Whatever Happened to the Friendship Song

Was passierte mit dem "Friendship"-Lied?

When we first started square dancing, which was really not so long ago, we learned the Friendship Song - in German and English - and it was sung regularly at the end of our club nights. And we heard it frequently when visiting other clubs. But not any more!

Today, newer dancers look at you blankly when you mention the Friendship Ring. Older dancers just shrug their shoulders. Isn't it time to revive this wonderful tradition? Students could be asked to learn the words, and ‘tested' on them at their Graduation. If they can truly sing with feeling the words of the Friendship Song, then they must surely be ready to join the world of Square Dance. And why not close our club nights, Specials and Jamborees in the same way?

What better way to end an evening of fun and friendship than by joining in one large circle, linking our arms together, and singing in harmony the sentiments which are so much a part of our hobby:

Let's all join hands in friendship
for everyone to see.
Remember that a stranger
is just a friend to be.
Hold fast your hands in friendship
for many years to come,
this Friendship Ring
will always bring
good fun for everyone

Maybe for some of us, this will put things into perspective, and remind us of what really drew us to Square Dancing in the first place!

Als wir vor nicht allzulanger Zeit mit dem Square Dance begannen, lernten wir auch das "Friendship"-Lied - in Deutsch und Englisch -‚ das regelmäßig am Ende unseres Clubabends gesungen wurde. Wir hörten es auch oft, wenn wir andere Clubs besuchten, jetzt aber überhaupt nicht mehr!

Heutzutage sehen Dich neuere Tänzer verdutzt an, wenn Du den "Friendship Ring" erwähnst, ältere Tänzer zucken nur mit den Schultern. Sollten wir nicht diesen wundervollen Brauch wiederbeleben? Students könnten aufgefordert werden, den Text zu lernen und bei ihrer Graduation damit "geprüft" werden. Wenn sie den Text des "Friendship Ring" aufrichtig mit Gefühl singen können, dann sind sie sicher auch so weit, in die Square-Dance-Welt einzutreten. Warum beenden wir nicht auch unsere Clubabende, Specials und Jamborees auf diese Art?

Gibt es eine bessere Art, einen Abend voller Spaß und Freundschaft zu beschließen, als sich in einem großen Kreis zu versammeln, die Arme miteinander zu verschränken und gemeinsam die Verse zu singen, die doch so sehr Teil unseres Hobbys sind:

Reicht Euch die Hand in Freundschaft,
ein jeder sieht es dann,
dass auch für Dich ein Fremder
der beste Freund sein kann!
Haltet die Hände in Freundschaft
für lange, lange Zeit,
dass dieser Ring
Euch immer bring
viel Spaß und auch viel Freud' !

Vielleicht rückt das manchem von uns die Dinge in den richtigen Blickwinkel und erinnert uns an das, was uns vor allem am Square Dance anzieht!
