Square Dance going down in the USA?

Evaluation of data from the National Square Dance Directory 1997

What I noticed first of all: the National Square Dance Directory 1997 had obviously less pages than the 1996 edition, only 154 compared to 186 in 1996, advertisements included. I thought this was due to the decline of Square Dancing and of clubs in the USA. This impression was confirmed on a recent trip to Trenton, New Jersey (not very far from famous Princeton University) were I stayed about three months ago.

During a previous trip to the same place about two years ago, I would have had the opportunity of spending every evening of the week as guest of one of the various clubs in this region. But two years later I was only able to do this once a week, because all the other clubs had had to close in the meantime since they lacked young members, particularly young dancers. In order to investigate this development more closely, I began to count the clubs named in the Directory and arranged them according to the state they are situated in. The corresponding tables are shown below:

Was mir als erstes auffiel: das National Square Dance Directory 1997 hat gegen-über der Ausgabe 1996 nicht unbeträchtlich an Umfang abgenommen (1996: 186 Seiten, 1997: 154 Seiten, jeweils einschließlich Werbung). Vermutlich hängt das mit der derzeit rückläufigen Tendenz beim Square Dance in den USA und der Anzahl der Clubs zusammen,dachte ich. Diese Vermutung bestätigte sich mir bei einer Reise vor etwa 3 Monaten nach Trenton, New Jersey (ganz in der Nahe der bekannten Princeton University). Wo ich vor etwa 2 Jahren noch an jedem Abend der Woche als Gast bei einem der Clubs der Gegend hätte tanzen können, bestand nun nur noch an einem Abend der Woche diese Möglichkeit. Die anderen Clubs sind zwischenzeitlich eingegangen mangels Nachwuchs vor allem bei Tänzern. Um der Sache genauer auf den Grund zu gehen, begann ich deshalb mit dem Auszählen der im Directory nach US-Bundesstaaten aufgelisteten Clubs, wobei sich folgendes Bild zeigte:

The Directory does certainly not mention all clubs of the USA, but apart from the classical Square Dance clubs, clubs doing a like type of dancing are listed as well. The tendency of the data is only too obvious: the number of clubs in the USA is declining. There is an average loss of about 11% compared to the previous year.

An interesting fact: a total of 51 states is taken into account but the number of clubs has only increased in six of them. While nothing seemed to have change in Wyoming, the majority of states suffered considerable decrease. Neglecting the Washington DC data the decline is strongest in Minnesota.

California remained the state with the highest number of clubs, followed by Texas and Florida.

The number of advertisements depends on the number of clubs, and it fell from 206 in 1996 to 180 in 1997.

Although the development in the USA is rather sad, it might still serve as a motivation for strengthening our effort in order to prevent the same from happening in Europe.

Sicherlich gibt es in den USA mehr Glubs, als im "Directory" gelistet sind, und es sind neben den reinen Square Dance-Clubs auch andere artverwandte In der Tabelle enthalten. Die Tendenz ist aber eindeutig: die Zahl der Clubs in den USA nahm ab; innerhalb eines Jahres im Durchschnitt um etwa 11 %.

Interessant: Bei den 51 US-Bundesstaaten ergaben sich nur in 6 Staaten geringfügige Steigerungen, nur Wyoming blieb gleich, während beim großen Rest teilweise beträchtliche Abnahmen zu verzeichnen sind. Den stärksten Rückgang hat Minnesota zu verzeichnen, sieht man einmal von Washington, DC ab.

Der Staat mit den meisten Clubs war und ist übrigens California, gefolgt von Texas und Florida.

Entsprechend dem Rückgang der Clubzahlen verringerte sich folglich auch die Anzah! der Annoncen im "Directory" von 206 (1996) auf 180 (1997).

So bedauerlich die Entwicklung in den USA auch sein mag: für uns Europäer sollte sie Ansporn sein, darauf hinzuwirken, es bei uns nicht so weit kommen zu lassen.
