You want a stupid question - I have just the one -----

Why do we Square Dance?

- We pay someone to tell us where to go!

- We start in place - walk around – and end up where we started

- some calls ZERO out - you start the call in a spot on the floor and end up in the same spot when you are done

- and we pay someone to do this to us over and over again

Why?

and then we go home and come back another night to do the same thing again

Why?

Well, that is my dumb question - now you said no question is dumb - "but" I think this is a dumb one. Gives you a little humor and something to think about.

Some reasons we do Modern Western Square Dancing is it is a place

- where one can enjoy a team activity where there can be winners without losers - where an evening of food + entertainment is extremely economical - where one can go without reservations most nights of the week - where strangers to the area can immediately fit in

- where those with minimum coordination ability can dance well

- where a medium level of physical effort can be combined with whatever level of mental effort desired

Have you ever walked around a square, eyes half open, just trusting the caller about what to do, feeling your body flow with the music, listening to the caller only with half an ear, forgetting everything around you but the rhythm of the music and how your body responds?

This is why I dance square.

Have you ever walked around a square, eyes wide open, not believing what the caller just said but just doing it anyway, watching your body weave strange patterns on the floor and your mind twist in a way you never expected, listening to the caller with every fiber of your being, forgetting everything around you but the simple question: "how the heck is he going to get out of this mess?"

This is why I dance square!

PS: Have you ever stood in front of a crowd, telling them a single word, and one thousand feet start to move; let the music fade away and one thousand hands start to clap because you gave the folks a good time?

Du wolltest eine dumme Frage – Ich habe da grade eine:

Warum machen wir Square Dance?

- Wir bezahlen jemand, damit er uns sagt, wohin wir gehen sollen!

- Wir beginnen an einer Stelle, laufen herum und enden wieder da, wo wir angefangen haben.

- Manche Calls haben keinen Effekt: Du beginnst den Call an einem Platz und endest danach wieder da

- und wir bezahlen jemanden dafür, daß er uns das wieder und wieder antut.

Warum?

und dann gehen wir heim und kommen am nächsten Abend wieder, um dasselbe wieder zu tun

Nun, das ist meine dumme Frage – Du hast zwar gesagt, es gibt keine "dummen" Fragen – aber ich glaube, das hier ist eine. Sie bringt Dir ein bißchen Spaß und etwas zum Nachdenken.

Ein Grund, weshalb wir Square Dance machen, ist, weil es ein Platz ist,

- wo man sich an einer Gemeinschaftsaktivität erfreuen kann, in der es Gewinner ohne Verlierer gibt

- wo ein Abend mit Essen und Unterhaltung sehr preiswert ist

- wohin man ohne Reservierung die meisten Abende der Woche gehen kann

- wo Gebietsfremde sofort hineinpassen

- wo auch Leute mit geringen Koordinationsfähigkeiten gut tanzen können

- wo ein mittlerer Grad an körperlichem Einsatz mit jedem gewünschten Grad an geistiger Herausforderung kombiniert werden kann

Bist Du jemals durch einen Square gelaufen, die Augen nur halb offen, in völligem Vertrauen auf den Caller, was zu tun ist, im Gefühl, Dein Körper fließt mit der Musik, nur mit einem halben Ohr für den Caller, alles um Dich vergessend außer dem Rhythmus der Musik und wie Dein Körper darauf reagiert?

Das ist es, warum ich Square Dance mache.

Bist Du jemals durch einen Square gelaufen, die Augen weit offen, nicht glaubend, was der Caller grade sagte, aber es trotzdem befolgend, im Bewußtsein, daß Du merkwürdige Muster auf dem Boden abläufst und daß Dein Geist auf eine Art verdreht wird, die Du nie erwartet hast, mit jeder Faser Deiner Seele auf den Caller hörend, alles um Dich vergessend außer der einfachen Frage "wie um alles in der Welt will er aus diesem Schlamassel wieder herauskommen?"

Das ist es, warum ich Square Dance mache!

PS: Hast Du jemals vor einer großen Menge gestanden, ein einziges Wort gesagt und tausend Füße beginnen sich zu bewegen; und wenn Du die Musik ausklingen läßt, beginnen tausend Hände zu klatschen, weil Du den Leuten Freude gebracht hast?
