I am an American reading your bulletin with much interest! Today I read about Square Dance dress and I see that talk is the same for all of us.

I am one that has a problem with the petticoat rule and even though I am in the minority right now I think we are on the way to a change. More and more ladies are dressing in prairie skirts (the longer, western skirts) and some clubs have made that their official club dress now (that is where all the club members have the same type of dress and shirts). I am happy to see such changes!

(20 years ago)I was taught that "proper square dance attire" was women in loose-fitting dresses/skirts, men in long sleeves and low-heeled shoes for all. That is all I was ever taught about what was "proper" but the pressure is to buy expensive petticoats and expensive dresses that fit the expensive petticoats.

I just cannot understand why a folk dance should be expensive for the "folks". Maybe if we were performing all the time for audiences then it would be right to have expensive costumes. In the old days people wore what they wore to church, they did not buy special clothes that sat in the closet for only dancing.

I can see why women should not wear pants or dresses that show their underwear but this is different than being so hard on exactly what we should wear. I was surprised to see that jeans is not a good thing for the men. Here the men do wear jeans but they are not the same jeans as they wear to work.

I hope you make something that works for you. There is a need for some rules so that people do not come sloppy (slovenly) but not so hard that ladies cannot dance if they do not wish to spend good money on a petticoat that can only be worn to a square dance. Petticoats are very expensive here and I would think that they are even more expensive for you. That is too much money for an activity that is about friendship and good times.

Ich bin Amerikanerin und lese Euer Bulletin mit großem Interesse. Heute las ich den Artikel über Square Dance Kleidung und sehe, daß wir alle das gleiche Thema haben.

Ich bin eine von denen, die Schwierigkeiten mit der "Petticoat-Regel" haben, aber obwohl ich glaube, daß ich zur Zeit noch zur Minderheit gehöre, denke ich doch, daß wir auf dem Weg zu einer Änderung sind: Mehr und mehr Frauen kleiden sich in "Prärie-Röcke" (die längeren "Western"-Röcke) und manche Clubs haben das jetzt zu ihrer offiziellen Clubkleidung gemacht (das sind die, die alle in der gleichen Art gekleidet sind). Ich sehe diese Änderungen mit Freude!

Mir wurde (vor 20 Jahren) beigebracht, daß "korrekte Square Dance Kleidung" bedeutet: Frauen in weiten Kleidern/Röcken, Männer mit langen Ärmeln und flache Schuhe für alle. Das war alles, was mir jemals als "korrekt" beigebracht wurde, aber man wird dazu gedrängt, teure Petticoats zu kaufen und teure Kleider, die zu den teuren Petticoats passen.

Ich kann nicht verstehen, warum ein "Volkstanz" so teuer für das "Volk" sein muß. Wenn wir die ganze Zeit vor Zuschauern tanzen würden, wäre es vielleicht richtig, teure Kostüme zu tragen. In den alten Zeiten trugen die Leute das, was sie auch zum Kirchgang anzogen, sie hatten keine spezielle Kleidung, die nur zum Tanzen im Schrank hing.

Ich sehe ein, daß Frauen keine Hosen tragen sollten oder durchsichtige Kleidung, aber diese Forderung unterscheidet sich von einer starren Kleiderordnung. Ich war überrascht, daß Jeans für Männer unpassend sein sollen. Hier tragen die Männer Jeans, allerdings andere als ihre Arbeitshosen.

Ich hoffe ihr findet einen Kompromiss für Euch. Einige Regeln sind notwendig, damit die Leute nicht schlampig ankommen, aber nicht so starr, daß Frauen nicht tanzen können, wenn sie nicht viel Geld für einen Petticoat ausgeben wollen, der nur zum Tanzen getragen wird. Petticoats sind hier sehr teuer und ich denke, daß sie bei Euch noch teurer sind. Das ist zu teuer für eine Beschäftigung, bei der es um Freundschaft und einen netten Zeitvertreib geht.

So now I ask a very serious question.....

Where can I find the definition / explanation / history that says that what is being worn today is "traditional" and the only version of "proper square dance attire"? If I'm going to change my mind it's going to have to be for more than just the fact that "everyone else does it". Didn't our moms always say to us, "if everybody else jumped off a bridge would you do it too?"

Wo finde ich die Definition / Erläuterung / Geschichte, die mir sagt, daß die Kleidung, die heute getragen wird, "traditionell" und die einzige Art "korrekter Square Dance Kleidung" ist? Wenn ich meine Meinung ändern soll, braucht es mehr als nur die Tatsache, daß "es alle anderen auch machen". Hat uns Mutter nicht immer wieder gesagt, "wenn alle von der Brücke springen würden, würdest Du es dann auch tun?"
