Stockpile leftover pieces and ask other sewers to do the same. When you have a big pile, arrange a patch swap.

For a three-tier skirt, you will need 63 patches, 9 for the top tier, 18 for the middle tier, and 36 for the bottom tier. If you don't have enough patches, make some from white eyelet, or a favorite solid color to fill in.

To determine the size of your patches, first determine the finished length of your skirt. This should be approximately one inch longer than your petticoat. The three tiers of the skirt may be of equal depth, but if the arithmetic suggests unequal sizes, for proper proportions the top tier is the shallow one and the bottom tier is the deep one. The middle tier may be the same as the top, the same as the bottom, or in between.

Make the patches 7½ inches wide, and 7½, 8½ or 9½ inches deep, as needed. Remember, this includes ½-inch seam allowance on all four sides, so measure carefully. Some suggestions for sizes of patches are: for a 19-inch petticoat 7½-inch squares for the top two tiers, and 7½ inches wide by 8½ inches deep for the bottom tier; for a 21-inch petticoat 7½ inches wide by 8½ inches deep for all tiers; for a 23-inch petticoat 7½ by 8½ inches for the top tier and 7½ by 9½ for the bottom two tiers.

Spread out the patches in rows, and arrange them to suit you, nine in the top tier, 18 in the middle tier, and 36 for the bottom. Sew all side seams but one in each row of patches, making long strips. Gather the 18-patch tier and stitch to the 9-patch piece. Narrowly hem, then gather the 36-patch tier and stitch to the middle one. Now sew up the enter back seam, inserting a zipper. Gather to a waistband in the usual manner, and you are finished.

Sammle Stoffreste, die wenigstens 24 cm im Quadrat groß sind, und bitte auch andere Näherinnen, dasselbe zu tun. Wenn Du einen großen Stapel beisammen hast, verabredet Euch zu einem "Fleckentausch".

Für einen 3-stufigen Rock brauchst Du 63 Flecken, 9 für die oberste, 18 für die mittlere und 36 für die untere Stufe. Wenn Du nicht genügend Flecken hast, nimm einfach einige aus weißem Stoff oder in einer Lieblingsfarbe zum Vervollständigen.

Um die Größe Deiner Flecken festzulegen, bestimme erst die fertige Länge Deines Rockes. Dieser sollte etwa 2,5 cm länger als Dein Petticoat sein. Die drei Stufen des Rockes können dieselbe Höhe haben, aber wenn ungleichmäßige Höhen möglich sind, dann muß die oberste Stufe - wegen geeigneter Proportionen - die schmalere und die unterste Stufe die breitere sein. Die mittlere Stufe kann so groß wie die oberste oder die unterste sein, oder eine dazwischenliegende Größe haben.

Mache die Flecken 19 cm breit und 19 cm, 21,5 cm oder 24 cm hoch, je nachdem, wie Du es brauchst. Denke daran, daß diese Angaben eine 1,25 cm breite Nahtzugabe an allen vier Seiten mit einschließt, messe deshalb sorgfältig. Hier sind einige Vorschläge zu den Größen der Flecken. Bei einem 48 cm langen Petticoat: 19 cm im Quadrat für die beiden oberen Stufen und 19 cm breit und 21,5 cm hoch für die unterste Stufe; bei einem 53 cm langen Petticoat: 19 cm breit und 21,5 cm hoch für alle Stufen; bei einem 58,5 cm langen Petticoat: 19 cm auf 21,5 cm für die oberste Stufe und 19 cm auf 24 cm für die beiden unteren Stufen.

Verteile die Flecken auf die drei Reihen und ordne sie so an, wie es Dir gefällt, 9 für die oberste, 18 für die mittlere und 36 für die unterste Stufe. Nähe alle Seitennähte, bis auf eine, in jeder Reihe zusammen, wobei lange Streifen aus Flecken entstehen. Reihe die 18-Flecken-Stufe ein und steppe sie an das 9-Flecken-Stück, knapp säumen, dann die 36-Flecken-Stufe einreihen und diese an die mittlere Stufe steppen. Jetzt nähe die rückwärtige Naht zusammen, wobei ein Reißverschluß eingenäht wird. Oben in der üblichen Art und Weise zum Bund zusammenfassen und Du bist fertig.
