European Convention 2008 in Hochheim am Main

We made it! Katharina’s board report
starts in a similar way in this issue and I
felt just the same when I finally was able
to bring the layout for the European
Convention program to the print shop –
just in time for distribution to the inter-
national audience of the iPAC in Barm-
stedt and as a supplement for all clubs
and subscribers in this issue.
“European Convention – what does
that actually mean?” Some of you
might ask that haven’t been Square
Dancers for very long.
10 years ago the EAASDC board had
the idea to call an event into being for all
European dancers. We got together with
the umbrella organisations of the square
dance clubs in England, Denmark, Swe-
den and The Netherlands and agreed to
stage this event every 2 years by each of
the participating organizations in rota-
tion. Each country nominates Callers
and Cuers and in each hall preferably
only one program will be danced with
callers alternating every hour. Depending
on one’s preferences and dancing ability
one can choose to either stick with one
program and listen to various interna-
tional callers or to follow their favorite
caller thru the halls and programs.
The first Convention at the end of Au-
gust 1997 also took place in Hochheim
and was a big success: more than 2,000
dancers participated and had a marvel-
lous weekend. Conventions with almost
the same number of dancers followed in
2000 in Helsingborg (Sweden), 2002 in
Copenhagen (Denmark), 2006 in Hemel
Hempstead (England). The Convention
scheduled for 2004 in The Netherlands
unfortunately had to be cancelled.
Es ist geschafft! So ähnlich beginnt Katha-
rinas Board-Report in diesem Heft, und so
ging es auch mir, als ich die Druckvorlagen
für das Programmheft der European Con-
vention endlich auf den Weg zur Druckerei
bringen konnte – rechtzeitig zur Verteilung
an das internationale Publikum der iPAC in
Barmstedt und zum Beilegen in dieses Heft
für alle Clubs und Abonnenten.
„European Convention – was ist das
eigentlich?“ werden sich viele fragen, die
noch nicht lange beim Square Dance sind.
Vor 10 Jahren kam im EAASDC Board die
Idee auf, eine Veranstaltung für alle europä-
ischen Tänzer ins Leben zu rufen. Man tat
sich mit den Dachverbänden der Square-
Dance-Clubs in England, Dänemark, Schwe-
den und den Niederlanden zusammen und
vereinbarte, diese Veranstaltung im Wechsel
von den beteiligten Organisationen alle zwei
Jahre auszurichten. Von jedem Land werden
Caller und Cuer benannt und in jeder Halle
wird möglichst nur ein Programm durchge-
hend bei stündlichem Callerwechsel getanzt.
Je nach Lust und Tanzvermögen kann man
daher entweder in einem Programm ver-
schiedene internationale Caller hören oder
man zieht mit seinem Lieblingscaller durch
die Hallen und Programme.
Die erste Convention fand Ende August
1997 ebenfalls in Hochheim statt und war
ein großer Erfolg: es kamen über 2000 Tän-
zer und erlebten ein tolles Wochenende. Es
folgten ähnlich gut besuchte Conventions
2000 in Helsingborg (Schweden), 2002 in
Kopenhagen (Dänemark) und 2006 in
Hemel Hempstead (England). Die für 2004
in den Niederlanden geplante musste leider
abgesagt werden.
Mitte letzten Jahres wurde ein Organisa-
tions-Team gebildet, das die nächste Con-

In the middle of last year an organiza-
tion team was formed to prepare the
next Convention. We rented halls, got
the official approvals, organized a shuttle
service between the halls, organized a
catering service, engaged Callers and
Cuers and most importantly created a
program that hopefully provides suffi-
cient dancing time for everybody. 100
hours of dancing in 5 halls will be
offered. 12 Callers and 6 Cuers will do
their best so we will have a lot of fun
while dancing.
Naturally such an event cannot be exe-
cuted by the EAASDC board alone. We
therefore are grateful that so many clubs
in Hochheim’s neighborhood are willing
to help decorating the halls but most of
all are willing to help out during the
Convention.
To enable a better planning, a pre-
registration with reduced entrance fees is
available. Please start making use of it
early. You will find the registration form
in the Convention program. I hope that
I will be able to also provide the registra-
tion form on the website when this
Bulletin has been published.
A request to all Club boards: We will
have a booth during the Fall Round Up
where you can get additional programs
and where your questions can be
answered.
Please distribute the programs among
the dancers so that we can celebrate to-
gether again a really big international
event. The organization team will do its
best to make it a big success but what
would a Convention be without dancers?
We hope to meet a lot of you there!

tet, die behördlichen Genehmigungen ein-
geholt, ein Pendelbusverkehr zwischen den
Hallen vorbereitet, für die Verpflegung
gesorgt, Caller und Cuer engagiert und vor
allem das Programm aufgestellt, von dem
wir hoffen, dass jeder ausreichend Tanzzeit
für sich findet. Es wird insgesamt 100 Stun-
den Tanz in 5 Hallen geboten. 12 Caller und
6 Cuer werden ihr Bestes geben, uns Allen
viel Spaß am Tanzen zu bereiten.
Natürlich kann eine solche Veranstaltung
nicht allein vom EAASDC-Board durchge-
führt werden. Wir sind daher dankbar, dass
sich viele Clubs aus der Umgebung von
Hochheim bereit erklärt haben, bei der
Dekoration der Hallen, vor allem aber bei
der Betreuung während der Convention mit-
zuhelfen.
Um etwas besser planen zu können, gibt es
eine Voranmeldung zu reduzierten Eintritts-
preisen. Macht bitte frühzeitig und zahlreich
Gebrauch davon! Das Anmeldeformular
findet ihr im Programmheft. Ich hoffe, dass
ich bis zum Erscheinen dieses Bulletins auch
die Anmeldung über Internet fertig habe,
wenn nicht: sie ist mit Hochdruck in Arbeit.
Eine Bitte an die Clubvorstände: am Fall
Round Up wird es einen Info-Stand geben,
an dem ihr weitere Programmhefte erhalten
könnt und an dem euch auch Fragen beant-
wortet werden können.
Verteilt die Hefte an die Tänzer in euren
Clubs, damit wir gemeinsam wieder ein
wirklich großes internationales Fest feiern
können. Das Organisations-Team gibt sich
große Mühe, dass es ein Erfolg wird, aber
was wäre eine Convention ohne Tänzer? Wir
hoffen darauf, möglichst viele von euch dort
zu treffen!
