ECTA Clogging Coordinator

here is the announced report about our trip to USA. We started on the Nov. 15 07. 6 dancers of the Smiling Frog Hopper and the Teepott-Clogger started from Bremen to San Francisco. Before the Clogging Convention in Nashville was on the program, we wanted to get to know the country and of course, we wanted to dance, because we finally wanted to adapt the "Rover" to our badge and we succeeded in the end. Our round trip through California, Canyonland, Arizona, Utah and Nevada was really beautiful, but really to short. We were spoilt by the weather: blue sky, sunshine, temperatures about 20^o C accompanied us. Only in Nashville the temperatures was cooler, but that didn't matter. Because we were in Nashville for dancing, and dancing warms us up anyway.

The Opryland-Hotel is a little town of its own. That's why you get a hotelguide at the reception. When we arrived on Tuesday, we were the first there and had enough time to look around and to explore where the convention was going to start. From Wednesday on we clogged. It was apparent, that there were so many kids among the cloggers. Badly enough, there was bad acoustics in the hall, so we had to concentrate strongly to understand the cues.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday were set up for clogging. Everything was offered each level, each dancing style, even "Irish step dancing", a style which made us enthusiastic. Each workshops lasted for 45 Min. and then there was a break of 15 Min. So you didn't have to hustle to change halls or to walk for dinner. Workshops started at 9 a.m. and stopped at 5 p.m.

At p.m. there was a special program and for 'Request Clogging'. On Saturday night they offered a special show 'Rhythm in Shoes', where different groups could demonstrate there abilities. Super!!

On Sunday morning we checked out and left for Atlanta. We wanted to see Tandy Barrett. In 1996 she visited us and also taught Workshops on the ECTA Convention in Darmstadt.

On Dec. 4. 97 we stayed in Nashville. We felt sorry, because this was our final day. In the afternoon our plane would start. First to Detroit and after a change finally to Amsterdam. And that was good so, because on the next day our Winter Jamboree would start in Bammental.

3 out of 6 America tourists went on the road again. Despite of our tiredness we arrived there on time with out any complications. I could step right into the meeting and the others could care about rooming and then also were able to dance.

The clogging workshops on Saturday were highly frequented. We had a lot of spectators standing around and watching us. Although it's nice to have spectators there, who show interest, it often was hard for us, to understand the cues, because of the noise. During a workshop the music is set slowly, and then the beats can hardly be heard, but we have to stay in the tact. And yet we wish for the future, that many people will watch us at the workshops and even find interest in Clogging.

Bevor die Clogging Convention in Nashville auf dem Programm stand, wollten wir uns etwas das Land anschauen und tanzen natürlich auch, schließlich wollten wir alle den "Rover" an unser Badge hängen. Das haben wir auch geschafft. Unsere Rundreise durch Kalifornien, Canyonland, Arizona, Utah und Nevada war sehr schön, aber nach einhelliger Meinung zu kurz. Wettermäßig sind wir sehr verwöhnt worden, blauer Himmel, Sonnenschein und Temperaturen um 20 Grad waren unsere ständigen Begleiter. Einzig Nashville hatte etwas kühlere Temperaturen zu bieten, aber das war uns egal. Wir waren zum Tanzen in Nashville und dabei sollte uns ganz schön warm werden.

Das Opryland Hotel ist wie eine kleine Stadt für sich. Es gab nicht ohne Grund an der Rezeption einen Hotelführer. Als wir Dienstags ankamen, waren wir so ziemlich die ersten und konnten uns alles in Ruhe anschauen und auskundschaften, wo nun die Convention eigentlich stattfand. Ab Mittwochabend wurde gecloggt. Was sofort ins Auge viel, war der hohe Anteil Kinder und Jugendlicher unter den Cloggern. Leider waren die Hallen nicht gut beschallt, man mußte sich gewaltig konzentrieren und oft konnte man die Cues nicht verstehen.

Donnerstag, Freitag und Samstag standen ganz im Zeichen von Clogging. Es wurde alles geboten, jeder Level, jede Tanzart, auch "irish step dancing", ein Tanzstil, der uns alle begeistert hat. Jeder Workshop dauerte 45 Minuten, danach gab es 15 Minuten Pause bis zum nächsten WS. So konnte man ohne Hetze die Hallen wechseln oder mal etwas essen. WS gab es ab 9 Uhr morgens bis 17 Uhr abends. Ab 20 Uhr wurde immer ein Special Programm geboten.

Abends gab es dann immer ein besonderes Programm und/oder "Request Clogging". Am Samstagabend gab es dann eine Special Show, "Rhythm in Shoes", wo verschiedene Gruppen noch einmal alle Register ihres Könnens zogen. Einfach toll!

Sonntagmorgen ging es dann nach dem Auschecken Richtung Atlanta. Wir wollten Tandy Barett besuchen. Sie war 1996 bei uns zu Besuch und hat auch an der ECTA Convention in Darmstadt WS gegeben.

Am 4.12.96 waren wir wieder in Nashville. Unwiderruflich unser letzter Tag. Nachmittags ging unser Flieger. Zuerst nach Detroit und nach Flugzeugwechsel endgültig Richtung Amsterdam. Es war auch gut so, denn am nächsten Tag begann ja die Winterjamboree in Bammental.

Von den 6 Amerikafahrern hatten sich dann 3 auf den Weg gemacht. Trotz vorhandener Müdigkeit sind wir auch ohne Komplikationen einigermaßen pünktlich angekommen. Ich konnte direkt ins Meeting einsteigen und die anderen kümmerten sich ums Quartier und konnten dann auch noch tanzen.

Die Cloggingworkshops am Samstag waren gut besucht. Wir hatten auch viele Zuschauer, die rundum standen und zusahen, wie der Instructor uns "Beine machte". Obwohl wir es immer schön finden, wenn Zuschauer da sind und Interesse zeigen, war es oftmals für uns sehr schwer, die Cues zu verstehen. Bei einem WS wird die Musik sehr langsam gestellt und dann sind die Beats, nach denen wir unseren Takt halten, nur schwer zu verstehen. Wenn sich dann im Umfeld noch unterhalten wird, ist es fast unmöglich, bei dem (zugegeben) lauten Geklapper der Cloggingschuhe auch noch den Instructor zu verstehen. Trotzdem wünschen wir uns auch weiterhin, daß möglichst Viele bei unseren WS zuschauen und sogar selbst Lust auf Clogging bekommen.
