Barmstedt is 20 miles north west of Hamburg which is in northern Germany. It is a town of around 12,000 and the square dancers added another 940. Dancing was in two areas with 4 halls in one (C1, C2, C3a, and C3b) and 3 in the other (Plus, A1, and A2). You could walk from one area to the other in about 15 minutes. Each hall was separate from the next so there were no sound problems. 

In addition to the normal dancing, there was a Plus trail-in dance on Thursday, and after party with line dancing on Friday, and an after party with a Dixieland Jazz Band on Saturday. There was also a demo dance in the town square on Sunday morning after which we all grabbed one of the spectators and got into a giant circle for some do sa do, up to the middle with a whoop and a holler, allemende left and a giant right and left grand. At this dance the instruction and some of the calls were given in German so I had to listen and watch to see what to do. At the regular dancing, the introductions are in German and English and all the calling is in English. 

Some people stayed in local hotels. There were also a lot of motor homes, campers, camping, youth hostels, and even the ability to sleep in the C1 hall (a gym with mats and showers). The dance fee was around $45 (per person) with under 18 half price. I danced with several in the 14 to 20 age range, usually present with the rest of their family. 

In case people are interested (I was), I obtained the breakdown (perhaps there is a better word :-) by country and by dance program:

Barmstedt liegt 30km nördlich von Hamburg. Es ist eine kleine Stadt von ca. 12.000 Einwohnern und die Square Dancer erhöhten diese Zahl um 940. Getanzt wurde auf zwei Geländen mit vier Hallen (C1, C2, C3a und C3b) auf dem einen und drei Hallen (Plus, A1 und A2) auf dem anderen. Man konnte in 15 Minuten von einem Bereich zum anderen laufen. Jede Halle war baulich getrennt, so daß es keine akustischen Beeinträchtigungen gab. 

Zusätzlich zum normalen Tanz, gab es einen Plus-Trail-in-Tanz am Donnerstag, eine Afterparty mit Line Dance am Freitag und eine Afterparty mit Dixieland Jazz-Band am Samstag. Am Sonntagvormittag gab es eine Demo auf dem Marktplatz, bei der wir uns alle einen der Zuschauer griffen und in einem großen Kreis einige Do-Sa-Do, Up to the Middle and Back, Allemande Left und einen riesigen Right and Left Grand machten. Bei diesem Tanz wurden die Erläuterungen und einige der Calls auf Deutsch gegeben, so daß ich hören und hinsehen mußte, um zu wissen, was zu tun ist. An den normalen Tanzveranstaltungen wurden die einleitenden Worte in Deutsch und Englisch gesprochen, das Callen war nur Englisch. 

Einige Leute wohnten in Hotels. Es gab aber auch eine Menge Wohnmobile, Wohnwagen, Zelte, Jugendherbergen und auch die Möglichkeit, in der C1-Halle (einer Turnhalle mit Matten und Duschen) zu schlafen. Der Eintritt betrug 58,- DM, halber Preis für Jugendliche. Ich tanzte mit einigen etwa 14- bis 20-jährigen, die üblicherweise mit ihren Familien da waren. 
 Für den Fall, dass jemand daran interessiert ist (ich war es), habe ich hier eine Statistik nach Land und Tanzprogramm: 

I was able to dance 1/2 of a C1 dance, all of the Plus trail-in dance, some A2, some Plus, a C3B tip, and a C2 tip. In all cases I was able to quickly find a partner and get in a square. 

I really enjoyed dancing with the dancers from the Czech Republic. They were all young and enthusiastic. I danced with some in Plus and A2, and some in C1. They reminded me of the group I used to dance with back in college. They had a good square dance sense of humor, and were always asking questions and wanting to learn more. They had invented some calls and had some interesting styling on certain calls. I showed them some of what we do back home and they show me the same.  

This was the 4th iPAC (it happens every other year) and the first time dancers traveled all the way from Japan. They were specially introduced at the grand march, and I danced with 2 of them as partners at Plus. 

I also asked a lady to dance and it ended up she had just finished Plus lessons and was very nervous. I told her not to worry and we had a great tip. 

I hope I have been able to convey some of my enthusiasm for this fine weekend. It might seem like a long way to go for Square dancing, but it was sure a lot of fun. In general, language was not a problem since English seems to be the common language among all the people.

Ich konnte die Hälfte einer C1-Session, den ganzen Plus-Trail-in-Tanz, einige A2- und Plus-Tips, einen C3B- und einen C2-Tip tanzen. In allen Fällen konnte ich schnell eine Partnerin finden und mich in einen Square stellen. 

Es hat mir wirklich Spaß gemacht, mit den tschechischen Tänzern zu tanzen. Sie waren alle jung und enthusiastisch. Ich tanzte mit einigen Plus und A2, mit anderen C1. Sie erinnerten mich an eine Gruppe, mit der ich damals im College tanzte. Sie hatten einen gesunden Square Dance Humor und waren dauernd am Fragen und wollten mehr lernen. Sie hatten einige Calls erfunden und einen bemerkenswerten Tanzstil bei einigen Calls. Ich zeigte ihnen einiges, was wir bei uns zuhause machen und sie mir ebenso. 

Dies war die vierte iPAC (sie findet alle zwei Jahre statt) und zum ersten Mal kamen Tänzer aus Japan dorthin. Sie wurden beim Grand March eigens vorgestellt und ich tanzte mit zweien von ihnen als Partner Plus. 

Ich forderte auch eine Frau zum Tanzen auf, bei der sich herausstellte, dass sie grade die Plus-Class beendet hatte. Sie war deshalb sehr aufgeregt. Ich sagte ihr, sie solle sich keine Sorgen machen und wir hatten einen großartigen Tip. 

Ich hoffe, ich bin in der Lage, etwas von meiner Begeisterung für dieses schöne Wochenende rüberzubringen. Es sieht zwar nach einer langen Reise (aus Sicht USA - Ed.) nur um Square Dance zu tanzen aus, aber es hat ganz gewiss eine Menge Spaß gemacht. Im allgemeinen gab es keine Sprachprobleme, da Englisch die gemeinsame Sprache all dieser Leute zu sein schien. 

Es würde mich freuen, auch von anderen zu hören, die da waren.
