Introduction
A new trademark, ABC Records, was introduced at the beginning of summer
1998. ABC Records is also the first publishing company of the square dance
records in Eastern Europe. The company resides in Prague, the capital of
the Czech Republic.
A dream comes true
In the beginning, there was a dream. The dream of my best friend Slamák
to publish at least one own square dance record. I admit, I did not believe
it would be possible for a long time. Later on, this idea excited another
friend of mine, the caller-beginner Ondrej Soukup. He began to plan together
with Slamák which kind of songs would be possible to remake into
the square dance form. In the end it was not only one record. Once luck
struck them. They met a musical band that was willing to spend a lot of
hours with music, thinking which instrument is suitable for which passage
and to learn how music for square dancing is made. In the autumn of 1997
we were sitting in the studio listening how the first guitar was being recorded.
I began to believe that the dream might come true.
Chucpe and its consequences for square dancing
Israelis have the word 'chucpe'. Chucpe means, that you begin to do something,
the result of which is, nicely said, very unsure. In spite of it you try
it. Chucpe is when you start to make records, pay money for a studio, but
you are not sure if somebody is going to buy these records from you. Chucpe
is when you decide to sing two singing calls in the couple and one in the
triplet and you have never ever done recording in the studio before. Chucpe
is when you start to send e-mails to people on the other side of the world
who you have never seen and ask them for cooperation. Chucpe is when your
first record is published. Chucpe is about the fact that when you want something
very much and you strongly believe in it, the miracle may happen.
For us the miracle is that our first records are finished and are being
distributed around the world. Several hundreds of pieces have been already
sold. If somebody told us something like this one year ago, we would consider
him to be crazy. Originally we planned to publish only one hundred pieces
per one record and we intended to sell them mainly in Europe. Finally, a
German record businessman, Lothar Weidich, persuaded us to go for the biggest
market in this area - the USA. We received two answers on our inquiries
from distributors. One of them was from Bill Heyman from Supreme Audio.
He was willing to answer all our questions and helped orientate ourselves
in the market that we had known so far only from a consumer point of view.

Lively music
It is worth listening to our music. The band DOMÜNO has been playing
for 15 years and they are very universal. The base of their music is dixieland
and country, similarly to many other bands in our country where country
music and country style have a tradition of around ten years. A lot of instruments
are played lively on our records. In this way music gets variability and
brightness which the electronically made compositions do not have. The solo
instruments include electric guitar, violin, saxophone, and piano. We tried
to make every passage with the different instrument or in a different way.
At this place I would like to thank to all the publishing companies of square
dance music. We did not realize how hard it is until we tried it. When we
decided to produce seven compositions, we took over a very hard task without
knowing it. It is very tiring to listen to drums or sax the whole day. The
recording of the music took us nine days. The computer on which the music
was recorded broke down two times. One night, finally, we were saved from
desperation, when the owner of the studio managed to fix his computer.
Our chance to finish the music would have been probably smaller if we did
not have the band DOMÜNO led by Karel Dohnal for our partners. The
band showed a tremendous flexibility. For example, we found out one and
half month before recording in the studio that thanks to the bad information
flow the band learned completely different singing call than I had in my
mind. It was called ‚San Francisco' as well, but it was very far from
the biggest hit of the sixties. Fortunately the band was very flexible and
they picked up the correct one very quickly. The second time they saved
us with the singing call Sexy Eyes. In this case they created the second
voice line part for Slamák in a flash because as an unison it was
weird. We sang this song together with Slamák and I had to leave
earlier as my wife was due (she gave birth exactly on time, so I managed
it). I left Slamák in the studio to sing until my part. Thanks to
the improvisation of the band and the second voice, Sexy Eyes sounds much
better than we expected and we consider it our liveliest singing call.
I would like to talk about calling for a while. I began calling in 1989,
Slamák in 1990 and Ondrej Soukup in 1994, all of us in the club Country
Farrow Prague. We consider ourselves as good callers (of course we would
be better if we have done it for twenty years), despite that we realize
that our different accent and pronunciation will be our biggest handicap
in the USA. (If you have already bought our record and you do not like our
singing, simply consider our calling as chucpe as well.) We have a different
style of calling; when we learnt how to call, we did not have any callers
to follow, so we developed indepen-dently. Generally, callers in the Czech
and Slovak Republic are focused very technically. We usually call DBD and
we use sight calling mostly. The reason is that the age average of our dancers
is 25 years and they like DBD a lot. In our singing calls we try to warm
our dancers up mainly by creating a good atmo-sphere, by giving an energy
and laughter. Maybe, you will be able to catch the reflection of this attitude
from our records.
ABC in 1999
Let's go back to 'chucpe'. Thanks to chucpe we got further with our dream
than we hoped. We think we should continue once we are established. But
at the moment we prefer not to talk about it further. A man never knows
what will finally come out of the task he is working on. Thanks to chucpe
the outcome of such a task is finally great, beautiful, perfect, but something
really different from the original intention.

Einleitung
Eine neue Marke - "ABC Records" - wurde Anfang Sommer 1998 eingeführt.
ABC Records ist die erste Gesellschaft, die in Osteuropa Square Dance Schallplatten
produziert. Die Gesellschaft hat ihren Sitz in Prag, der Hauptstadt der
Tschechischen Republik

Ein Traum wird wahr
Am Anfang war es ein Traum. Der Traum meines besten Freundes Slamák,
wenigstens eine eigene Square-Dance-Platte zu produzieren. Ich gestehe,
daß ich nicht daran geglaubt hatte, daß das in absehbarer Zeit
möglich würde. Später begeisterte diese Idee einen anderen
meiner Freunde, den Jung-Caller Ondrej Soukup. Er überlegte zusammen
mit Slamák, welche Art Lieder man als Square Dance aufnehmen könnte.
Am Ende war es mehr als eine Platte. Dann lief ihnen das Glück über
den Weg: sie trafen auf eine Musikergruppe, die bereit war, eine Menge Zeit
für die Musik zu investieren, zu überlegen, welches Instrument
für welche Passage passend wäre und zu lernen, wie Musik für
Square Dance gemacht wird. Im Herbst 1997 saßen wir im Studio und
hörten zu, wie die erste Gitarre aufgenommen wurde. Ich begann zu glauben,
daß der Traum wahr werden könnte.
Chuzpe und seine Folgen für den Square Dance
Die Israelis haben das Wort "Chuzpe". Chuzpe bedeutet, daß
Du etwas anfängst, dessen Ergebnis - zurückhaltend ausgedrückt
- ziemlich unsicher ist. Trotzdem versuchst Du es. Chuzpe ist, wenn Du beginnst,
Platten aufzunehmen und Geld für ein Tonstudio zu bezahlen, obwohl
Du unsicher bist, ob Dir irgendjemand diese Platten abkaufen wird. Chuzpe
ist, wenn Du beschließt, zwei Singing Calls im Duett und einen als
Trio aufzunehmen und niemals zuvor in einem Tonstudio warst. Chuzpe ist,
wenn Du beginnst, e-mails an Leute am anderen Ende der Welt zu schicken,
die Du nie gesehen hast, und sie um Unterstützung bittest. Chuzpe ist,
wenn dann Deine erste Platte herauskommt. Chuzpe ist ungefähr die Sache,
daß, wenn Du etwas wirklich willst und fest daran glaubst, daß
dann vielleicht das Wunder geschieht.
Für uns ist es ein Wunder, daß unsere ersten Platten fertig sind
und rund um die Welt verteilt werden. Einige hundert Stück sind bereits
verkauft. Wenn uns das jemand vor einem Jahr gesagt hätte, hätten
wir ihn für verrückt erklärt. Ursprünglich wollten wir
nur 100 Stück von jeder Platte produzieren und sie hauptsächlich
in Europa verkaufen. Aber dann überredete uns ein deutscher Platten-Geschäftsmann,
Lothar Weidich, den größten Markt auf diesem Gebiet anzugehen
- die USA. Wir erhielten zwei Antworten zu unserer Suche nach Vertriebsfirmen.
Eine davon war von Bill Heyman von Supreme Audio. Er beantwortete bereitwillig
alle unsere Fragen und half uns, uns in einem Markt zu orientieren, den
wir bis dahin nur aus Verbrauchersicht kannten.
Lebendige Musik
Unsere Musik ist es wert, angehört zu werden. Die Band DOMÜNO
spielt bereits seit 15 Jahren und ist sehr universell. Basis ihrer Musik
ist Dixieland und Country, ähnlich wie bei vielen anderen Bands in
unserem Land, wo Country-Musik und -Stil eine Tradition von etwa 10 Jahren
haben. Eine Menge Originalinstrumente wird auf unseren Platten gespielt.
Dadurch bekommt die Musik eine Geschmeidigkeit und Brillianz, die die elektronischen
Kompositionen nicht haben. Die Soloinstrumente umfassen elektrische Gitarre,
Geige, Saxophon und Klavier. Wir versuchten, jede Passage mit unterschiedlichen
Instrumenten oder auf verschiedene Weise zu spielen.
An dieser Stelle möchte ich allen Square-Dance-Plattenproduzenten auf
der Welt danken. Wir konnten uns nicht vorstellen, wie schwer es ist, bis
wir es selbst versuchten. Als wir beschlossen sieben Kompositionen zu produzieren,
übernahmen wir, ohne es zu wissen, eine sehr schwere Aufgabe. Es ist
sehr ermüdend, den ganzen Tag nur Trommeln oder Saxophon zu hören.
Die Aufnahmen dauerten neun Tage. Der Computer, mit dem die Musik aufgenommen
wurde, brach zweimal zusammen. In einer Nacht wurden wir endlich aus der
Verzweiflung erlöst, als der Studio-Eigentümer seinen Computer
reparierte.
Unsere Aussichten, die Musik fertigzubekommen wären vermutlich geringer,
wenn wir nicht die Band DOMÜNO, geleitet durch Karel Dohnal, als Partner
hätten. Die Band ist enorm anpassungsfähig. Zum Beispiel fanden
wir eineinhalb Monate vor Aufnahmebeginn heraus, daß wegen des schlechten
Informationsflusses die Band einen völlig anderen Singing Call einstudiert
hatte, als ich im Sinn hatte. Er hieß zwar auch "San Francisco",
war aber weit entfernt von dem größten Hit der 60-er Jahre. Glücklicherweise
war die Band sehr flexibel und hatte den richtigen schnell drauf. Ein zweites
Mal retteten sie uns beim Singing Call "Sexy Eyes". Da schrieben
sie blitzschnell eine zweite Stimmlage für Slamák, weil es einstimmig
gräßlich klang. Wir sangen dieses Lied zusammen und ich mußte
früher gehen, weil meine Frau unser Kind bekam (sie war sehr pünktlich,
so daß ich alles regeln konnte). Ich ließ Slamák im Studio
singen, bis mein Part dran war. Dank der Improvisation der Band und der
zweiten Stimmlage klingt "Sexy Eyes" viel besser als wir erwartet
hatten und wir glauben, es ist unser lebendigster Singing Call.
Ich möchte noch etwas zum Callen sagen. Ich begann damit 1989, Slamák
1990 und Ondrej Soukup 1994, jeder von uns beim Club "Country Farrow"
in Prag. Wir halten uns selbst für gute Caller (natürlich wären
wir noch besser, wenn wir es schon 20 Jahre täten), abgesehen davon
stellen wir fest, daß abweichende Aussprache und Betonung unser größtes
Hemmnis in Amerika sind. (Falls Du schon eine unsere Platten gekauft hast
und unser Singen nicht magst, dann betrachte unser Callen auch als "chuzpe").
Wir haben eine andere Art zu callen: als wir es lernten, hatten wir keine
anderen Caller als Vorbild, daher entwickelten wir uns unabhängig.
Im allgemeinen konzentrieren sich die Caller in der Tschechischen und der
Slowakischen Republik sehr auf die Tanztechnik. Wir callen normalerweise
nach Definition (DBD) und auf Sicht, weil der Altersdurchschnitt unserer
Tänzer bei 25 Jahren liegt und sie DBD sehr mögen. In unseren
Singing Calls versuchen wir, unsere Tänzer in Schwung zu bringen indem
wir eine gute Atmosphäre aus Anspannung und Lachen erzeugen. Vielleicht
spürt Ihr einen Hauch davon auf unseren Platten.
ABC in 1999
Wir wollen auf "Chuzpe" zurückkommen. Dank Chuzpe sind wir
mit unserem Traum weiter gekommen, als wir hofften. Wir denken, wir sollten
weitermachen, nachdem wir nun einmal etabliert sind. Aber im Moment wollen
wir noch nicht weiter darüber reden. Man weiß nie, was letztlich
aus der Aufgabe wird, an der man grade arbeitet. Dank Chuzpe ist das Ergebnis
letztlich großartig, wunderschön, perfekt, aber irgendwie ganz
anders, als ursprünglich geplant.
