Square Dance

The dances consist of a series of figures that a caller calls out in ever-changing combinations to different music. There is no set sequence, as there is in other folk dances. The caller freely selects the figures and can thus make the dance varied and always different. Dancers learn the individual figures in a special class. Afterward, they can dance anywhere, since the names and execution are standardized worldwide.

The music is mostly country and western, but people also dance to jazz, musical theater, and pop tunes

Square dance is a rhythmic, fluid group dance characterized by courtesy, kindness, and friendship.

The caller's instructions are given in English—there's no getting around that; a translation would be a “break in style”! Furthermore, there needs to be a standardized language so that people can dance together anywhere in the world. However, since you only need to associate the names of the figures with their execution, it's not necessary to speak or understand English perfectly.
