EAASDC Bulletin 11/97

Summer is over and everywhere Open Houses are being held in order to win new fans over to our hobby and to demonstrate how much fun dancing together can be. Active help of all 'old hands' is necessary: publicity for friends and acquaintances, an especially warm welcome on the first evenings, and last but not least enduring support of the class by angels. To the last point we will give some advice in the next issue and hope that last year's article (12/96) is still in your mind. The work on the 'graduation issue' is going ahead well, but we are still waiting for your reservations.

We want to come gradually to an end of the topic 'dress code' with a collection of Round Dancers' opinions. Meanwhile we have already comments on some letters on our table, but we will print them bit by bit only, to have room for other topics too.

By the way: the thin response on the theme 'English' surprised us a little. We know a lot of dancers who have difficulty in following solely English explanations. After all it is no disgrace not to be able to do something, if you have never had the chance to learn it. But if there is an opportunity to learn, we should make use of it: we have been promised an article on the theme 'English for Square Dancers' - we are very curious.

We always are glad to hear that also some Not-Square-Dancers are busy Bulletin readers. Some are even very careful readers and an especially careful one has found something which slipped through during the final fitting. If you have a September issue on hand, please turn to page 66. There is written quite small - you will almost need a magnifying glass - that at the Bavarian Stompers Special the badge and a plateful of goulash soup cost 18,-- DM. Unfortunately this reader is an extremely correct employee of the German postal service who complained that this constitutes a "recommendation of a product or service", which is not allowed in a 'Büchersendung'. He refused further delivery unless we would send DM 1,50 per issue excess postage for the remaining 56 letters. One of his colleagues was bothered by the fact that on the airmail letters under the label 'Imprime a taxe reduite' the imprint 'Büchersendung' peeped out and demanded '1400 Dpf' excess postage per issue. We never have understood why this transport company makes its prices on account of the content and not of dimension or weight like all others. We use these nuisances as an opportunity to rummage through the 'scale of charges jungle'. A look at the price list and remembering the friendly tip a dancer gave us some time ago, drew our attention to the 'Postvertriebsstück'. Unfortunately the mailing instructions are hard to understand and so we called the 'Pressevertriebszentrum'. An exceedingly kind woman gave us initial information, promised to send additional material and asked, what we wanted to dispatch. After the vague description 'club newspaper for American folk dance' she said: "Oh, Square Dance - I know it quite well, I also danced some years ago." This shows once more that our hobby is more popular than we believe sometimes.

Result: we will change over the dispatch. As this is combined with considerable changes of the program printing the labels, probably not until the turn of the year. We will report about the adjustments involved later on.

There is a lot to do . . ., but this will not keep us away from dancing completely.

der Sommer ist vorbei und überall beginnen jetzt wieder die "Open Houses", um neue Anhänger für unser Hobby zu werben und ihnen zu zeigen, wieviel Spaß gemeinsames Tanzen macht. Tatkräftige Mithilfe aller 'alten Hasen' ist angesagt: Werbung bei Freunden und Bekannten, ein besonders herzlicher Empfang an den ersten Abenden und nicht zuletzt ausdauernde Unterstützung der Classes durch Angel. Wir werden zum letzten Thema im nächsten Heft wieder einige gute Ratschläge geben und hoffen, der letztjährige Artikel (12/96) ist Euch noch in Erinnerung. Die Arbeit an der 'Graduation-Ausgabe' des Bulletins geht auch voran, nur Eure Reservierungen dafür lassen noch auf sich warten.

Mit einer Sammlung von Meinungen zur Kleidung von Round Dancern wollen wir das Thema 'Kleiderordnung' langsam ausklingen lassen. Es liegen inzwischen zwar schon Stellungnahmen zu Aussagen einiger Briefschreiber auf unserem Tisch, wir werden sie aber nur allmählich abdrucken, um auch Raum für andere Themen zu haben.

Apropos: die spärliche Reaktion auf das Thema 'Englisch' hat uns doch etwas verwundert. Wir kennen eine Reihe von Tänzern, die große Schwierigkeiten bei ausschließlich englischen Erläuterungen haben. Es ist doch keine Schande, etwas nicht zu können, was man zu Lernen vielleicht nie Gelegenheit hatte; wenn sich eine Gelegenheit zum Lernen ergibt, sollte man sie aber auch nutzen: uns wurde ein Artikel zum Thema 'Englisch für Square Dancer' angekündigt - wir sind gespannt.

Ergebnis: wir werden den Versand umstellen. Da dies mit erheblichen Änderungen der Programme für den Etikettendruck verbunden ist, wahrscheinlich erst zum Jahreswechsel. Über die damit verbundenen Umstellungen werden wir noch berichten.

Es gibt viel zu tun . . ., aber vom Tanzen lassen wir uns nicht völlig abhalten!
