of teaching changed from “Crash
course” to “Cram course”, meaning that
later on the figures were not called until
their definition had been explained at least
once.
Incidentally, the concept of 4 ¾ squares
for the class weeks, 3 couples more than a
complete new fifth square, has the advan-
tage that any new figure definition will be
explained again after dancers have
swapped around.
Although I have been dancing for 30 years
I learnt a new call: “Find water” after
every third “parliament say thank you”.
This reminds the dancers not to forget to
care about their body fitness after all the
excitement for dancing.
Travelling towards Öland
Travelling towards Bödabaden most
people go by car, some with their included
or extended sleeping facility (caravan or
trailer).
I chose this third time again to travel by
train.
When the summer schedule for the Swed-
ish public transportation comes into force
on June 17
th
, there is an ideal connection
by train and coach right to the front steps
of the dance resort:

Geblieben sind der Fototermin für das
Gruppenfoto, die Modeschau am Montag-
abend, am Dienstag der Ausflug in den Blue
Corner Laden (mit Fotobestellung), am
Mittwoch der Tag der offenen Tür für
andere Camping-Urlauber mit Grill. Am
Freitag steht die Bühne den Tänzern und
Callern zur eigenen Unterhaltung zur Ver-
fügung.
Im Laufe der zwei Wochen Tanzen änderte
sich der Lehrstil vom „Crash Kurs“ zu
„Cram Kurs“, sodass jede Figur später erst
dann getanzt wurde, nachdem ihre Defini-
tion mindestens einmal erläutert worden
war.
Apropos, das Konzept von 4 ¾ Squares
für die Class-Wochen, 3 Paare mehr als ein
ganz neuer fünfter Square, hat den Vorteil,
dass nach jedem Tip die pausierenden Tän-
zer einwechseln – und die Figuren nochmal
erklärt werden.
Obwohl ich schon seit fast 30 Jahren tanze,
habe ich hier einen neuen Call gelernt:
„Find Water“ heißt es nach jedem 3. „par-
liament say thank you“. Damit sollen die
Tänzer vor lauter Tanzbegeisterung nicht
vergessen, ihre Kondition zu erhalten.
Anreise nach Öland
Anreisen nach Bödabaden werden die
meisten mit Auto, manche sogar mit ein-
bzw. angebauter Schlafkoje (Camper oder
Wohnwagen).
Ich habe auch bei diesem dritten Besuch
die Bahnfahrt gewählt.
Wenn der Sommerfahrplan für schwedi-
sche Bahnen und Busse ab 17. Juni in Kraft
tritt, kann man sich ideal mit Bahn und Bus
bis vor die Haustüre fahren lassen:

The night train from Munich is the
EN482, from Basel the CNL472, and
from Hagen Hbf (via Cologne) the
NZ41449.
Because the first Welcome Dance on the
Saturday starts at 6:30 pm you will be on
time with the first train connection. In
case of a delay of the night train or if you
wish to do a 3 hours’ sight-seeing walk
around Copenhagen you will still be able
to dance the second half after the tea
break.
The “Sparticket” reservation for sleeping
bunks in the night trains can be ordered 6
months in advance and is then as cheap as
49 €. The return ticket can only be or-
dered 4 months in advance in order to
give the tourists going to Germany a
chance for the bargain.

The return journey starts at 8:20 am by
bus from the dance resort to Kalmar, the
train departs for Copenhagen just half an
hour later and arrives at 2:30 pm. The
night train starts at 6.53 pm for Germany,
and therefore you have another chance of
3.5 hours for sight-seeing around Den-
mark’s capital.
Whoever flies in via Copenhagen airport
can continue using the above listed trains,
leaving ca. 10 minutes after the main sta-
tion timing.

Der Nachtzug EN482 heißt von Basel
CNL 472, von Hagen Hbf (über Köln) NZ

Weil der erste Tanz am Samstag um 18:30
beginnt, ist man mit der ersten Zugverbin-
dung pünktlich vor Ort. Aber im Falle eine
Nachtzugverspätung bzw. kleiner Besich-
tungstour in Kopenhagen von drei Stunden
kann die zweite Hälfte nach der Teepause
auch noch mitgetanzt werden.
Spartickets für die Liegewagenplätze der
Nachtzüge können schon 6 Monate im
Voraus gebucht und für 49 € ergattert wer-
den. Das Rückfahrt-Ticket kann aber nur 4
Monaten im Voraus gebucht werden, zum
Heimvorteil der Touristen nach Deutsch-
land.

Die Rückreise beginnt dann entsprechend
um 8:20 mit dem Bus bis Kalmar, nach ei-
ner halben Stunde weiter um 11:03 nach
Kopenhagen, an um 14:30. Der Nachtzug
startet um 18:53. Also nochmal eine Gele-
genheit von ca. 3,5 Stunden, Dänemarks
Hauptstadt zu erkunden.
Wer am Flughafen Kopenhagen landet
nimmt am besten auch oben aufgelistete
Züge, die dort ca. 10 Minuten nach Ab-
fahrt vom Hauptbahnhof Kopenhagen
durchfahren.
Die dritte Möglichkeit anzureisen wäre per
Flugzeug nach Stockholm und dann mit
dem Silverlinje Bus auch bis vor die Haus-
türe nach nur 7 Stunden. Der Bus fährt im

via Stockholm airport and then with the
Silverlinje coach, which also stops right on
the parking lot of the Dance resort after a
journey of 7 hours. In summer the buses
run three times a day including Saturdays.

The net cost as a thumb rule:
1. Munich to Copenhagen 49 € p.p.
2. Copenhagen to Kalmar ca. 49 €
3. Bus Kalmar to Bödabaden ca. 9 €,
therefore for early bookers a total of ca.
110 € each way and you arrive well rested.
Looking forward to 2008
For the upcoming year 2008 Dave has al-
most finished the new dance schedule and
he will publish it soon. There will again be
discounts available to early bookers, but a
new system. The dance level will have a
new sequence, so let’s be curious for news
from Bödabaden.

Für das Jahr 2008 hat Dave den Termin-
plan schon fast fertig und wird ihn bald

batte geben, aber nach einem neuen Sys-
tem. Die Anordnung der Tanzlevel wird
neu gestaltet, also lasst uns gespannt sein
auf Neues aus Bödabaden.
Ich kann nur jedem empfehlen, es lohnt
sich in Bödabaden zu tanzen!
