| I have been dancing Mainstream
for quite a while now. Provided it does not involve too much travelling,
I never miss a Special. I graduated four years ago and since ten years
am living together with my present partner who graduated in 1971. She made
me adopt the Square dancing mentality and way thinking.
I believe that there need not be any discussion about Square Dancing dress or manners. The tradition itself states all requirements very clearly and I think we should just keep to that tradition as one of the necessary conditions in Square dancing. At a famous Special my partner and I meant to open a Square and got in line as the first couple (Pos. 3). We had stood there only for a couple of seconds when two other couples appeared: placing themselves right next to us in position 1 and 3 they opened another Square. I immediately invited them to take part in our Square but did not get any reply. We then remained there for a bit - but it was very crowed and there was absolutely no room for completing our Square. I cannot accept this kind of behaviour - even if it is not caused by a lack of respect but just by carelessness or a lack of knowledge. It is absolutely not in accordance with proper Square dancing manners. Due to my previous experience I think that problems like the above are due to the fact that particularly in Northern Germany there are too many 'would-be callers': because they have been taught dancing(?) by another 'would-be caller' for one or two years they think themselves ready to spread their so-called knowledge among students. Is there nobody who feels responsible for examining a caller's qualifications for the teaching of Square dancing and the traditions that go with it? I am a dancer and am required to pass a particular examination, the Graduation, before I am allowed to dance on club nights or Specials. It seems that all a caller needs to do is reading a list of calls - then he can call himself caller. To be admitted into the ECTA all he has to do is be a nuisance to three callers he is friends with until they sign a letter of recommendation only to not bothered any longer. Square dancing's bad condition is due to this procedure with its lack of responsibility, rules and clearly defined guidelines and. Not the dancers have become worse but incompetent callers who do not know what they are doing and club boards without the proper motivation who better stayed in their marksmen's association - even if this provides less publicity and opportunity to boast with the dancers' skill(?) - have caused the present situation. People with whom the above description is valid and who are somehow "on the wrong track" should not be part of the Square dancing community. I think it would be better if there were a hundred clubs less in Germany - the remaining ones being a place of fun and recreation to dancers and visitors alike and thereby representing what the Friendship Ring symbolises. I ask all of you: Think of ways and means to ensure that only properly qualified people can become teachers - otherwise whole classes of badly taught students will emerge. Seid einiger Zeit bin ich Mainstream-Tänzer
und lasse nach Möglichkeit kein Special aus, das irgendwie für
mich erreichbar ist. Ich hatte vor 4 Jahren meine Graduation und lebe seit
mehr als 10 Jahren mit meiner Partnerin (1971 graduiert) zusammen. Von
ihr habe ich die Square-Dance-Mentalität und die Square-Dance-Denkweise
übernommen.
Ich meine, daß es keine Diskussion über Kleiderordnung und Verhalten im Square Dance zu geben brauchte. Es ist alles traditionell vorgegeben und ich meine, daß es zur Wahrung der Traditionen des Square Dance gehört, diese Rahmenbedingungen zu würdigen und aufrecht zu erhalten. Kürzlich, auf einem bekannten Special stellten meine Partnerin und ich uns als erstes Paar (Pos.3) auf, um einen Square zu eröffnen. Nachdem wir einige Sekunden gestanden hatten, stellten sich zwei Paare direkt neben uns in Positionen 1 und 3 und eröffneten einen weiteren Square. Auf meine sofort gestellte Frage, ob sie sich an unserem Square beteiligen wollen, erhielt ich keine Reaktion. Wir sind dort noch kurz stehen geblieben, aber das Umfeld war so besetzt, daß wir beim besten Willen keinen Platz mehr gehabt hätten, unseren Square aufzufüllen. Diese Verhaltensweise, und sei sie nicht durch Mißachtung oder Ignoranz, sondern nur durch Unachtsamkeit oder Unwissenheit entstanden, finde ich nicht akzeptabel und vollkommen gegen die Etikette des Square Dance. Das Problem ist, nach eigener Erfahrung, daß es gerade bei uns im Norden Deutschlands zu viele Möchtegern-Caller gibt, die glauben, weil sie vor einem oder zwei Jahren bei einem anderen Möchtegern-Caller tanzen gelernt(?) haben, könnten sie jetzt Students ihre Halbweisheiten nahebringen. Ist denn niemand zuständig dafür, die Caller zu überprüfen, ob sie die Qualifikation zum Lehren von Square Dance, inklusive der Traditionen, haben? Ich, als Tänzer, darf nicht auf einem Special oder Klubabend tanzen, wenn ich es nicht gelernt und meine Prüfung (Graduation) hinter mir habe. Ein Caller braucht scheinbar nur einmal eine Liste der Calls zu lesen und darf sich dann Caller nennen. Um dann in ECTA aufgenommen zu werden, brauchen sie nur drei befreundeten Callern solange auf die Nerven zu gehen, bis die, um ihre Ruhe zu haben, ihre Unterschrift unter die Empfehlung setzen. Durch dieses verantwortungslose, unreglementierte, desinteressierte und schwammige System ohne Richtlinien ist die Misere im Square Dance entstanden. Nicht, weil die Tänzer schlechter geworden sind, sondern weil es zu viele unfähige, ahnungslose Caller und unmotivierte Clubvorstände gibt, die besser im Schützenverein geblieben wären; aber dort konnten sie sich nicht in der Öffentlichkeit produzieren und mit der Leistung(?) der Tänzer protzen. Solche Fehlgeleiteten gehören nicht in die Square Dance Szene. Ich hätte lieber 100 Clubs weniger in Deutschland, aber die restlichen wären für jeden Tänzer und Besucher dann wirklich gemäß dem Friendship-Ring ein Platz der Freude, des Spaßes und der Erholung. Vielleicht überlegt Ihr alle mal, wie es ermöglicht werden kann, daß wirklich nur qualifizierte Personen lehrberechtigt werden und nicht ganze Jahrgänge von Students so schlecht ausgebildet werden, daß von Tanzen und "Fun" für die Mittänzer keine Rede mehr sein kann.
